Small EDC / SD folder (read description)

The leek should be sufficient. It is small, but it is AO. I'm not sure why you are worried about getting such a good grip on it, unless you plan your hands and knife to be in like a bloodbath...?

On another note, if you are getting it for a non-knife person, at least the leek will for the most part always open because of the AO. I'm not sure who the knife is for, but it would be moot point to have a knife for SD if the user doesn't know how to use it, is afraid of it, or freaks out and doesn't open all the way etc, etc. At least with the leek its 99% of the time either opened because of the AO or closed because of the same AO. Speedsafe is biased towards the closed position.

A knife can be just as dangerous to the user if they don't know what they are doing with it.

In my opinion, like someone suggested earlier, maybe invest in a Krav Maga class or something similar.

for a small EDC, a spyderco delica, buck vantage or even the kabar small dozier folder would be good options.

Can't use a rock, stick, screwdriver, baseball bat, for SD.

Yes you can...you just cannot CARRY SOMETHING EXPRESSLY AS A WEAPON.

You are allowed under the law to defend your life by all means at your disposal...you'll just get to explain it in court later (usually) rather than getting a freaking medal.

Look at the ways the laws actually are rather than listening to sad, defeatist hype.

For a non-knife person with no real interest in even the basics of defence, a knife is probably not a great idea. But, since you asked, I would also recommend something like a yellow Spyderco Salt-1 or Tasman, perferably serrated. They are somewhat simple knives with a resonable lock, resonable grip, reasonably quick to open even for someone who's not proficient with knives, and will be slightly easier to locate (yellow) if it's carried loose in a purse. It may cost more that you're looking to spend, but... Another option that is less expensive is something made buy Byrd like the Cara Cara or what ever thier hawkbill is called.

Carrying Pepper spray is a more serious offense than carrying a knife? That doesn't sound right at all.

Pepper spray is only used for self-defense. You aren't allowed to carry stuff for self-defense .

A knife can be a tool which just happens to be useful in an unintentional SD scenario.

It's weird, check this out:

That's good news for two criminal defence lawyers, who say the idea of restrictions or bans on knives is fraught with problems exactly like the ones Saskatchewan has encountered.

"It's knee-jerk politicking at its very worst," said lawyer Danny Gunn.

The laws in Canada are much more intent based and open to interpretation.

Boberama - I believe you're over thinking this. As was mentioned it would be better to save your life with a handgun, knife, a leather/lead sap and explain your actions to the prosecutor than be beaten, raped, murdered or whatever is on your mind.

I suppose with all of these suggestions you have a lot of choices on knives and non-lethal detterrents as well. Before my State issued CCW permits for guns, I carried one anyway for about 18 yrs. I didn't look or act like a criminal and never gave the police "cause" to feel that I needed to be pulled aside and patted down.

Did I take a risk? Yes - but my handguns saved my skin on 3 different occasions. I was fortunate to have taken the measures that I felt were necessary to preserve my life. Now I can legally carry - go figure huh?

This person doesn't care about knives or defending themself either. The best you can probably do is to sit down and express your concerns and the whole legal issue as well and come to some resolution that hopefully will satisfy both of you.

Good luck - I can't think of anything to recommend, except there is a wicked Kershaw Leek (which I own), it's a framelock a/o flipper. It has some serrations and a scary sharp S30V blade. It's well capable of of opening a human being up from head to toe. Maybe you've seen it? It's not one of the more standard innocous Leeks but is pretty darn mean little critter.

Kershaw Leek 1660TGRYST - google it. :)

I'll check out all your suggestions.

Carrying a handgun here is the equivalent of a felony, not a misdemeanor.

And there's little to no violent crime unless you are asking for it (for example, joining a gang or visiting the Hell's Angels bar at night).

Sure I'd like to carry a gun but the penalties outweigh the risk.

Two words for you: Dog Spray.;)

Yep! has 2.5% OC in it. Legal in all 50 states of the USA. I used to sell it online. I looked at my wife's expensive Mace "Hot Pink" defense spray the other day expecting 10% or more and what do I find but 2.5% OC in it! Marketing to the pink color canister - woman factor in us men! Ticked me off that I fell for it. :(

Handguns are illegal to carry here (%&$!ing government) and possession of pepper spray is an indictable offense.

So a small knife could cut and distract an attacker enough to get away.

An animal with claws is better than no claws at all IMO.
You can't carry pepper spray, but you can carry dog repellant or bear spray which is still OC based. (Oleoresin Capsicum)

since you are committed to buying a knife, i have one suggestion. make sure it is NOT serrated. Serrations can get caught in clothing if youre gonna be slashing in defense, good way to lose your knife

I doubt if a good knife like a "Civilian" would bat an eye at clothing. Just my opinion.

That would only happen with leather, wool, or jeans. If said person isn't into knives, serrations would take the need for sharpening out of the equation.

OP is looking for a knife in the skyline price range

You're right Seanifred. I recommend a Kershaw Skyline or two if you want to become a spinning cyclone of death. :D

Of course that title will set you back another $39 :(

Surprised no one has mentioned the $10 answer.....monkey fist on her keyring....easy.
