No sense at all. What's wrong with displaying a piece of my and my nation's heritage?

well, some heritage is good, and some is bad.

your fellow man typically decides what is what.

We've been using those, or something very similar. Worth every penny.

they're the shizznit for sure. also half the price of the kind with torx heads (although those have ceramic coatings)

True, but this heritage is good. That flag never hurt anyone. Very few that fought under it were fighting for the bad part of it.

unfortunately, it's probably not the symbol you think it is in the rest of the country.

things change. sometimes a lot.

Daiz is a computer geek....on a research boat. It seems like a really cool job. If you wanna see some of what he does, go here: http://www.nautiluslive.org/
My youngest and I were entranced by some of the videos last year when they were mapping the Puerto Rican Trench (might not have got that exactly right). Funny part is my dad's blood brother (childhood ritual stuff) used to captain the Atlantis II, the other research vessel out of Woods Hole and precursor to the Nautilus. If you've got kids, check out the live feed or some of the vids. REALLY cool.

Here's one:

Wow. Just wow. That has made my jaw slacken at how cool that footage is and how cool that job must be. Conversely, it has also made me think of how dull my life and job are :(

Hey, if someone wants to take it that way, um... well, they should study their history.

A "certain group" of people (if you catch my drift) often carried/carries the American flag, not so often a CSA battle flag. Is the American flag also a "symbol of hatred?"

My Irish ancestors were victims of a form of slavery under the seemingly innocent name "indentured servant." They were killed, beaten, and suffered just as much as slaves of any other race. The English did that to them, should the British flag be considered a symbol of hatred towards Irish people?

By no means am I condoning the hatred or persecution of any race, the Bible says we're all equals in God's eyes, that's all I need to see. Nor do I condone the actions of crazed men that persecute a specific race simply because they're different , but a flag is not, never was, and never will be the issue.

If we're geting too political here, by all means, delete.

Buddhist swastika.
Once a symbol of love and peace.

The thing that really sucks about the situation is if you take it away from those who see it as heritage then it becomes soley as a symbol of hatred and used only by those who choose to use it for hatred as those who use it as heritage are not allowed. Then you get into thought police territory when you start persecuting those who see any symbol as one thing and accuse them as another basing those accusations on a perceived notion that you or whoever think you know what's going on in their head.
I suppose you could try flying the rebel flag in a protest against racism and take it back from those who abuse its symbolism but I'm not sure you'd make it to the rally...esp against those who seek to gain from the publicity attached to such events...

The torx heads were about the same price up here so we ended up using them. Very similar design. And seriously effective.

To be fair, most Irish folks I know do feel the same way about the British flag and northern folks feel about the flag of the CSA.

NC is right. Better to try to keep it going as a symbol of heritage and have a few people look down on you for it rather than let it be used exclusively by those who would make it a symbol of hate.

“As for the South, it is enough to say that perhaps eighty per cent. of her armies were neither slave-holders, nor had the remotest interest in the institution. No other proof, however, is needed than the undeniable fact that at any period of the war from its beginning to near its close the South could have saved slavery by simply laying down its arms and returning to the Union.”
Major General John B. Gordon, from his book, Causes of the Civil War.

"So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained." Robert E. Lee

Whichever way you see it, there's a small one flying at the bottom of the driveway, you can come try taking it down if you'd like. Bring a bagged lunch.

I must have taken a wrong turn.
I thought this was the Snark thread...
My appologies.
