Skills Gathering, November 20 & 21st

Since I really need to learn how to make a fire with firesteel and all natural tinder, I`ve decided there will be a little contest to see who can start a fire, using this method, the quickest! I can start one with dryer lint, Bic :D, and using my forge and jeans,, but have no experience using natural materials.

So here are the rules!

1) you can use only materials found where we are at.
2) You must use a firesteel.
3) No accelerants, like petroleum jelly.

The one who can do it the quickest (not counting finding the tinder) wins a prize (and it`s a pretty good one :D) Now I`ve got to find a watch, I have not worn one since I left my real job!

Better start practicing!

Hi Stomper -

Cool! That is a neat idea.

Now my wife will be wondering why I am trying to start fires so much....

That sounds like a fun contest! Like the saying goes, the more you need a fire the harder it is to start one. A little pressure will have us all sparking away. One ?, is it the first one to produce a flame or be maybe getting some small stuff burning?

Would it be OK to show up at the last minute if I can swing it?

It`s to actually get a small fire going.

The trip is looking VERY promising at this point. :)

Hi Jeff -

That would be awesome - I know it is a long trip for you.

I hope you can swing it!

Hey JDS1, curious if you had a skill in mind to demo for us. I am doing fishing, Frontiertom is doing cooking and mqqn is doing his bannock (pantsfires for Stomper? :) ).

Hi outdoorsfan -

Don't forget the sippy cup filling lol.....J/k.

I will try to have my technique for figure 4 deadfalls done so that I can show that to the group as well.

Well hi guys, I am back from my trip to Teddy's! Had a great time as usual! Got to produce a small knife blade out of a knife that I bought at Goodwill, and cut the tip off of. Well, now the tip is another little knife! I am still working on it but, I might have it ready for the outing this month, not sure yet!

In answer to outdoorsman, yes I was going to try and do the cooking portion of the over night trip we were trying to plan but, seeing as we are just going to go out for the day, I figured with hotdogs everyone would want to cook their own. That is part of the fun! I am planning to start everyone out on a spoon I think. I plan to bring my carving knives with me! Everyone that wants to do a spoon, bring whatever piece of wood that you would like to make it out of and we will work on them while we are out, or at least get them started! I found a nice piece of cedar in Teddy's burn box down at his house while I was there! I also found a nice batton in the box! I kept looking at the two logs for two or three days. I finally decided to take the piece of cedar out and split it into the pieces that I wanted for spoons while they were at church. I used my new RAT-7, and what a nice job it did at spliting that log too! When I got the log split, it turned out to have the nicest purple heart inside of it. Teddy was even impressed!

I guess that is it for now. Later!
