SKS Opinions

I agree mongrel....

Im glad to hear so many positives about the SKS. Ive heard them declared "the ultimate survivalist rifle" by some, but I tend to draw conclusions based on my own experiance, and the overall opinions of others. I think it is a great rifle due to the abundance of them, price, abundance of ammo(for now), and availability of parts. They are dead reliable too, and may not be a tack driver, but I dont think a combat rifle needs to be. Just enough to hit center mass at 25-50 yards is good enough. I can do that with this. If I wanted a tack driver Id get a Savage .308, or any other nice bolt action.

I think this is a longgun that will fit any budget, and perform great!

Damn fine guns good SKS's are! I say good cuz some arent that great IMO. I have had a norinco for about half a lifetime and that thing is a great gun. Cheap to buy (paid $110 in about 90 something for mine) and cheap ammo. I would consider it a SHTF candidate. If you could have 3 guns the SKS, a good 22, and a good shotty would just about cover all your bases.

Ive seen the metal ventelated upper handguards on em, look like the ones on an M14 or Ruger mini14. Anyone know where to get one of these?

I read somewhere (Survivor's SKS Boards??/The AK Forum??/Shotgun News??) where a guy did a mod with a new upper handguard and his conclusion was that it was a royal PITA to do. If my memory serves correctly it was something about a pin (either removing it to get the wood off or installing a new one once the new furniture was in place on the gas tube). He recommended buying one of the complete upper handguards from TAPCO with the furniture already installed on the tube...I checked the price back then and they were very costly (approx. $50) and they only had plastic...I remember thinking that it sounded much more difficult than doing the same thing on an AK. You might want to check into the installation process.

Hey guys get this....... I just got back from goin out to shoot my new one, and I cycled the first round and the entire Trigger assymbly, and "fixed" mag fell out!!!!!

I couldnt get it back together at all!!!! I got to looking on the net, and saw that this one was the sporter version. Doesnt even have stripper clip guide on the bolt face!

I took it back to my local shop where I got it, and they said the stock wasnt made right. The thing wasnt molded right, and was missing key retention pieces.

Traded me for a mint Norinco in wood, straight up, no questions asked. These were 225.00. I paid 160 for mine, and didnt even have to make up the differance. What a great place. I love this shop. The guys are very nice, helpfull, and dont treat customers like idiots. I only buy firearms from them, even though there is 2 other shops. They treat me dumb in the other ones, I guess cause im young, and they think im just a punk kid, even though ive served in the Army, and have more weapons experiance then both of them combined.....

Thought id share this tid bit of info for you.........:o

My AK was easy to remove the upper handguard and replace it when I refinished the wood. SKS looks a bit harder though.......

I like being able to completely turn off the gas port. That way, the boy shoots it as a bolt action, and doesn't get into the habit of rattling away with it.
How do you do that?

The Yugo model is the only SKS with this ability. These models were designed with a NATO spec grenade launcher. There is a valve on the gas port that allows you to stop the action from cycling. For semi-auto mode, it should be in the forward-right setting. When you want to shoot a grenade, you turn the valve to the grenade setting, reverse-left, and load a blank in the chamber. This propelled the grenade. Then you just slide a grenade over the barrel until it snaps into place. You will notice on your Yugo a loose ring. That is the ring that the grenade snaps onto. Then, flip up the grenade sight, aim, and fire.

The Yugo also has flip up night sights. (colored sights. they don't actually glow or anything.)

The SKS has the metal caps pinned to the ends of the wooden handguard. Typically, AK's will have a handguard that is made in such a way that you can simply roll the wooden piece out from the caps which are attached to each other. Pretty cool design, but some of them take quite a bit of effort to roll the wood out the first few times.

I can get an SKS up here but My dream rifle (AK) is highly illegal.I guess the Canadian government is scared of the big,bad AK.Our rifles have to be limited to 5 rounds as well.I really like the idea of a inexpensive gun for roughin it.I want one for hiking when I start packing with my llama. For me an SKS with a folding stock would be ideal.

Heres some pics of mine. Numbers matching Norinco.

If you guys don't mind, take pictures of the triangular cartouches also. I like to see what factory they came from. All of my current SKS's but one are first year factory 26.

Yours don't? Mine glow brightly!
I love the Yugo's and disagree with the others who say they are somehow lower quality. It is true that they do not have chrome-lined barrels. However this is not an issue if you buy one that was unissued. All the chrome does is extended the all ready long barrel life. Anyone who has built an AR knows that the chrome lined barrels actually produce LESS accuracy than the unlined ones. I believe this is true with the SKS as well.

Sure didn't. I've had three of them and none had sights that glowed. That sucks. I thought thats they way all of them were. Two of them were unissued and neither of them glowed. That's upsetting to know now that they were supposed to.

I have 2 SKSs like i said earlier and One is dressed up and the other one is stock. Both are Norincos and both have all matching numbers. One of mine is still in the cosmoline and I have never fired it. The other was my uncles who past away and It was given to me after he died. My uncles one has not been shot alot. I deer hunt with it and the other is just in storage. Ill never sell them because Both were in New condition. I paid 75.00 and 200rounds of ammo for the one thats never been shot. My uncles is the one I shoot pretty regular. Im a pretty lucky guy to have 2 with matching numbers i guess. I love them both and wont ever sell them and yes an SkS is legal to hunt deer with and it will kill one. Its about like a 30 30. I love mine. I will say this, I like the one that I bought because of the wooden stock, its shorter and fits my arms well. My uncles has a folding stock and the stock is to long for me when unfolded. Ill problably put the origional stock back on it, I have it too. Plus ill take the 20rnd mag off and put the original one back on. It just makes sense to me. I dont need all of that fancy stuff on it. I like mine origional.

I like the stock mag. You can get prone and stay low. I put a UTG scout mount on mine with a cheapo NCstar scout scope, and it shoots 2" at 100. I love this rifle. Bought it for 199.00, grabbed a few chest pouches, scouted it, and you can still use the irons and the bayonet.

Does anyone know if you can still use the tech sights with the UTG tri or quad rails?

Some are made like that, but it looks like the height of that one isnt quite high enough for the front post.

Albanian, Russian, Yugo M59.

The Russian and the Yugo have the Kivarri trigger. Made a huge difference. The Alby has a pretty easy trigger but probably cause it's more worn.

I think the M59 is the best shooter but only by a hair. I also have a Chinese but haven't shot it yet.
