Skills Gathering, November 20 & 21st

I`ve got a piece of osage set aside for my spoon. I`m getting more excited the closer this gets! I`ve been working 12 hour days so I can be ahead of schedule. I heat treated 10 blades this morning, 7 for orders, and 3 to sell. I do take a 10 minute break every hour to check my emails and here. The good news is that on the 21st, I ll be starting December orders. I want everyone to get their Christmas knives on time!

Sorry about the mix up frontiertom! I must have had ranch beans on the brain! :)

Hey no problem! I hadn't really said anything about it because of the way things had gotten changed around. I'm sure there will be more than enough to do! Seems like the more I think about it, the more I am planning to bring with me. It's almost like going on a trip. I think I am going to bring my little shopping cart with me so I don't have to carry all of the stuff out there on my back! I am really looking forward to the "Gathering"! I was just looking at the calendar this afternoon, and that day is coming up mighty fast!

Catch you later!

I am really getting excited as well! Same for me, the list keeps growing but I need to keep myself in check or I will end up with enough gear for a week in the woods! I can't wait, only a little over a week now. I am really looking forward to seeing all you guys again!

This one is coming along for jds1. EDC Kephart in yellow G10.

Hi Stomper -

She's a beauty! Jeff sure knows how to pick 'em.

I have not done anything with #1 except admire it and show it to friends - but I really like that little blade.

I notice that we are getting a soaker here in Illinois today - might make fire starting a little more difficult next weekend.....

By the way - about how far of a hike from our vehicles will the "spot of debauchery" be?

best regards -

Good pick jds1, I like that yellow G10.

I believe John mentioned that our little playground is about 1/4 mile from our cars mqqn. Its within easy cooler toting distance! ;)

I would be carefull with coolers. Like any park, alchohol is by permit only, so keep it low key. Besides, you guys know I don`t drink. :D

Some of the knives I`m bringing, unless they sell first.

Looks like this will be fun. I'm jealous, since I can't make it. When this idea was first thrown out there I was going to recommend Mammoth Cave NP, since I could make that one. Didn't figure it would get picked though. Maybe I can make one sometime next year if it happens again.

Please post lots of photos. I want to see the fishing kits. I'd like to make one for myself, and am curious as to what all to put in it. Do spoons or small spinners(like rooster tails) work well when fished by hand without a reel? Or just stick to hooks with natural bait and jigs?

John, whats the orange handled fire kit? Looks like a shorter version of the pack knife.

That`s basically what it is, I call it a Modified LDK. What I would really like to do in the future, is have each member of our "Gathering Group" host a gathering in the location of their choice. I think we have a great group of guys, we all get along well, despite our age differences!

Weatherman is predicting mid 50`s and sunny for Saturday!

Hi Stomper -

Sweeeet! Hopefully it is nice and dry all week; think natural tinder ;)

best regards

If you'd like, I can give John an extra and have him send it with your next order or give me your email and I can send you what I cooked up as a take home for the gathering. I am going to go over some primitive/ improvised hooks and lines along with some "survival" fishing techniques (trotlines, hobo fishing, etc.). In general, food is lower on the list in a "lost in the woods" scenario so I would keep the gear to a minimum as I see fishing as more of a way to pass time and keep a positive mindset. I willl also post some pics of a slightly larger kit that I have. I try to keep things small and stay away from plastics as they tend to degrade over time, small spoons are ok, as are maribou jigs, jig heads, hooks etc. Not to let the "cat out of the bag" but one of my favorite things for a small kit is ice fishing jigs. They work great for panfish and can catch larger fish like bass as well as offering an easy way to hook small grubs and other found baits. Another nice thing to have is a length of braided dacron ice fishing line. It is much easier on the hands as it will not cut you as easily as mono can but you would still want a small length of mono or fluro as a leader.

That would work well, I`m shipping an order to kyturkey in early December.

Just to get you guys practicing your fire techniques, I thought I would post a pic of the prize. It`s the Sparkler Knife in the bottom of this pic.
