Only 30mph wind here. Was 62 and rainy, and today is supposed to snow and drop back down to 0f. Wild weather everywhere, it seems. Hang onto to something solid you guys!

Seriously. It cooled down a week or so ago here but today it's humid and dark with swirling winds and storms on their way. Who knows. This has been a weird winter for us down here, sounds like the same is true for our northern brothers.

Glad to say only a couple of touch downs and no major damge from all the twisters in the area last night. Quite a storm though. Eighty MPH wind gusts in some places.

Glad to hear everybody's ok, I slept through everything here.

For anyone interested, that outdoor store that Really Enjoys Issuing dividends to it's members has a sale on a couple of the Osprey Kestrel packs (58 & 68). About $130-140 with free shipping to your door, still has the 100% satisfaction guarentee, and can make returns to the store if needed.

Too good to pass up so I thought I'd try a little bit smaller pack in the 58 liter model.

Who knows of a good/creative way to increase the efficiency of my fireplace? Besides spending a grand on an insert?

spends two grand on a really good insert?

i have a fire place, and a vague plan!

1) get a metal chimney liner - forever and done.

2) i was thinking insert (moreso brand - spendy but pretty and they have a FAN option)...

but i have a fairly BIG fireplace (42x36 or something)...

3) someone suggested that i can put a good sized wood stove in there, without modifying much, and have the stove stick out onto the hearth more... that provides a LOT more surface area, and then you can put peltier fans (powered by heat only) on the top of the stove, ALONG with a pan of water, and that keeps the house moister, and move the air a lot.

4) find strategic places to put lower power quiet fans to circulate the air. in a corner, or pointing up the stairs. think airlfow. they even make corner fans that sit in the upper corner of a door frame to pull the air in a little - they're just computer muffin fans.

5) get a pellet stove in another room as well?

6) fans...

This would be my vote.
My current fantasy involves adding a segment to our circulated hot water baseboard line. It runs very close to the wood stove location, and I could put a segment to jump behind the stove (with appropriate valving). That would distribute the heat around the house MUCH more efficiently by convection.

just a flesh wound has another flesh wound-----

Wood burning stove.

Fireplaces have always been very inefficient, most actually bring the temp down.

Storms raging here. Hate living in a trailer. Eh, oh well.

Just got a call from seems I'm getting a promotion. WTF!?!?!
