Skookum Bushtool

I wish you all would stop posting pics of the Spyderco. That handle looks so great it keeps making me want one....I....must....resist........:)

All the steels will work with a firesteel, but O1 will be better with flint. Stainless will not work with flint

I do understand that the flint referred to is not a firesteel. Still, after having many O1 and A2 blades, all my 01's always shed a nice even shower of spark and the A2's not as robust. All on blades with no jimping or notches on the spine but rather just a flat sharp spine. A year ago I had both an O1 and A2 Skookum's at once. Both very sharp spines and same effect, O1 over A2. I've yet to hear an explanation as to why this is but, as they say, it is what it is. I go with what works better regardless of what tech info tells me should be facts.
Could it be a higher carbon content is O1? On a side not, my old F1 and IDUN shed a shower of sparks like my O1 blades.

Here are a couple pics of my red linen A2 Skookum. I am using a dangle I bought from TF here on the forum.

For what it's worth, my Skookum is in A2, and I've had a more-than-average amount of edge rolling. It's sharpened out, but still more than any of my other scandis. I can only attribute this to the steel so far. Hence, I will only use O1 on future scandis (all but my moras are O1).

Hi Porcupine. I would doubt that it has to do with carbon content, as a sharp piece of glass will cast sparks just as well as my knives. Rather, it has to do with how sharp, or aggressive the cutting edge is.

That is an interesting observation. A2 has such a great reputation, generally. Do you have any other information or observations regarding this edge rolling?

I ask, because I ordered 3V, but I don't know if I will stay with that, I wonder if it is too much for field sharpening. So, I was going to fall back to A2, but now you mention this...

Is O1 the best steel, in this knife?

Now that I think about it, I don't think I have heard much about steel performance in this very specific application...

And the question might be, where is Rod getting his steel heat-treated?

Any other Skookum owners with observations about steel in their Skookum?

Marion

^^^Yeah, Id like to know the same. I ordered mine with A2 b/c its my favorite, but is O1 better in the SBT?? I have pllleeeennnnntttttyyy of time to change my steel....

Mine is in 01 and I think it has some of the better tempering of any 01 I have.

I think the 3v is pretty great but it is not immune to damage either. For me the 01 is always easier to bring to a perfect edge. IMO it actually maintains a shaving sharpness LONGER than 3v. HOWEVER the 3v will maintain a really SHARP edge longer than the 01 if that makes any sense.

Bring a diamond plate, and some sandpaper and no problem sharpening 3v

I made a belt adapter for mine.

Mine is in A2 with grey canvas micarta scales and the steel butt plate.

The Skookum Bush Tool, not just for the Boreal Forest anymore.

Do you happen to have a rear shot of that Skookum sheath you modded?

It's not elaborate. I cut the belt loops to fit the belt I use most often.

I shot this one while I was still working on it, pre-trim, pre-beeswax, paracord tie. Once you wax the leather ties the whole thing gets rock solid.

This mod doesn't alter the original sheath in any way. Mac
