Show Off Your Traditional Knife Slips and Pocket Sheaths

Thanks Paul . Did you ever get used to using one ???

Harry

Harry, I actually did. It was odd at first but found a niche where the pocket sheath I settled on also has a place for my bullet pen:thumbup: I do find at times that I'll extract the knife and set down the sheath and relocate the knife only in my pocket:o Just takes a little getting used to.

I must be starting to lose it Paul . I now remember seeing you posting some with your bullet pen in it.Your slips do look pretty nice and useful too . I have almost no need at all to carry a pen or pencil anymore. When I was working , between 1975 until 2003 , I carried a Black Book and ever sharp every day . Before that , it was a Nerd Pocket .
Take care my friend .

I must admit the Pauls pictures of his knife /pen combo slip got me interested and I put together a combo slip quickly to try one out .
My idea was to carry a Pencil ( remember when everyone used Pencils ) rather than a Pen .
I thought that combination would be more appropriate and symbiotic because a knife is needed to keep the pencil sharp .
I havent really got to many pics that i can show because its not a Traditional knife that lives inside it , but Im amazed at how much I have used the Pencil and this little combo has become a constant accessory in my daily world

That is a nice looking slip ken . Looks well made to me . Do you have to kind of Pinch it together to get the knife to slip out ?? if so ,then does the pencil pocket then collapse when the pencil is not in it ??? Do you have a sewing machine or sew it by hand ?? I have never been able to sew that straight. I agree with your design philosophy too . Less is sometimes more.

The leather I made this from is quite thick and I purposely did that so the slip will retain shape and form even when the Knife and Pencil are not in it .
The leather has and will continue to mold itself to the shape of the knife and that adds to the retention .
To extract the knife I manually pull it out rather than shake it .
The stitch lines purposely only go just over half way up the slip so that the top / flaps can be spread apart .

Once you have access to the knife you just pinch the end of it and extract it

This slip was made Roughout ( the Rough side of the leather faces outwards ) for a reason .
When you make something Roughout you get an instant lined slip or sheath ( see the first pic above - the smooth less abrasive side of the leather is now in contact with the knife ) , many top custom sheathmakers line their sheaths or pouches for that reason .
Also the Rough outer is very wear resistant and has the added benefit of being more " Grippy "in the pocket , it wont slip out as easily . As you can see from the recent pics the slip is already taking on a much used look , but I have given it a very hard time in its short life .

Hand sewing is like everything , the more you do the better you get :)

Thanks for the kind words about my hobby

Ken

Ken, your work is always STELLAR. I know Jeff and I are fortunate to own your work due to your generosity. I TRULY wear it everyday:thumbup:

Looks like really nice work Ken. Great thought process too.

I think I appreciate leather as much as knives. Some came with a sheath, like the Mini Canadian - a great little knife  -, the Laguiole - she traveled around the world, including LA, Chicago, Tokyo and Singapore (sounds like a JJ Cale's song :)), now well battered - and the Ohta.

I also have some goat leather we kept from GrandPa, I've had three made of it, one went to Grandson's SAK and the others for my 15s. Both have some patina, the darkest comes from being stored between Sack-Ups - a nice surprise -.

For the third 15 I thought a GEC would fit the bill - though I'd rather had squirrels -.

The Queen swell center I received from Will for Xmas has her own pouch, while I found a period plastic for the little Pradel who lies in a pocket of my Messenger bag.

Canvas for the militaries, I had to find one for the Mauser, her place is in the R100 RT tool bag, while the French Army knife came in uniform and I choose black for the Tatoo.

Case sheath for my bulldog Issard, ex Kaweko fountain pen 's for the Ablett lambsfoot, Capdebarthes for the Bullnose and vintage handmade pen's sheath for the Szalonnázó.

I had a car (R25, destroyed) with a Sanyo radio (stolen) with removable front whom sheath is perfect to protect my Richards when hanging with the keys.

Not really a sheath, I keep my FK 2015 in my wallet. Beware the pickpockets!

I've been wondering how many of these great slips are hand sewn and how many machine? The neatness of most of the stitching had about convinced me that there was a large number of you , ahem, gentleman who had unspoken skills with the machines. Maybe some would think that "unmanly", but in my family we all were taught to at least be able to darn socks (who does that anymore), if not do some cross stitch work. I think I will have to acquire my dear mothers (her 86th was Saturday:D) now unused leather tools and get to work.
Thanks, Neal
