Skookum Bushtool

I guess it's nice to have them all. However we have such great makers here plus the top production knives like the F-1 and dozens of Bark Rivers.

Good point. Something I've wanted to ask is what (if anything) makes the SBT better than, say, a Koster or Brian Andrews bushcrafter?

Why O1 Tony?

Cool that you got to compare the Skookums. Dont you have a Terrasaur too? Hows it compare to the SBT? I have one on order w/ brian.

Could it be that im developing a Scandi bug?:o

I like the ease of sharpening 01, and for what ever reason I am more comfortable with it. I seam to roll and chip my Brian Andrews made knife in 01 alot less than any other scandi knife in different steels.

I don't have the Terrasaur as I have two straight back scandi knives already.
I think I am coming up really soon on Brian's list. My next knife will be cross between his Bushcraft and mine:thumbup:

Can't go wrong with O1 for ease in sharpening and it will throw good spark from a firesteel. A2 will hold an edge a little longer and not as spark good on a firesteel. CPM3V if your going to abuse/neglect it.

All the steels will work with a firesteel, but O1 will be better with flint. Stainless will not work with flint

IMO nothing makes it better, it just different, something more that one must have.:D

I am sure not picking on that particular knife but if several people have the cuda579/x7 and swear buy it then to be cool, you gotta have it too,:D Thus things come and go. Human nature.

I will quit now, I am snowed in for Xmas and got a bit ornery. My wife and I along with my son and his wife are snowed in at their house while the daughter and other son are snowed in across town. No travel anywhere in this area. Merry Xmas,

I agree with udtjim. The Skookum is kinda like the woodlore in the UK. People out in the UK all want the woodlore because of Ray Mears, its the ideal version of thier bushcraft knife.. Well, the Skookum is connected to Mors and is the US version of THE bushcraft knife. I dont think it will out peform either of my Andrews knives though.

Does anyone have a picture of the back of the sheath, these look like a handy size knife.

Hey ornery Jim - consider yourself lucky. I'm supposed to be at my daughter's for a huge Christmas dinner (lots of people) instead I'm home sick with the flu. See you're not so bad off after all and on top of that you've got snow - we have rain!!!!

Oh, and Merry Christmas! :D

BTW, considering where you live, doesn't anybody have snowshoes?

It is time for me to think more about what I need, I will never have all I want. It is a endless quest and it's been fun but I am a much poorer man for my obsessions. I have totes full of knives that will never see the light of the outdoors,:o:o
amen!. this might sound stupid but i have been contemplating of only allowing myself one knife purchase for 2010. i like many here have a ton of knives that rarely get used anymore. i have a few knives i find perfect for me and don't stray from them anymore. i don't consider myself a collector but i keep accumulating more knives. it is hard being a knife knut.:D

I wont say that it is Better, but it is for me. I dont like the Koster, it was a poor fit to my hand, (I know that the slabs have been thickened in later runs) and the choil area wasnt for me.
The B-Andrews was a really fun knife, and would perform very well, but I didnt fall in love with the handle, it worked very well, but the SBT's handle just fits me better.
Overall, at this level of knives...we are just splitting hairs IMO. Its really a matter of getting them, and trying them, and deciding what is best for you.

i got a ted kidd and love it.

Nice Knife Rio...

I agree with Gene....Splitting hairs....

I dont want one of these cause everyone else has one or wants one, or praises it due to name or reputation....I want one of these because I am wanting to try out a couple good Scandis that I actually like the profile and apperance of. I have tried moras and kosters but while I liked the grind, I just wasnt pleased with apperance. Too shank like for my tastes...However, I do like the grind. My Boat tail from BHK, is really pleasing to use, and works wood quite well.

J, you need to kepp me up to speed on that Boat Tail from BHK's. I was eyeing that thing, but would have to sell something to get it. That little guy is in my future for sure. I am on a scandi kick at the moment though, they just do so well will wood.

At one point, I had a ton of knives, but I spent more time and energy while buying, selling, or trading them that I didnt get to use and enjoy them. Thats why I am bringing myself down to 5-8 knives that will be great users, very comfortable for long use, and pleasing to the eye. Thats just my take though, take it for what you will.

The things I like about the Skookum:

Easy to sharpen.
I have a lot of blades in 01 and the Skookum 01 seems to be in the top of my 01's as far as holding and edge.

Blade thin. Mine is 1/8 so that makes it a better slicer than my Gen 1 Koster or Ray Mears style.

Handle is nice size for me.

Slight curve to cutting edge.

Butt cap is nice for cracking nuts and other things.

Downsides would be corrosion because it's 01.

Micarta and butt cap make it heavy.

I don't like the sheath. Around the neck it allows sweat to corrode the blade and the blade pops in and out of the sheath. This makes it way more secure but means you have to have 2 hands to get it out of the sheath. (Or I do)

Not as compact as a Koster or Charlie May.

I think it's one of the better ones out there. I love my Gen 1 koster that I shaped the handle myself. To me it's not the Holy Grail or anything but I've used mine in the wilderness a LOT. I don't think it's as pretty as some others but the performance is great.

I think Brian Andrews also makes a great knife. I like the Skookum a bit better than his bushcraft because the Skookum is slightly more compact but if you had a larger hand you'd like the Brian Andrews better. Also on the 2 knives of Brians I have used the 01 and D2 both were equal to my top D2 and 01 blades for edge toughness.
