That's gonna look incredible if you quarter-saw it. Let me know if you have too much to use :p

It looks promising... I made a couple wedges out of the spalted outer area:

Ok, that is some beautiful stuff. What else are you making with that wood? I'm thinking, becker scales!

The last time I had a problem like this, turns out the sender had transposed 2 of the zip code digits. The PO guy, when I finally asked in person, could pull up the actual label on it. Since human hands never touch the packages until the computer finally determines that package X has a problem, the system just keeps bouncing the package back and forth between the senders PO and the zip on the label. The PO guy put an alert on it to flag it and it arrived 2 days later.

Thanks man i may have to check to see if they can put an alert on this one!!

Wow, I love wood..... Hoping to have a little time myself today.
Um you go get em!
I was asking for that, I guess....but considering we're having a snow day today and there are 3 very underage girls here and the "of age" one won't....well, shop time is like being under a herd of elephants: basement shop with playroom above. Right now it sounds like there's some competitive gymnastics going on over my head.

Those are cool Daizee.

I haven't built anything new since the Fugitive... maybe once I get caught up on the current crop of customs I need to take a couple days off and make something completely different. Lord Nose there are plenty of whacky ideas bouncing around in my noggin...

You and your family are in my thoughts, tfields. I hope they caught it in time.

daizee, that is a really cool find. Especially since it has personal value.

I have considered cutting up a couple old Hedge fence posts laying around here, just to see what is inside.

please write up a how-to when you build one yourself. It's not cost-effective to send chunks out. This particular wood is cool because in addition to the neat grain, it came from my mom's 100+y/o oak trees at the house where I grew up.
I sent two large flat rate boxes out to beyond wood products, still waiting and I didn't put a dent on my supply.I was so close in making a chamber out of a pickle jar and hand pump, got the vacuum upto 25 pounds and it held for 2 minutes then it slowly starts to fail... i added some weights to prevent scales from floating and one small tap and the jar popped... probably gonna try this http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-DIY-Vacuum-Chamber-and-Pump/

smoke & prayers heading up tfields.

as to weather - got another day off -- so i can do the 15 mile circuit of driveway clearing for a couple friends...
got another 5" last night for an official total of 13.5" -- which makes lots of sense to me, as we have 11" on the wide flats and 24"-30" in the low spots and drifts...

Something a lot more simple.. but still BIG. This cut out in cardboard feels good in hand

Jeebus. Are you sure you don't want to just make a sword instead??

He bought a big ol' chunk of steel and can't bear to make 2 or 3 knives that would actually be useful out of it. It's a Freudian thing.

:p

Jeebus.
Are you sure you don't want to just make a sword instead??

I thought about it a little but it would have to be a short sword, 24" OAL max. And id like a HUGE knife more than a short thin sword i think. So i decided i want a big knife. Right now i have some big blades, but every time i see a knife larger than one i have it makes me want a larger knife. With something like this i wont have to worry about anything bigger tempting me.

Really its just FUN. When i cut out a small knife im like "cool" when i cut something like this out i start giggling like a school girl. Im on a large knife binge right now, and i need something to end it HAHA
