SHTF knife

Based on the OP scenario it seems like spending the extra $100-200 on more ammo would be a better option, then just grab a shovel or something if it gets past that.

I really really like my Tops wild pig hunter I've used it for shelter building processing firewood a little food prep it's a great great knife for the money..... oh yeah I've killed a few Zombies with it too!

I would want either my khukuri or Cold Steel Trailmaster. Probably the Trailmaster....then wish I'd chosen the kuk. The SAK Champion would be in my pocket.

Mine is a JK Handmade Knives 'The Tool' and a Tops Hawke's Hellion (Yeah, I figure the few extra ounces makes it worth carrying TWO blades for when the scenario calls for it. After all, a large blade is only good for so much and that finesse is just as important as being 'brute' about things. ESPECIALLY when SHTF

Blackjack 1-7 would be my choice. The Kabar Becker BK-9 would be a good choice. The Cold Steel Trailmaster would also be a good choice as mentioned above.

Koster Bushmaster . little over.200 3V, 5 inches, micarta or wood grips. V grind'

Ontario Spec plus 5160 . one of several that all fit the bill.

Too many for me to choose

Busse ASHBM or any other battle mistress style blade. Expensive, but they hold value well. Tough as it gets.

My first pick in your price range would be the scrapyard sycko 1111 it is 220 plus you will have to buy a sheath. Second choice nails your budget dead on, the buck hoodlum, third choice is the entrek bison just a touch over your price range at 220. And if money were no concern I would scratch all those and get the Busse of your choice like an anniversary flying mojo

The junglas could be a possibility... Anyone have experience with that?

I have and love the Junglas. I use it more for processing wood when camping but I am sure it could flex into this SHTF scenario. Oh, and it has a fantastic kydex sheath.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions everyone, it's obvious I have a lot more research to do... I've been noticing that a lot of these are flat or saber grinds, what are the benefits of each in a self defense/some survival situation?

Also... 1095 cro van in the BK9, INFI in the BUSSE... I haven't heard much about the cro van, but I've heard nothing bad about the INFI, but it obviously comes at a higher cost, what's your reccomendations as far as steel goes? Or would a knife with a D2 tool steel, or other tool steel, be great too? I do realize most if not all these blades need regular maintenance, as all knives should have anyway

Tdkfm... Yes, a hundred more rounds of ammo would be a good use of the money for thus situation too, but... You can only carry so much, its much easier to carry one 1 1/2 lb knife than it is to carry multiple pounds of ammo, and the knife will take up less room

Craytab, those are nice looking blades! Would you mind listing what they are? I know the Junglas and the Paramilitary 2, looks like an ESEE 6, but am not sure about the rest.

+1 on the CS bowie. I wonder how much trouble it would be to sawback the spine from the handle to the swedge?
