Showing Off My Bucks

Trax,
I pulled out my 1972 112 and used a ruler to measure the blade. It measured 1/16 beyond 2 3/4 or....2 13/16". I don't own a newer version so I can't say if they are a tad longer or not. I guess they are if you have one that measures 3". Interesting! :)

Mike and Trax,

Where are you measuring from? I'll try to help...I have several 112s a four dot, a late 80s, and an Idaho one.

I'm measuring the blade of a 1972 two-line 112, from the bolster to the end of the blade when open. The blade measures 2 13/16". I also have a two-dot 112 that measures slightly longer at 2 7/8". I believe the measurement on the 1972 112 mostly since I've owned it since new and know there hasn't been any blade loss from sharpening. The two-dot on the other hand is one I picked up and has been sharpended and may have been longer when new. If you line these two knives up next to each other the geometry is subtly different. The handle on the two-dot is about 1/16" longer than the earlier one and when the blades are closed, the ealier 112 has a good 5/16" left within the blade cavity, where the two-dot has only 3/16" left.

Mike,

From the bolster my Idaho and 1989 112s measure 3", and an upside down T 2 15/16", the four dot and a custom BG-42 blade measure 27/8".

Don't know how much the four dot has been sharpened, the BG-42 very little. Nor how much difference the 1/16" makes in the newer ones...they've not been sharpened.

I guess one could make the broad conclusion that the 112 blades have become marginally longer over the years. It could have to do with a re-design of the blade geometry. When that was done would have to be answered by someone with more knowledge, but I think that is the most probable explanation. It really doesn't make that much difference and Trax shouldn't have any problem with his project as long as he uses blades from the same generation.

There are no layers with this micarta, but simply the visible "cloth" impression within the black micarta substance...When I get chance, I'll try to take a close-up of the scales and post it.

Thanks, Mike! I'll be looking for it! ;)

I was looking through my stock of knife scale/M1911 grip material, and I found two each pieces of black Micarta in canvas and linen, plus a bigger chunk of paper black Micarta I'd ordered from Texas Knife Supply and forgotten about (a mind is a terrible thing to waste)...

I can clearly see the canvas weaving, and now I'm torn between re-scaling a 110 in linen or canvas... ;) :)

One of the things I've always wanted to see is a 110 to match my original 112, with the canvas black micarta scales. It would have to be on a similar generation 110 though!

A 2-pin slabside 110 w/long chamfered blade! Sounds good! I bet Leroy can handle that! (Hopefully!) :D
