Skookum Bushtool

Thanks for chiming in HD.

Got my order confirmation...20 month wait. :(

Gonna be awhile, but Ill look forward to it...

You won't be dissapointed Jake, having seen your taste in handles elsewhere. The Skookum is pretty easy to like because the curves on the handle are quite gentle and 'allowing'. The thin blade, as HD noted, slices like a dream. The constant curve of the edge don't hurt either.

The good news is even if you end up hating it, you can sell it with absolutely no trouble.

Maybe we can have Spooky measure both handles.

I can give the specifics on the BGA, but the skookum is actually off visiting a friend right now! I think it will be back later this week as a last resort. The BGA measurements...

Handle length: 4 5/8"
Thickness at swell: 1"
OAL: ~9"
Blade width: ~1" at widest point
The distance from widest part of swell to the start of the cutting edge is 2".

Hope that helps!

My skookum was straight all the way to the end, and I wanted something that was more of "enzo" meets a skookum with a tip 1/4 from the center line, and that is what you get with the brian andrews Terrasaur. It is slightly wider with more "meat" than the skookum, but still retains some of the aspects of the Skookum that I love. Both knives fit the hand well and do not twist when whittling. I also wanted to look down from the top without thinking that I was looking at a cutco. The straight scandi edge works wood easy, and the long straight edge is a joy to use for removing bark. The beginning of the edge comes alot closer to the hand, near the ricasso, on the terrasaur and is handy like a mora, for fine carving. I like the cap on the Skookum for pounding in tent stakes and trap triggers myself. My skookum was/is one of my most used knives in my bucket, now only rivaled by the Terrasaur.

Can someone explain the "shearing hole" purpose? For shearing what?

If you have Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski look at the pic on page 121. Basically you run something through the hole (like a nail which is in a board) and use that as a lever....sort of like making the knife into a form of heavy duty paper cutter.

Mors describes it as "A knife can provide the cutting edge for a form of shear to cut short pieces of sticks for a variety of applications or for trimming wands and spokes used in basketry."

I was told the same for wait time about 20 months. I placed my order for a 3V model a couple of months ago. However I got lucky a grabbed a A2 model with buttcap on the exchange a few weeks back.

I have only used it a little around the house so far, but find it very comfortable. To compare it to a Koster is like apples to oranges. Both are great in their own way. For me the new gen 3 Koster just is not that comfortable, & the handle is too large for me. The SBT is perfect size for me.

I love my Gen 1 koster except the thick blade. However I shaped the handle myself so it's a good deal thicker than stock:

I'm not sure what Generation but this Koster in 01 is nice too. The blade is thinner like the skookum but it has a longer handle so it's not as compact as the Gen 1, but with the wood handle and 1/8" steel it's a lot lighter.

I have to say, I really love this images of yours.

They speak volumes, and really explain so much.

I had heard that the Gen 1 Koster Bushcraft handle was a bit short, but it was one of your images that made that clear.

Well done.

Not too short for me but I've heard a lot of folks say that.

Yeah one of my biggest bitches about knife pics is that there's no way to determine scale.

I've many times bought a knife and it wound up being way bigger or smaller than I thought it would be, because there was no pic to give you any idea.

Hands vary of course but at least an "in hand" pic can give you SOME idea of scale. For me I always try to throw in a common knife or two that someone might have so they can get an idea of the actual size.

Well said, I could not have explained it better.

Your thoughts and observations on this subject are exactly like my own.

Wow, thanks HD....Those pics speak volumes.

Nice job on that Koster, I wish they all came that way.
