Whats the steel on that one Crimson?
Sweet hatchet bro!
I want to run a full sized hawk that is the same exact design as the hex hawk. Obviously the cutouts wouldnt be functional then but i think it would look cool.
But man.... That would be a lot more hand filing than on the minis LOL
Unless you left the cut outs the same size...
Looks like we have more snow coming in for the weekend. I personally don't mind it so much, but all the salt that folks are using on the sidewalks is hard on the dogs' paws.![]()
I have been REALLY unimpressed with any of Cold Steel's offerings for Khukuri.
...a Himalayan Imports...
Me too. They're OK I guess, but they're mostly "khuk-shaped" machetes... which doesn't impress me at all. I have not gotten my hands on the heavy one WW mentioned; that might be better. I don't know.
Don't believe the hype. After reading about them and dang near buying one for years, I had an opportunity to re-handle one.
I was deeply disappointed by it. The steel was soft as mud, the grinds were just plain awful, and the fit/finish was what one might kindly call "flea-market quality". One good thing was, it was easy to tear down... two drilling procedures through the aluminum "bolts" holding it together and it fell clean apart, exposing all the rust underneath. It took longer to clean the gunk out of my drill's flutes than it did to dis-assemble it.
It was a huge PITA to put new scales on it simply because the tang was so crooked and wobbled and uneven and just generally wrong that I couldn't even find a straight line or plane from which to start. If I had re-ground it straight and true, there would have been almost nothing left :grumpy: Silver lining? I learned to use neoprene liners to fill in all the horrific gaps and sent it back out with a handle I wasn't completely ashamed of.
All history and "legends" aside, my professional opinion is that when you pay people in third-world countries a couple dollars a week to cobble stuff together out of old rusty leaf-springs... you kinda get what you paid for.
I'll say this much, though... the deep scratches all over it were buffed real shiny, and it was damn sure easy to sharpen.![]()
Just last week in the chat room James was going on and on all about a fully jimped HI kukri, Going as far as saying it was the best thing ever.... I almost believed him until i smelled the peanut butter remains on my mustache.. AT that point reality hit me like a brick in the face and i knew he must just be drunk again.
I have never used ANY kukri or kukri like knives.. Closest i have gotten is the machax. So i have no idea how the Ghurka would perform.... But i like the specs. I do have the ontario khukri on the way so i will soon get to see how that one performs anyways.

So what's funny is, Frost and his contemporaries used to go out and do public readings, and Dartmouth (iirc) has a collection of recordings of Robert Frost - a little of which I heard on the local NPR some months ago. Apparently, he was a lot like a musician might be now, trying to get his poetry out there so the people would buy it. It struck me because I guess I mostly thought of him as a recluse. ...but to hear his voice with that NH accent....really fascinating.I think Kipling would sound good with a Kentucky accent. I'm going to try this.
Was just looking at KC's 2015 preorders and saw some interesting stuff... Simple carbon steel designs coming out of crkt, kinda interesting. Benchmade is releasing some simple 1095 woods blades with plastic handles and leather sheaths for around 100 bucks. A Bowie and a (if I remember) Bolo, they remind me a lot of a BK9/BK4. Little more interesting... But I think the most interesting is the CPM 3V Master Hunter from Cold Steel for around a Benjamin. Definitely going to have to check that out... Also hopefully the Becker Khuk, and some KA-BAR EK will be available soon....
Oh man, I feel a shark attack coming on....
This one caught my eye, would be even better if it was CarbonV, or better yet, 3V. (BTW, it's 420HC)
