Great pictures Scott, your fit and finish is phenomenal.

I've got a decent Nikon camera that I took the pics above with, I just need to figure out how to use it! I'd like to get a macro lens for it. My Droid phone is hit or miss with pics.
 
I think lighting is the key, or at least it was for me. The only time I can really get good pics is in early morning when the sun is coming up or later on in the evening right before the sun goes down, overcast days don't work for me I think you need two sources of light the sky directly above and the sun at a low angle to get good photos. A light box can duplicate the light situation that's why they work well, Coop has a thread on it here which show us how to build one for a bout $75.00, I might do that this winter. Also one thing that works good for me is large natural finish ceramic floor tiles from Hobo for $2.00 or $3.00 a piece, I think they work well because they're non reflective.
 
I have a Phillip Patton damascus hunter. The damascus is insanely cool. I cannot in any way take a picture of it that does it justice. I let 338375 take it hunting. He tried too. It might be a vampire knife. It simply does not photograph.
 
Ha, glad you like it. I'll get some pics of the wood I'm thinking of using on the next ones.

I remember seeing a pic of that hunter, his stuff is awesome. I think we have similar taste.
 
Thanks for the plug, Scott. Like you, I use natural lighting; morning mostly and some evenings I bought an inexpensive light tent that does diffuse some light, but also applies (tent ceiling) reflections to anything shiny one the knife; so, be aware.

John, the knife looks freakin' great. As to the thumpling and key questions: that was a lot of work; do you want to put in that much effort on each knife made? Personally, I'd streamline the process if possible.

Names of birds, planes, flowers, are all good. More later, I'm tired. Damn nice work!
 
The thumpling doesn't take much time, the key is the big question. This first one was time consuming. I could streamline it by making a jig for the scale slots and that would cut down on a lot of time. But the fact of the matter is, slotting the tang & scales, making the key, fitting everything and peening was well over 7 hours of work, compared to about 30 minutes to set up and peen a pin.

It'sts tough for me to figure out a good balance, it all depends on if you guys think it's a nice feature, or just a novelty.

1. Pursue the key/shield/thingamabob or is it a waste of time? Leave it as an option.

That knife is an absolute beauty. You are right though, I couldn't pull it off... My photo skills suck at best though, and I'm an idiot, so I didn't have a lot to work with :D

It was starting to piss me off because I really wanted people to see the true knife. I actually had it all planned out though. I figured once I got a deer or elk, I would get it nice
and bloody, and that might make it easier, but not only couldn't I get a good picture, I didn't get a deer or elk either :( After typing that, I realized something. I suck... :D

I really like that you put a bar shield into the scales on that knife. The first thing I thought of was, slip joint... There were a lot of variations of
shields used on the old Traditional knives, and I never understood why so few put them on sheath knives :confused:

I've always liked shields on slipjoints, but an inlayed shield is cosmetic, I thought it might be interesting to make a functional one that worked as a pin. I'd like to try maybe bronze or copper, but I think those would only look right in the right kind of wood.
 
Seems like I disappear when I'm working on a leather project, probably to spare you guys from my temper tantrums, a lot of kicking and screaming goes on. But we're getting there.
 
It's a tip down, I've got one of those wrong handed ones coming up. Usually I make two, the first one starts with, "You dummy, this us supposed to be a lefty"! Followed by many four letter words.
 
I've been meaning to ask this but keep forgetting, does anyone know of any fixed blades with shields, inlayed or otherwise? I remember seeing one from GEC with an acorn, but I don't know about any others. I'm gonna ask the traditional forum, unless they throw me off the porch:eek:
