Show us what's in your survival kit.

Sorry but a coffee can doesn't fit in my pocket. Chris

Some kind of tin. Foil may work but it's life expectancy - like a person's - may be cut short.
Priorities are:(besides something for injuries)
Fire
Shelter
Water
Signaling
Food

A can can (not the leggy ladies) be used for:
Boiling
Digging
Banging
Holding
Cutting
Reflective
Hell, you can even attach a string to the end of another one before entering the bush and maybe someone will hear you screaming through it asking for help. :)

Long winded, I know. But I like to be ready. And the funny part is, it only weighs about 10 pounds. Worn like a lumbar pack, it practically disappears, or up front on the chest, it counter weights a pack. With a 25 pound pack on my back, this thing just sorta floats.

Here is whats on my belt while around town, and even in the woods.

Overnighter pack its self. This comes along when,... well,... I stay out longer than an after noon.:D

Mike,

that is a very well put together semi compact kit with all the basics.
Nice work.

Skam

Good lookin, Skammer. I've got to get one of those Gossman PSKs someday. Cool stuff.

These day's I have a little belt pouch (sometimes worn over the shoulder) that I like to wear, but I consider it a 'bushcraft' pouch rather than a survival kit. The difference for me is that these items are things that are readily used, or might be readily needed during certain circumstances. This pack is not something dormant that I ignore until a bad day occurs.

The contents vary fairly regularly, but a few essentials remain the same. I had an old pic, but this is a new one I snapped since things have changed a bit.
(PS- The view of the hot tootsies are yours for free, no charge this time)

Contents:
- bandanna wrapped in twine
- Opinel #7
- Garrity LED light (VERY lightweight!)
- Eclipse tin with mini FAK
- waterproofed tampon
- firesteel
- fatwood
- BIC wrapped in bright pink flag tape, with rubberband to prevent leakage
- black pouch
- sandpaper
- foil
- various cordage
- poncho
- plastic bag
- chlorine tabs
- duct tape
- whistle

The whistle and flag tape are the only items likely to be used in an emergency, the rest are commonly used.

Pitdog, where did you find that pencil sharpener? I would like to add one to my fire kit.

Here's my day pack, I try to keep it simple, and I like to have 2 of everything I think is important..compass, fire, and blade...I happened to have a Leatherman on me for this hike, I was trying it out...I think I'll leave it home, I prefer my SAK. I have some close ups of my sewing kit...I love that thing, the needles are in the center of the spool. I also carry some poker dice...they are great if your needing some entertainment, and they are light as a feather.

I also included my new Bushcraft knife from accross the pond...it cuts very well, but as of yet, I havn't had a chance to take it out for an overnighter or anything. I swapped the sheath out for a JRE..it fits so well in one that I couldn't put it back in the one that came with it.

Gunknifenut,
Where did you get that awesome sweing kit? Is it an antique?
Really cool.

My wife and I both have what we call our quake, volcanoe and dirty bomb packs in our vehicles. They have all the standard stuff but also Moldex breathing filters, gas masks with NBC filters w/replacement cartridges and bio suits. I also keep extra air cleaner filters for the car..

We have an active volcanoe 50 miles south of us that decided to start pumping ash out three years ago (again). Back when it first erupted thousands of people were stranded with clogged air cleaners and no way to breath with that fine ash in the air. So for us at least LESSON LEARNED!!!

In The Pacific Northwest we have the potential for a 9+ point quake which would destroy alot of roads we both work 30 miles from home so the PSK's are in back packs so we can at least hike home and possibly camp along the way.

Nobody else we know around us has anything like that and will most likely become refugees if any poo-poo hits the fan. Completely and totally un-prepared.

It's all about assesing the risk potential for our own geography and planning accordingly.

Here is what St Helens is doing right now. It's a not so subtle reminder that it is rapidly rebuilding right now.

I found it in some of my late fathers stuff in the basement, years ago, its traveled with me everywhere I go off the beaten path...it is cool, I've used it a few times to:D

Shaving tinder...cool idea.

That sewing kit is also cool, looks like an old container like the match safes of the same time period, is the centerpiece that goes through the spools (bobbins) a needle container as well?

Cool stuff.

"I also included my new Bushcraft knife from accross the pond..."

Gunknifenut,
Who made the Bushcraft knife? I can read by the enlargement that it says England but I can't make out the rest. I have a very similiar one I just picked up from Nordic Bushcraft which I'm really starting to enjoy - I've never had an easier time making feather sticks though I think my S1 splits better. My BC knive was made by Johan Staaf and it only took 2 days to arrive from Sweden. :)
