Silver Needle's GSO 5's

I had a GSO-5 and sold it in favor of a 5.1 because I felt it was heavy for the size. Couldn't resist ordering another at the marked down 2nds price yesterday, though. I'm thinking I'll mill a deep clip point and lightening holes in the handle tang.

Very nice.
Try slicing a 1" phonebook, kinda like you would a sheet of paper. Like butter, of course it needs to be held firmly
Now that would be something!

For some I can see it being too heavy. It was more of a beast in my hand than I expected from pictures and specs. For my uses it is just what I need. I do appreciate the beef!

Brummie, I cannot wait to see your 5 with a clip point. Seriously, that sounds like it will be awesome.

It's not that I mind the weight as long as the weight has a purpose. It just seemed like it would be too compact to make good use of the weight. That's why I went for the 5.1 - that extra inch should make a lot of difference in chopping / hacking for very little additional weight. Plus, I can afford to be anal about minor details because I have too many knives already, so I already have alternatives in that size range.

When I get around to the modifications, I'll post up some pictures (unless I make a complete pig's ear of it).

I think I'll love a 6 eventually for the same reasons you like the 5.1 better.

I take it you're not a fan of the bk2 or ESEE 5 :p

The extra inch is definitely nice on the 6 for stuff like batoning but I really don't see any difference in performance between the two. I'm pretty positive I'll own another 5 someday when I can afford multiple knives.

Hey SN, next time you need to get through a small tree with a knife that isn't made for chopping, try using a baton and watch how much better your results get instead of actually chopping.

Oh you know it. I did a surprising amount of damage with just my 3.5 doing that.

I've wanted to experience what true chopping was like with the dimensions and weight of the 5 for a long time. I also wanted to try Aaron's pinky lanyard. I guess I just felt like working harder not smarter :p

In a practical and energy efficiency situation, cross batoning (that is what it's called, right?) is the way to go. I think that is the best way to get a small or medium knifw to work beyond its weight class. Good tip, friend.

Glad you know about it. I actually HATE chopping with knives that aren't meant for that. I've used machetes and axes for so long that the inefficiency that comes with knife chopping bothers the hell out of me

But the key here is having fun. Of course a hatchet is more efficient , but not as near as entertaining as batoning. Same with a fire steel, which is way more fun than a match. I understand your logic

By all means don't think I'm saying I hate when other people do it. I hate doing it myself. Hell, chop away with a Mora if you choose brother!

You guys understand me! I did just want to play with my 5. I do have a hatchet and 9 inch blade for real work. Chopping with a mora? I did try some feeble attempts with my 3.5, just to see what would happen :)

Guys, coming from Sweden I've got to step in and say that there are some bigger Moras and even axes too...

Like the 6.75" pathfinder for example :)

Whoa, Mora bowie!!!!! I had seen reviews on their hatchet, but I had never seen this before. I really want to try a 511 before I leave this plane of existence.

I like that red.

Maybe I like it too much...don't have any red in my S! collection.

:D

I thought you had every color on the S! Catalog. :D

It sure seems like I don't have any two of the same...seeing these guys with matching knives makes me a bit jealous.

I did just order handle slabs for the 5 and the 10 to match them though. :D
