SKS Opinions

Albanian, Russian, Yugo M59.

The Russian and the Yugo have the Kivarri trigger. Made a huge difference. The Alby has a pretty easy trigger but probably cause it's more worn.

I think the M59 is the best shooter but only by a hair. I also have a Chinese but haven't shot it yet.

What kind of turnaround time for the trigger job?

Hey Rat! I can't rightly remember. Been a year or two. You just send the trigger group so if you have 2 you can send 1 in and then swap the other into your rifle if you want to shoot it. But I'm thinking maybe it was weeks rather than months.

Nice rifles HD!!! Im diggin that Albanian. You dont see too many of them.

How old are they?

The Russian is 1953 I think the Albanian is the 70's. Not sue on the M59. The Chinese (not pictured) is from the 60's (I think) cause it has a blade bayonet.

Thats true HD. All the ones I have seen(not many lately) were way high, and looked like hell.

I had to swap out the bolt on mine to get it not to jam all the time and it still is touchy with the steel case ammon. The Yugo M67(?) brass cased stuff shoots like a dream in it though.

Still I like the longer stock on the Alby, for me it gives it some stability.

I saw 700 rounds of the yugo ammo in a sealed can at my local shop for 140.00 on clearance. Im thinkin I need to scoop it up, I hadnt ever shot any of it though so I didnt know if its good stuff or not. In a sealed can, I cant inspect it either. I didnt even know its brass cased.

If it's the stuff on the stripper clips I'd snag it. It's berdan primed and corrosive but it shoots great and cycles well.

Sks are wonderful guns, you really can't beat the price for what it is there are lots of mods for them as well. The chinese ones aren't even close to the quality of the eastern block countries ones though. You can trick them out for a very small price to turn them into full auto with banana clip. Do a search for sks ak torrent there an entire video and manuals on how to upgrade and modify by agi. If you can't find it I will upload it in torrent for you.

I've seen some crappy Chinese ones for sure, but the one I got recently appears to be of excellent quality. It's one of the older ones with the blade bayonet though.

Probably in the minority here too but I like them "unbubba'd" as they say on the SKS board. The only mod I really think is worthwhile for me is the trigger mod which lightens and smooths out the trigger pull.

Please dude. You have no idea what you are talking about.

The Chinese SKS is just as good as any other and better than many. In the "SKS shootout" they did on surplus rifles, the Chinese model was actually the most accurate of the bunch. But this aside, on the average you will find the Chicom SKS is as good as any of the others.

Beyond that, we have someone on here who has previously claimed to be a "Doctor" and maybe even a "Ranger" - now telling us how we can make an illegal full auto out of the SKS. ...Can you say "Federal Prison"???

Then there is the issue of the aftermarket mags... If one has little to no experience actually shooting an SKS with the AM "banana clip" it sounds like a great idea. But in practice, not one in 10 will work properly.

The SKS is a great gun IMO. Chinese, Yugo, Russian - they are all good for what they are. You can even use them on urban rifle courses like those offered by John Farnam. ...But do not go with the aftermarket "banana clip" - you won't last 100rds.

Norinco is rough. Attention of a gun smith cleaning up the edges and barrel ends, bedding the stock correctly creates a very accurate piece of equipment.

I bubba'd mine up real good, so call me "Bubba" :D Bear in mind, it's a commercial grade Norinco that came in around '89-90. It looked military, but was never issued to any military force. Matching numbers, but there are NO factory marks...just Norinco, China and Poly USA, ATL, GA stamped on the receiver.

So I decided to make it into a "project" rifle and shooter. I have other mil-surps, an Enfield, Mauser and Mosin-Nagant and I leave those alone, they are historic pieces and shoot just fine.

I understand the Kivarri trigger job is excellent. I emailed him, got no response, and decided to do it myself, it's not that hard. I'm very happy with the results, the trigger pull is still long but it's smooth.

I got an ATI synthetic stock, very solid. I looked at that upper handguard and it does seem to be a PITA to replace. I left it in wood, painted it black to match the stock. How much heavier can that piece of wood be than plastic or metal?

In the last week, I've installed a Tech Sight (aperture sight) at the back end of the receiver. That increases the sight radius from 19 inches to 30 inches  Zeroed it in at 25 yards with Wolf Military Classic and got 1-inch groups. The Tech Sight does change the clean profile of the receiver...a lot of people won't like that chunk of metal sticking out the back, I know I didn't at first...but it did improve my shooting and that's what I was after.

None of these mods improve the accuracy of the barrel, the action or the cartridge...but they do improve my accuracy.

Yeah the Norinco ones are commercial so you aren't really messing up a collectors gun when they are Bubbed out:thumbup: I have nothing against doing it by the way, just like them as is mostly.

I understand, if this were a nice surplus Russian or something like that, I'd leave it as is  The Norinco's not bad, the trigger guard is stamped sheet metal but all other parts seem milled okay, and the barrel is chrome lined for what that's worth. Still, it's built like a rock.

Edit: When I bought this, I also bought an extra receiver cover that had a see-through Weaver-style scope mount welded on; and a 4x20 Red Star scope. It looked sexy but it stuck up way too high, weighs about another 1.5 lbs, and I was never really happy with it. I like the aperture Tech Sight a lot better.

FYI

Before you spout off at the mouth, it would be nice if you actually did some real research on each gun tolerances etc.. I also believe I had stated, that if the poster wanted gunsmith sks file by AGI I would happy to provide it for him or her. If you actually did some research there are websites that break the gun down side by side to show you how both guns are different end result chinese quality isn't the same as Russian. I believe the original poster even indicated that many chinese model aren't that good.

I don't know if you have some sort of impaction problem, I would be more than happy to give you a Harris flush to relieve you of your present condition. If you had bothered to read my posting completely. I said I had tried out for ranger school, and never stated whether I made it through the program or not or am I mistaken ? Furthermore, as for my profession its just a JOB, I don't really see why the attitude given the fact that we have never met in person. Just because my given profession happens to be an MD, this does not mean that I'm better than anyone else, nor have I claim it to be. I cruise this website hoping to increase my knowledge from people who have more experience than myself on various subjects, and also contribute what I have learned through the years. If you are some sort of cocky wanna be I know everything the "dragon bruce lee artist", you need to go live in China. We have this thing called the bill of rights maybe you've heard of it. One would think that anyone who elects the user name of dragon would have built enough wisdom and discipline instead of spewing at the mouth.

This is the first and last posting to your personal attack, if you wish to spew at the mouth some more please pm me. Out of respect for other members , I do not wish to hog up forum space over some play ground issues that apparently you have.
