I bubba'd mine up real good, so call me "Bubba"

Bear in mind, it's a commercial grade Norinco that came in around '89-90. It looked military, but was never issued to any military force. Matching numbers, but there are NO factory marks...just Norinco, China and Poly USA, ATL, GA stamped on the receiver.
So I decided to make it into a "project" rifle and shooter. I have other mil-surps, an Enfield, Mauser and Mosin-Nagant and I leave those alone, they are historic pieces and shoot just fine.
I understand the Kivarri trigger job is excellent. I emailed him, got no response, and decided to do it myself, it's not that hard. I'm very happy with the results, the trigger pull is still long but it's smooth.
I got an ATI synthetic stock, very solid. I looked at that upper handguard and it does seem to be a PITA to replace. I left it in wood, painted it black to match the stock. How much heavier can that piece of wood be than plastic or metal?
In the last week, I've installed a Tech Sight (aperture sight) at the back end of the receiver. That increases the sight radius from 19 inches to 30 inches  Zeroed it in at 25 yards with Wolf Military Classic and got 1-inch groups. The Tech Sight does change the clean profile of the receiver...a lot of people won't like that chunk of metal sticking out the back, I know I didn't at first...but it did improve my shooting and that's what I was after.
None of these mods improve the accuracy of the barrel, the action or the cartridge...but they do improve my accuracy.
