if your going to use it for SD, bigger is better! remember, your gonna wanna actually be able to penetrated deep enough to cause death (if not, your not really in any danger and you in most places you will in more trouble then not). Actually if your really need a knife for SD, i highly suggest getting a gun (btw: I couldn't care less if its legal or illegal for you to do so. its the best way to protect yourself if you really are in fear for your life)! Dont think a knife is gonna get you out of a bad situation without getting hurt and your lucky if you get away with only a few cuts.

seriously, a small knife is a bad idea at best and if you can, run away! I'd run away if at all possibly (I dont care if someone calls me chicken; I can always come back with a gun, a car, or the law and they will be running away like a chicken!).

@RedDevil

If someone's grabbed and shoved into a van then a small knife is infinitely better than nothing at all.

Just my 0.02.

I want suggestions not criticism.

yes and no. most likely they wont be kidnapped but just mugged and in that case, if someone is unable or unwilling to use a knife he will be in more trouble then not. I personnaly say thin the herd. Let the stupid die. if you wont protect yourself, your deserve what you get! I'm not saying those people should get attacked but if they are and they are unwilling to stop it, your pretty much agreeing with it. who is this knife for anyways? also, if you live in a bad area, you should move! seriously, get the F out if your in fear for your life!

P.S. what about a tazer?

I think the OP lives in a low crime area where if you mind your business you won't have problems. Whatever his motives for this post - if the knife is for him or a relation/friend has been kept from us for some reason.

My post is to confirm that I feel the same way as you. As cold blooded as it seems, let those politically correct, anti - gun & knife & anti-violence, tree hugging types perish like the sheep they are. The police do what they can but they rarely can stop a murder, beating, mugging, rape (insert violent crime of your choice). The response time is just too slow to prevent these crimes.

Police may catch the perpetrators but that's after the fact, if they do. I believe in taking very proactive measures to insure that I and whoever I can influence, be prepared for worst case scenarios and how to behave if they find themselves in a violent confrontation.

In typical hostage movies for e.g. I would much prefer to take my chances on picking my spot and fighting back with lethal intent, than die on my knees or laying on the ground waiting for some animal to decide if I'll live or die.

I don't view the word we use around here "sheeple" as derogatory. I think it describes the mindset of today's compliant and fearful people who think life will always go on without a hitch and that we folks who love guns, knives, and other weapons are lunatics and dangerous. :)

Take a look at the buck vantage, spyderco delica, kershaw skyline. those are all good knives in your price range.

I'm not going to comment on using any of those for self defense a small folder is pretty much useless without a lot of training and a completely different mind set.
Frankly you would be alot better off practicing your running. Nothing wrong with running away.

take it easy

So basically this is a 'get a woman a knife thread'. Honestly if that is the case it probably really doesn't matter if she was carrying an Emerson or a wharncliffe bladed lockback.

Your 2nd troll post in a couple minutes dude, go out and kick a tree stump, then come back and try again!

give the person a plane ticket to America. Any government that does not let their people defend themselves... well i'll leave that to the political arena. Back on topic - all these suggestions are fine. But remember this - there is a fine line between what the government thinks you need and what you think you need. I'm not advocating breaking the law, but if your life depends on it, you can tell the gestapo of wherever you live to shove it.

the delica is an awesome knife. i have knives that cost many times the price of the delica and i carry the delica most. i havent had any formal knife training however i rather have my delica then nothing. odds r the most i will cut with is it some fruit but do forbid something happens i wont want to rely on a two blade swiss army knife.

the byrd crossbill meadowlark would be great for simple self defense inmop. it is 3 inches, very affordable, strong and reliable, and extremely sharp. feels good in the hand. great for work too, easy to use, not too large, better option than the spyderco civilian. this is what i would give to my mom, gf, wife, sister etc if they asked me for something to carry.

pic is from new graham knives

I have a Bryd g10 and ss crossbill and that damn thing is nearly the same size as a civilian. great knife although the G10 opens much faster/easier then the SS does and its much lighter. also, the G10 doesnt scratch.

that being said, I have a few civilians and although the blade lenght may be close, the civilian is so much more vicious looking but thats just me. I like both but if i had to carry one to attack someone, id carry the civilian. If i needed to use one to cut stuff other then humans, I'd carry the crossbill.

P.S. When i travel, I usually pickup a crossbill where ever i land and carry that while i go and then mail it to someone I know or to myself afterwards.

I'm not cracking on your Byrd but it's dwarfed by a Civilian 5/8 inches longer blade plus longer handle - lot more reach but you realy have to pay for it $$$
