I have a really stupid question. I know it's a stupid question, but I'm genuinely curious... How do the fire hydrant pipes keep from freezing?

Also, this is from

Thought I would shoot myself in the foot on this GAW but maybe a Beckerhead would win it.

This is the hill that my parent's live on. The actual driveway is an 8' rise in roughly 18' long.

Ain't snowing here, but it sure is raining. Fortunately not enough to flood the garage. Been doing laundry all day (day off) but I have a file tempering in the oven. Gonna hack at it and see what happens and if I end up with something neat aftewards. :D

Hoss, I think the main reason people don't go .22LR for defensive purposes (aside from false information that larger calibers have more "stopping power") is that the ammo is a lot more likely to fail to go bang because of the inherent delicacy of rimfires. That's certainly sufficient for me to not carry rimfire ammo for a defensive weapon. And I know you were talking about .22 WMR, not .22 in general. It's just that .22LR is the weakest round, and it's still plenty lethal. .22 WMR is clearly going to be more powerful.

And it's not that it's been used to stop just as many (that would be false). It's that, when it HAS been used, it hasn't taken significantly more rounds. Bigger bullets with more powder behind them only really matter when it comes to shooting at range or through concealment. At which point, you're likely to not be in the "defensive" realm for a jury, anyways. More, the statistics I'm referring to aren't rounds to drive an opponent off. It's the number of hits it's taken to incapacitate them. No matter the caliber, at defensive ranges, statistically, it's been 2-3 rounds to end the threat to the point where the opponent isn't shooting back. If it weren't for the (relative) unreliability of rimfire ammo, I think there's really no question that a .22 rimfire round would be the ticket for defensive purposes. It's got minimal recoil, so it's easier to stay on target, and it's just a lot less expensive than anything else, so you can get a lot more bangs for your buck practicing to put those shots where they count. Also smaller, so you can carry more ammunition. Always better to have more bullets than fewer in a gunfight, all things considered.

Too bad it's more delicate and unreliable. Also impossible to find these days. What's ammo availability like in Pueblo these days?

Can't find .22lr down here. Sucks. I don't think most people even realize that rimfire tends to be less reliable that centerfire and in my experience it's still pretty dang reliable.

Are you sure they're "incapacitated"? Just because a person has stopped fighting doesn't mean they're incapacitated. They simply could (and often do) come to the conclusion that the risk of death is not worth the reward of whatever they did that got them shot. Maybe they were incapacitated by .22lr, it's happened, but I when I think incapacitated I think of someone who is no longer physically capable of presenting a threat whether they want to or not.

When I choose what to carry I look at it like this. If I have to use lethal force, that bullet is not going to care what every other bullet did before it. It's an isolated incident independent from statistical data says it should do. It will probably behave similar to all the others so I don't ignore it completely but I try to imagine, in that single isolated incident what is going to give me the best chance. Larger bullets mean more tissue is damaged and displaced and that means improved likelihood of rendering the threat physically incapable of hurting me. Short of firsthand experience, or at least some seriously good documentation, there's no way anyone is going to convince me otherwise.

I didn't realize it had one. Looks like its off the list... It popped up on the radar after playing around with a friend's. I haven't researched them much since I am not in the position to purchase anytime soon.

It's worth noting that even though I don't prefer them, I've never heard of a single person having an issue with the mag disconnect on an SR pistol. But you gotta go with what you think is best.

Sorry bout that. I had no idea I was ruffling anyone's feathers. I'm pretty broken up about it. :(

Yep, he's had a burr about us for a while now after his last little hissy fit.

Anyone that can't get along with this crowd has serious issues. Fer cryin' out loud, you guys put up with me  well, at least to my face... I don't prolly wanna know what y'all say behind my back...

Gotta go move some water around again... I'm thinking if I had a fire hose I could get all the snow off real easy from the hill. The rest of the family doesn't like that idea. They seem to think the hill will turn into ice if I do that.

Hose it down and then quickly sprinkle the whole thing with broken glass for traction?

A fire hydrant has a valve underground below the freeze line. When you turn it on it fills up but there is a hole at the bottom with gravel around it, so when the valve is shut the water in the hydrant is supposed to drain out before it freezes. Some times these holes get plugged up then when you use a hydrant in cold weather it wont drain out and it bursts.

That is actually pretty clever. I had no idea and was just thinking about it and that thought came into my brain. I figured you'd be the one to answer but I know some of the other guys around here are pretty smart in their own ways so they may know too.

They didn't go for the glass suggestion either James. I tried, they said it would probably put a hole in their precious tires.

I had to drive a lady up that hill. I didn't have to, I offered to. When I was getting into her car and she starts rambling on about her life I started laughing. She didn't know why I couldn't explain it. But what tickled my funny bone was she invited someone she has never met before into her car and then afterwards realizes I'm a total stranger that she has never met and for all she knows could kill her and throw her into the trunk of her crappy little car and drive off and her only "defense" is to tell me about her life and her kids and talking about how many people are going to miss her.

I couldn't explain that to her while I'm driving her car up the hill otherwise that would REALLY freak her out I was sure.

You should have said, "Hold on, little lady. It's time for the drag race with Death!" and then gunned it.

It was a Mazda 3... I was embarrassed to be seen just getting into the car. I'm pretty sure in ANY drag race, even with death, it would have lost.

agreed about the PMR-30 being silly.
IF the .22mag produced full velocity from a short barrel it would be rather awesome. But it does NOT because with a possible single exception, those cartridges are loaded with slow-burning rifle powder AND there's a limit to their peak pressure because of the rimfire case. A PMR-30 in 5.7x28 would be a TOTALLY different story because they are loaded with fast-burning powder at higher pressures, but then those cartridges are thicker so you wouldn't get 30 rounds. And FN already makes their own version. And the ammo will be spendy too.

Also, .22WMR is nasty loud for its punch from a pistol, so it's not very utilitarian. Fun? Sure, but expensive to run compared to a .22LR pistol, and all you get is the extra noise with a smidge more velocity. Would I like a .22WMR pistol? Sure, as an interchangeable cylinder with .22LR in a single-action. Or in the Ruger single-six hunter ;)
But realistically? I'd only shoot .22LR in it 'cause I don't shoot anything but paper with handguns.

Just to be clear, I love the .22WMR in a LONG gun. Loved it even more before the price of ammo doubled. Now I don't bother shooting it recreationally (which means at all) because handloading centerfire costs about the same.

pmr-30 with standard rounds is silly. the nice nickel brass stuff with ballistic hollow points is very interesting. there's a dude on youtube dispatching wild hogs with that. they have PUNCH. almost like a light 9mm. stilll not a lot of recoil, but they definitely feel more lively.

50 bmg to .17 hmr, even pellet guns. nobody wants to get shot with that stuff. ouch!

but yeah, the pmr-30. zero recoil. accurate. weighs 18 oz fully loaded? it redonkulously fun. for people who are recoil sensitive, it could be "a thing". i'd buy another one if it was the latest model, and cheap.

rmr-30. KelTec promies "end of year production for sure this time". lol. HK-MP7 styled carbine with 16.5 ish inch barrel? that should be a piece of work.

i'm eyeballing a bolt action odd ball caliber next. maybe .22 hornet, or even 7.62x39. how about .17 hmr in a carbine?

Ethan's PMR is a jam o matic. Not sure what ammo he's using, but he says its finicky.

I wanted one instantly after seeing his. After shooting it.......not so much...

1 mag, 3 failures to eject.

I do like that big ass mag though. Thats a lot of heat.

Now that PLR 16/22 is looking pretty good. Deck it out with the rails, put my Aimpoint H1 Micro on it, perfect gun for my new Xterra. I call my Xterra Mayhem. It has skulls on it.....

:D

Thought I'd offer this to you guys before I post in exchange. I got it for 20.00 and I don't have the time to work on it... I think its either a 2x42 or a 1-1/2x42. Pm me just pay for shipping.. it probably wieghs about 75 pounds

My back hurts like blazes......

Getting old sucks.......having to work for a living sucks more. I should have been born rich instead of handsome.......

Moose
You still have time, at least for the rich part...then you can just buy handsome.

This almost calls for a thread, "Beckerheads, How do you use your pass?"
This would allow everyone to tell their stories about how they use their free BH passes. Be it yelling out their BH number in order to get into a movie for free, getting out of a ticket with a BH patch or cutting in line at Disney World while waving a BK9.
If you're waving the King around at Disney World, there's more to worry about than your place in line. Best bet is grandma in a wheelchair - last time we were there, we started calling her (my mom) "grandma fast pass". Just wheel her up, and in goes the whole family.

Puma Speed cats. I was wearing them till the first time I slid, then I switched them out for a pair of Rocky Alpha boots.
rocky159386_88535_jb.jpg

These boots.
Sorry, they looked white (or at least that's what I thought I saw) in the pic.
Unnngh.....laying here with a SCREAMING lower back.

Not sure what I did, but even Ranger candy ain't making a dent in the twisted muscle department.

I must rise and begin Teh Cooking for Kiddies.........

Must rise.....

must rise.....

Moose
Be extremely careful with that back, Moose....a ruptured disc will definitely ruin your life for a couple of months. I've been out of work (mostly) since Labor Day. Should go back in a couple of weeks, but it's not really like having free time when you can't drive or even stand up. Drive a normally active person right over the edge....

Ah that's right. People dared to show bias toward Beckers in the Becker subforum. I remember now. Psyop, dude, put your pants back on.

My BK10 needs some micarta..... Any good hints on scrounging up some appropriate green canvas sheets?
