LMAO!!
Im not giving up on the grinder at all bud sorry. I started with just enough steel to make 2 knives, i wanted to do one with the grinder and 1 with files. Basically to just have a little idea whats involved with each. The one with files is coming out better but thats because mistakes come a lot slower with a file compared to the grinder. But i finished the bevels on the small knife in just a couple hours the same day i started it, the bevels on the knife im using files for has taken a few days... But thats also because once i get tired i stop and move on to something else and only do it when i have extra time that its quiet.
But at the same time i did the smaller ones profile with just files, a hacksaw and drills and that took most of a day filing the shape, i mean most of 24 hours as i didnt sleep a wink.... BUT i profiled out the larger on with the grinder in no time. The grinder really does make profiling things out much easier. I have no problems shaping the knife with the grinder. Its the bevels that give me a hard time.
But once the steel comes ill most likely be using almost all of it to just practice my grinding and get a better feel for it. I need to learn at what speed to take the knife across the belt and at what angle so i can learn to get decent bevels.
Ill also still use the file jig for a small section, so i can still do something late at night when everyone is sleeping. Ill be making the wife a kitchen knife, and want it to come out looking half decent so ill most likely be filing that one. I want to have an understanding and learn better technique with both grinding and hand tools.
I dont give up easily on anything if i like it. The grinder would have to blow up or something for me to just stop using it LOL
WW, it doesn't really matter what speed you do passes with, as long as it's consistent in speed and pressure. The more consistent you are, the better your bevels will come out.
