Simple Simon met a Pieman

Thanks Shel, I'm happy with the way this turned out.

Just finished wallowing out the tangs and thumpling the rest of the batch, I'll be grinding bevels tomorrow.

John,
Love the whole package! And thanks for your formula and process for the leather. I've mixed up a little batch before with ferric chloride, but without a Radio Shack around the corner anymore, and the success you have with vinegar, I'll give that a go for sure!

Love these WIPs John! Either black or brown for the leather works, but I agree with Mack, kinda depends on the wood used for the handle. If it were me (;)), I'd leave that up to the maker. :D

Can't wait!!! :D

Theyd be a lot better wip's if I could remember to take pictures!

I'm gonna experiment with some brown and vinegaroon, looks great in my head, but that doesnt say much!

Christmas tree is up, kids are napping, got some grinding time. Trying out some new belts (Cubitron 984F's and 947A's). Thats nerd mangler speak for, "I'm a nerd mangler".:p

I'm just full of...

...great ideas.

I see a poll in that post. ;)

Great lookin' piece John, one of these days I'll be able to get me one of your knives before everyone else sees what you're doin' and then I'll never get one. That would be a knice companion for a Traditional Trapper.

I like, I like. :)

Thanks Ted, unless there's a Betty Ford Clinic for knifemangling, I'll be around. Just don't tell them about our hideout:p

As far as these new (to me) Cubitron belts go....where have you been all my life?

Trees trimmed. Yeah, it's a little early.

Corsairs are ground and on the flight deck.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things.

Those look great Johnny, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Happy Thanksgiving, gentlemen. Yeah, the rest of you, too.

Made a jig for a guide to file out the scales. Used a piece of 1/4" 1095, slotted a .125"x.375" hole in it, water quenched it and put a light temper on it. Hoping I can use it to drill straight holes and file the rest out a lot easier.

On a sidenote, I've tried to design a Wharncliffe/Sheepsfoot fixed blade for years. For some reason, they are hard to get right for me, they always look dumpy or awkard. I traced out the handle on the corsair, kept the bit of thumb ramp, flipped the blade upside down, and gave it just a bit of a zulu rise on the edge so its not completely straight to the tip. Think I'm gonna try a few in the next run of stuff. I'll get a sketch up when it's less of a scribble.

I'm hoping that I can tack the jig on a cut scale, drill a few holes with the jig as a guide, clamp it in a vise and and file the rest out. The slot is the same size as the key material, finish up with a quick fit without the jig and be good to go. It was either this jig made of 50 cents worth of steel, or a couple of thousand dollar mill, I know, what a cheap bastard:D

Looking forward to seeing it.

Crossing my fingers it works well. If we do another batch of these sometime, I think I'll drill holes for the pins in the jig and use them to mark out the blanks. Of course I thought about that after it was hardened.... right after:rolleyes:. I can always anneal, drill and re harden, but I'll mess with that after this batch.

I know you guys would rather see finished knives than jigs, bit it's all part of the process.

Maybe a nice swedge, and some white liners, thumpled. Miicarta maybe with some wood up front or in the middle. Ok, stop brain, stop, sorry, it gets wacky up there:eek:

White liners or multi layer liners would look really good, as would a micarta,G10, or carbon fiber bolsters, food for thought.

Great idea on the jig! Work smart, not hard!

If you use two different handle materials, maybe slant the joint to match the Wharncliffe or sheep? Just a thunk!
