SM-100 Myth debunked...

Does anything in this thread tell us about the characteristics of SM-100 as opposed to the characteristics of this blade?

The links I posted indicated that SM-100 behaves in a similar manner to titanium, perhaps better than Ti for use as a blade. It really should be seen as its own class, out there with dendritic cobalt or ti, but not in the same class as CPM supersteels.

Think of how many come here asking not about the maker but about what steel they should pursue - about D2 instead of about Dozier. Those are the folks who get burned in the search of blades of Unobtainium, not the buyer who seeks the master maker.

I think alot of these people also don't know what to expect from steels. They believe that S125V automatically means bestest knife in the world, ignoring importance of geometry, heat treatment, or the knife's intended scope of work.

Played with this material a few times and found it is sensitive to the temperature.
The SM 100 blade I made was heat-treated 100-200 F ? over the recommended temperature for 20 min and part of it turned into brittle pieces - I could break it with my fingers. Never figured out why... I asked people from Summit but they couldn't tell what was wrong.
So I used a torch instead of an oven to heat-treat the other piece of SM 100 that I had and made it into an impact tool. I am very happy with the performance of it as an impact tool.

I have several Mayo knives, the latest being out of SM100. Of them all, I like the Talonite best, followed by the Stellite and then the SM100. Just the feel of the edge is what I based my likes on. That being said, I carry the Buck Mayo 172 with the CM154 blade most of all. The pricing of any SM100 knife is a bit hard to take, but if you really have to have an SM100...

I have mayo sm100 folders and 6k and talonite, like copfish. And about 5 other sm100 knives from Dwyer, graham, etc. I have not had chipping issues yet...but I don't try to break my knives as though it were a contest on toughness. People watch movies too much I think about what is physically possible with any metals. Biggest problem I have with sm100 knives is they cut into my nice ovenware porcelain plates when I use em on steak and leave little silver streaks. See pic. I don't care about armchair scientists views. The sm100 knives I have are used for edc cutting not chopping or prying. And they don't rust and the metal is not soft like 6k or 6bh. Not sure what is not to like.

Tom Mayo told me a long time ago when I whined about the edge durability of Talonite... "You cut with a knife, screw with a screwdriver and pry with a prybar, dumbass..." What a great guy!

How is this not deleted? This is why the forums are dying. this is horrible information. Bugout Bill thanks for your reply to this thread making it almost worth while.

Interesting to read my old comments. I would still like to own a Stellite 6K or SM-100 knife for EDC, not for prying or smashing.

The irony is the necro poster doesn't like the thread, but bumped it back so everyone can read it?

Dying? I logged in at 7:00am this morning, and there were over 2000 people online here. Don't sound like death to me. :D

I remember when we first hit 2000 members. Yes, it was a long time ago...

As for the original topic. Hey, people learn, and life goes on.

We delete spam, we may move trolling offline. The rest is up for discussion. The forums are not dying. As to what is horrible information ... information? It's a discussion, with people interested in the subject trying to learn about it.

Some people even notice when years have gone by.

I was disappointed when I was searching for information from google about SM-100 and this is what I Found. This Is not correct information. The title says myth debunked. You should either change the title to Moron has no idea what he is talking about sm-100. This information comes up in a google search. and is not relevant what so ever about any steel or metal. Thanks to gentlemen that know what there talking about and provided additional information. The guy in the you tube video is a moron thats not name calling thats his IQ. Sm-100 is very expensive to purchase.

Expensive doesn't mean good. That seems to be a main point of the old discussion.

I had an SM-100 knife. Was cool, but failed in the "batoning an I-beam test" so I started carrying an Opinel instead. Much better.
