season of leaks

my bathroom and shower...

my car...

looks like the stealership is going to rebuild the engine in my car, my cost: $20, their cost... it's the second time. $10k+. lol. a new engine. nice!

why? was leaking oil. 3.5 years old. bad rings. who knew?

WW, I still use a file to refine my plunges a little and keep them even sometimes. You can also clamp a straight piece of stock about where you want your plunge to be. Measure twice, grind once.

When you drill holes, make sure you countersink them before sending them off to Peters. What steel you using, btw? Is that 52100?

This is O1 tool steel. I will probably use 52100 next time i order steel though. I have had no issues with O1 though really.

I will for sure countersink them first!! Im in no hurry to send it off for heat treat though. Id rather buy more steel than pay for heat treat right now LMAO.

Thanks for the tips man. I like the idea of clamping stock down so you cant go past it.

Do you use a round file for the plunges??

As for *ahem* "in-progress design modifications".... let's just say I've made a lot of 1/8" thick by 6" long blades out of 1/4" thick by 10" long barstock. It happens... :o :D

LMAO!!!

I can totally see doing this a lot myself :D Earlier i was thinking next time i order steel ill get thicker stock... Starting with 1/8" doesnt leave you with much steel after you grind it down too much!!

My little knife looks like a thin kitchen knife on the blade portion now.... But hey i guess it could make a great slicer if i manage to put a decent final edge on it after heat treat.

It's an online shop; one of the by-invite-only places I frequent. Give me a holler with your preferred online shopping email if you want an invite and we'll split store credit after your first purchase. Ditto if you want a Leftlane invite. Both have regular sales on gear that you might like.

Thank you sir, I'll keep that in mind.

Ten G's to rebuild a stinking engine?!? Are the rings made out of gold?

WAKE up PEOPLE.

I've been awake all night. But I'm literally staring at a hole in a fence so it was a challenge.

In addition to the 'leave this page' prompt I've noticed an issue with the quote feature. If I quote or multi quote a post or posts many times those quotes will appear in later posts.

Yeah, javascript sux.

So I learned the other day that the mussels we collected at this site last year were short of the world record by only 1cm. We're doing Argus-only survey dives right now looking for likely spots to come back sampling with Herc. Hopefully we can beat that record too. :D

What paint scheme are you thinking of?

Knocking the rust off and just clear-coating it might be pretty cool.... natural patina, rat-rod style...

Todd, can you build another one of those, but scale it up to fit a 6'3" 250# grown man? That would be awesome... talk about JT pimpin' ... :D

Earlier i was thinking next time i order steel ill get thicker stock... Starting with 1/8" doesnt leave you with much steel after you grind it down too much!!

Naw, don't do that. In all seriousness, I strongly recommend newer makers to work with stock no thicker than 1/8" until they get a few under their belt. There's a much higher chance of getting down to something that cuts well before you get frustrated. And if you grind it too thin, just tell people "I meant to do that; look here, it cuts better the thinner it gets." ;)

As for grind styles... it just depends on whom you ask. I find FFG the easiest, but that's probably just because that's what I've always preferred, so that's what I have the most practice on.

season of leaks...

I hate plumbing issues with a passion normally reserved for crimes against humanity. Currently I have a leaky kitchen sink and a water-heater that seems to have a burnt-out element or maybe a blown-out thermostat (thank goodness, the tank itself isn't leaking though; that gets expensive)... so guess what's on my "honey-do" list this weekend? The good news is, they're both easy to get at*, not too costly to fix, and I've done similar repairs before with success.

*Last year Angie and I had to rebuild her parents' water heater... which is in a crawl-space under their house, which is about 3 foot "tall" and has no floor, just red clay mud and six inches of fetid water... not fun. Ours is up on blocks on a dry concrete floor in a fully-lit room I can comfortably stand up straight in... so that will be a lot easier to deal with. :)

Minimum wage in PA is 7.25 last i heard. Times that by the hour and a half it took me to read that and it equals around 10 bucks. Ill PM you my address for payment ZZ :D

Funny story though !!

At least you have one to fix. :D The b-tards stole mine, along with the stove, cast iron bath tub and sink, and MY .....ING KITCHEN SINK!!!!!! :grumpy:

Todd, if you're going to start building custom rat-rod trikes for full grown dumbasses, I would like to put my name on the waiting list.

...Custom Rat-Rod Trikes for Full-Grown Dumbasses...

That, my friend, is the funniest, best, most finely-crafted marketing slogan I've heard in a very long time. Holy smokes, how cool would that look on a t-shirt? :)

Just a flat. I refine the plunges til they're even, and then the grinder can finish it off more easily. I honestly would buy more steel; the more you send in per batch, the lower the cost per blade by a long shot, especially when you factor in shipping.

Why do days have to be so long when waiting to do something???!!!!!!! Leaving at 1700 to go camping (pre-gathering leg stretching) and the minutes feel like hours!! GOD(!!!!)IT!

Dibs on both "Rat-Rod Trikes" and "Full-Grown Dumbasses" for a band name. I'm also putting together a band called Whiskey Dinner because one of my friends said they had whiskey for dinner last night on facebook.

Sounds like a grand-slam to me. Y'all need a rippin' lead guitar player with a good ear/voice for vocal harmonies? I have plenty axes and I will work for bourbon and glory.
