We would usually buy kits from a local home brew place. We would get the 5 gallon kits that had the grains you boiled for the wort, I am trying to remember the exact process as it has been probably 16 years or so since we last made a batch... but I don't remember adding regular sugar to it..we did use tap water though. I know my friend has one of those beer in a box type kits now that he has been using with some success. I am supposed to go by this weekend to try his latest batch.

Me and Pointy have talked beer making at length. From a scientific standpoint it's fascinating what happens during the process, and what little tweaks and changes can make or break a beer. Water purity was mentioned during one of those conversations, and as it happens I have access to a water filter that will take the water down to zero ppm and deionize it. Drinking it is insane because there is nothing. No flavor, no taste, no smell, no nothing. I was informed however that it would not work due to the yeast needing some things in the water, but that to start with that and add yeast food would give us the most accurate results as we would know exactly what was going into it, versus using other water that you just don't know what it contains.

Most of the time I used Poland Springs water - but a lot of beer recipes do specify water hardness and mineral content, which you can purchase at a lot of brewing supply places. Any brewer will tell you that since beer is 95% water, you really wanna make sure of your water quality.
Manoman I wish I wasn't flat on my back taking all these drugs, cause now I really really really want a beer. Maybe I should stop taking the drugs and see if beer will solve the problem - it is, after all the cause of and solution to all mankind's problems (Homer Simpson quote)

That makes me wonder how many beers are affected / dependent on the local water source for their particular taste.. I have heard about big breweries buying small local or european beers and moving production somewhere else and people stop drinking it because it doesn't taste right anymore.

I lucked out today. I was at Gander Mountain killing time with my two littlest ones (4 and 18mos) waiting to pick up my 5yr old from school. I saw some great gear. I love all the guns they have and I handled a few knives. As I was leaving, my 18 month old started crying. I quickly got her in the car and took off (driving soothes her). I get to my son's school and realize I left my EDC bag in the cart. I might have cussed at this point:D. I call them and ask the lady if she can run out and check. She told me it was already handed in and they will hold it for me. I go pick it up and thank them profusely. I asked if it was a customer or employee. She said someone came in and told them that there was a big bag sitting in a cart so they went out and pushed the cart it was in into the back (warehouse area). When I got there they asked me to describe a feature on the bag, I told them it had a BeckerHead patch on it and they brought it up to me. I am unsure if it was turned in because they were afraid it was a bomb or because someone was being honest and doing the right thing. All know is that it never would have happened at Walmart. I probably had over a grand of gear in the bag--here a the main things that were in there---Bark River Classic Drop Point Hunter FPR, Bk14 with kryptoglow scales, SAK one-hand trekker, Blacked out Kershaw Leek, Ontario Rat1, Kodak Playsport zx3 waterproof camcorder, Leatherman Wave, new 5x7 sil-ny tarp, petzl headlight, streamlight microstream, maglite xl100,maxped micro pouch, klean kanteen, various firestarting gear, and a $80 portable charger for my phone (and other stuff not of much monetary value).........I got lucky

You know what's a bad idea? Not eating for 18 hours and then trying to move all of the heaviest stuff you own from your old place to your new place without any help. Double bacon cheesburger at the local diner really hit the spot. Now I'm gonna go hit the sack for a few hours and I'll be good as new. I'm normally asleep right this time anyway.

...when I asked what he used for water we both immediately knew what the problem was..... NEVER use city tap water!

You're absolutely right... for any project requiring a modicum of chemical purity, municipal tap water is a very bad idea. It's going to introduce all kinds of stuff like chlorine, flourides, lye, and caustic potash into your formula, in amounts that are nearly impossible to predict/account for in a delicate "recipe". It might work fine, or it might not... and you'll go bonkers trying to figure out why.

Funny but true story... 90+% of "bottled drinking water" is just tap water from somewhere else. There are basically no regulations on it at all, and no real way of telling WTF is actually in it. If you don't have your own filtering systems, it's best to start with distilled water.

...as it happens I have access to a water filter that will take the water down to zero ppm and deionize it. Drinking it is insane because there is nothing.

That's cool. When I worked in chemical plants, we used deionizers for the really critical aqueous stuff.

Another fun fact... Deionized and/or distilled water will actually make you sick as a dog if you drink too much of it... it's such a good solvent that it will literally leach minerals out of your blood and can cause organ failure eventually.

You know it when you see it. Enough said. The politics in this country are increasingly polarizing, and while members of a knife board tend to lean in similar directions, political inclinations are not consistent across the membership. Nothing, in my experience, can derail threads faster than political contention. That's why this board has a dedicated Political subforum--so that those tensions don't spill out into the wider subforums. If you want to comment on candidates, make policy remarks, ply a political agenda, etc., please simply do so in the correct forum. As some have already noted, BFC is not the place for religious agendas either.

Not that long ago, gus did post about his crack-smoking mayor. I didn't consider that a political post, however, because he wasn't pushing one party or another. He was simply offering commentary and entertainment regarding human idiocy. That's something we can all appreciate.

You got extremely lucky man!

Just had another Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale. The pumpkin taste really is not strong at all. Just adds a hint of interest.

and for the same reason.
I love you, man.

Right on.

I thought twice before posting that silly toaster pic the other day, but I should have thought thrice. That was dumb of me, and I apologize for it. Not because I meant to be offensive or devisive, but because it could have taken an unpleasant turn. I'm not here for that.

I'm just here for the knives and the food and the booze, and making pals. :)

Sorry... Thats not true everywhere... can't say about other places but here in Florida, at least central Florida, there are some regulations. I specifically know of one bottler as an example. Now... some of their claims are misleading, but its not tap water.

Doc

That's good to hear.

Notice the "90+%" part of my quote? Yeah. Ol' JT don't play around with that sort of thing. ;)

The only reason I know about this is that I worked for the local water management district. The bottling company had to have its wells inspected and the water tested every so often. The claim was that is was "spring" water... ehh. It came from a big commercial production well, not really a spring, but both come from underground. So not really a lie, but a little misleading I guess. Another famous bottler used to state it was filtered water, and they used an RO filter (reverse osmosis). They convert salt water on Sanibel Island that way. ( I haven't been down there in a while, I guess they still do).

Wayne Whittaker is screwed. This was his only outlet for publicity. Oh well, he sucked as an alderman anyway.

Wayne Whittaker is more redneck mafia than politician. The stories his pickup truck could tell...
