Skulls!?

Since you hate skulls I assume you like hello kitty and butterfly beads for you pink edc knife.

No need for that type of insult(outside of W&C).
Please leave the insults out of the General Forum if you don't mind.

Maybe someone can explain the popularity of the skull motif?

Its largely - though not exclusively - part of one's search for significance. The "look at me" factor. Same with tattoos, strange hair/beards, funky clothes or rides, monster trucks, rice rockets, the Goth look, the grunge look, body builders, and on and on. People want to be significant, and if they cannot do it in meaningful ways, they alter their appearance in order to get attention. Seriously, if a guy has a skull tattoo - or any tattoo - he is begging to be looked at. He wants to be significant. Same with a skull on a knife clip. Sure, it can be cool looking and just fun to look at and play with, but deep down inside, he wants to be noticed.

I disagree. There are many reasons why people get tattoos. Many people get tattoos in places where they can only be seen if they are naked. For many people, getting a tattoo is a very personal thing, not a means of public expression. Many people get tattoos just for themselves.

I've known people who got tattoos as a way of honoring deceased friends and family members. Some of those tattoos were on their chest, over their heart.

Read my last post on the subject of skull tattoos for an example, post #42.

Ah, but what about people with tattoos that are in areas covered with clothing?
Sure they'll get noticed when naked, but you tend to get noticed when naked, even without tattoos.

Betcha' judges just love skull bead lanyards, fobs, etc., makes their job easier when
the prosecution rolls out the evidence.
Especially the skull gripping the dagger between it's teeth.

Let me just leave this here then.

Okay, I'll admit that I like those two that are a "chiseled" look... Where might one find those? :D

Also, spot on about calling them fobs instead of lanyards, Marci. Don't know why that never occurred to me before (could be the density of my skull...)

Just leaving this here...

I don't like threads about not liking skulls.

Threads about sorta liking skulls are sorta OK though....

I wish this thread was about ice cream, I don't like ice cream.

I love skulls. In fact I have three skull tattoos. For me its not about being cool or insecurity issues. My love for skulls dates back to my childhood and being a fan of metal music. I was born in 1980 so I have the imagery burned into my brain. And the first time I saw a picture of a skull that was done with an aggressive style I remember being intrigued, scared and excited all at the same time. And even though human skulls are pretty basic the variation on that theme is almost limitless. I have always feared death. And I have always been drawn to things I fear. Snakes, spiders and all sorts of deadly venomous creatures have interested me. Skulls have just been a part of my life for so long that they just feel like home to me. Oddly enough though on knives rarely do I like what had been done. Probably because for the longest time I only saw skull motifs in cheap junk knives. So when I see them on higher end offerings its hard not to associate it with the lesser knives I have come to know of that style. Especially when you think of every overdone fantasy blade that just goes absolutely overboard with it. I think the only knives I have ever liked with skulls are the custom skulpted (yes I went there) handles. But not inlayed skulls or beads. Thats my take. I cant speak for the guys who only like skulls because they think it makes them a Bad mofo.

I love skulls. <snip>

Thanks for taking the time to explain your view of it; I really appreciate that. You reminded me that I used to like the Grateful Dead skulls-n-roses themes. That was a while back. Maybe I fear death, too, and just react differently. Oops...I really didn't want to get into analysis mode, but I guess that happened already.

I'll just say Thank You to all the well-intentioned responses. This has been educational, in various ways. :)

im a big misfits fan so i actually like them, though i dont actually own any knives with skulls on them as of yet.
