My condolences on the loss of your cousin JD! Smoke and prayers for your family.

Your package also arrived here today! thread to follow! thanks again brother!

I did the shopping earlier.....$70 later....its going to be a fun new years

The wife got some Vodka, Tequila, and Maker's Mark. The Maker's Mark is for me. i dont drink clear liquor often.

Plan is to go to the brewery Friday and stock up on some of that awesome stout as well. Im regretting not ordering 2 growlers now. Im hoping they sell their own growlers. If not ill just buy some bottles to bring home with the Beckerhead growler as well.

Maker's Mark or Knob Creek ????

They're both pretty decent, but not really all they're cracked up to be IMO. I mean sure they're good, but don't believe the hype, either, or think you're getting something special because you're paying a few bucks more. All you're paying for is TV commercials and glossy magazine ads :)

After much deliberation and study, I've come to the conclusion that once you get above the absolute swill at $15 and until you get well into the $40+ range, there's really not that much difference in overall quality between any of the bourbon brands. So just stick with whatever tastes good to you and/or whatever's on sale. Especially if you're going to mix it with soda pop... at that point, who cares?

Once you get going on the 8, 10, 12-year and older bourbons, things start getting pretty interesting.

So my aunt and uncle lost there house x-mas night to a fire and now I woke up to several text messages to her son passing away last night. Not sure on how but everyone thinks it was an "OD".. I saw my cousin at our family Xmas party and I thought something seemed off with him... Man I feel so bad for my aunt.

Sorry to hear this JD

That's rough my friend, prayers headed out.

JT I would say I have similar experience. The right booze in the 40ish dollar range, and it becomes a struggle to find better until you start getting into the holy crap its how much ? range.
I have tried special reserve versions of many different brands and types and found them only marginally better if at all, than the regular versions, but drastically more expensive.

Some of my favorites.

Kettle One very nice, smooth and easliy sipable straight or on the rocks
Captain Morgans Dark Spiced Rum everyone should try it at least once, its pretty solid rum
The Macallan 12 year really really hard to beat for anything anywhere near the price
Makers Mark very solid performer fair price and nicely done. Its not astonishing but its got great bang for the buck and I enjoy drinking it
Believe it or not Crown Royal, not normally a blended Scotch or Whiskey or Burbon guy, but Crown is nice
Jose Cuervo makes an insane Family reserve thats soooooo smooth but its in the 100ish range for a bottle "Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo Tequila"
Bombay Saphire is generally my gin of choice
Thats most of my go to hard booze, all reasonable in price and very good for the money especially, at least to my taste. If any of you like Port Wine, Penefolds Tawny Port is outstanding and cheap as dirt.

Yup, same here. You just can never tell till you try 'em though... I thought regular Four Roses was frickin' gross, but the 4R single barrel Gus brought over last Christmastime was really nice.

Not sure exactly what it is about regular Crown Royal; I guess it's just a good balanced whiskey. I don't know any whiskey-drinker who turns their nose up at it, whether they're Scotch guys or bourbon guys or what. It's good stuff :)

Back on bourbons... if you're having trouble finding one you really like for smoothness and not being too sour without spending a ton, try you a couple "wheated" bourbons. They're still at least 51% corn mash and made/aged the same as other bourbons, but the wheat gives 'em a much softer feel and almost a sweetness, compared to mostly-corn mashes and especially ryes.

Fascinating topic to be sure... I'ma go have a sip or three and ponder on it some :p
