I may steal one of the old power wagon or deuce and a half clutch plates Dad has and go from there when I want to start up.

for a beginner forge, Atlas forges have a great reputation. If you want to build your own, their 30k burner kit is a good deal -- and you can use the one you buy as a template to make a second one for a larger forge.

Shit.

After a little bit of research, it looks like that guy is a BF member. And only a couple hours away.

Check craigslist too. I've seen some decent forge set ups and tools for good prices as people clear out space or get out of the hobby for whatever reason. There was one a few months back that I was incredibly tempted to pick up, but the money was a bit tight at the time and I'm in a 1bdr apartment.

I've been window shopping cl for quite some time. Trying to ignore the urge to sell knives and buy equipment.

You guys are a terrible influence..

We need a separate thread stickied.....or just rename the snark thread to "off topic general discussion, heavy emphasis on making your own knives"....no, that's too long. Maybe "BK&T DIY".....JK - I like that all these Beckerheads are so into it and such a bunch of do it yourself-ers. If not for this forum, I wouldn't have even thought of anything I've done so far, let alone had the resources and cheering on to get it done. You guys ARE a bad influence....but in a most excellent way.

I agree Mike, I would have never attempted to make my own knife if it wasn't for this forum and the people here. Seeing mod after mod that turned out great and other people making their own knives really made the thought of making my own knife into a plan for action and the carrying out of that plan. Then changing the plan because I didn't like the first plan or just plain messed up the first one. LOL.

Not to mention the people on this forum that have helped me along the way. Tips, tricks, materials and encouragement. Some of you even helped me without being directly involved. Just reading the discussion and debates on how to do things and what to use has been helpful even if it wasn't directed towards me.

Thanks everyone!

Jeremy

You are no exception, Jeremy. I really enjoy seeing the progress you make and post on the pen pal II thread.

Thanks buddy!

I made some progress today. I will add to that thread when my videos are done uploading.

Glad to see your ok.

Jeremy

Jeremy's gonna get a little surprise in appreciation for his patience and support. Whether that's enticing or frightening... well, there's only one way to find out. :D

You guys ARE a bad influence...

Don't blame me man, I'm just along for the ride ;)

In completely unrelated news, if that dang rascal Vik character continues on his hawk-forging journey... I foresee some horse-tradin' going down in the near future. Don't tell Miss Angie... what she don't know won't hurt me.

You 'n me both, James.
Actually, I recently learned that a good friend of my brother in law forges custom hawks. Many of his customers were local boys that were serving. I think it is time that I became acquainted with this friend.

Just picked up an old Western Bowie at a gun/knife show.
This one is pre-W49, so I think it was made between 66-77. (Or something like that...)
I've always wanted one and this one definitely has some character.

By most people's reckconning, this is the 2nd Western Bowie, from around 1965 to 1966. The first ones allegedly came out in 1964 and had the word "BOWIE" on the pile side, inverted ( letters upside down when the knife is held tip up).

By MY reckconning, it is the 4th version.
The first version is a rare, very early 1928-1930 (IMHO) version with cracked ice handles and finger grooves.

The second version is the Bx54 Bushman, produced during WW2 as part of the AAC survival packs, similar to the Collins #18 little machete and the Case XX Army contract clone of the #18. Western's Bx54 had a small, steel, oval guard as opposed to the large brass guard with quillons.

The 3rd version would be what most people call the 1st version (as described above).

I currently have identified 18 versions of "49" Bowies similar to yours, up through the Coleman era to the Camillus era. This list does NOT include "other" Western Bowies, such as the 46-8, 38, 39, 43, 44, 45, 47 or 55. I'm working on a "Western W49 Family Identification" thread, but my camera is screwed up and I need to buy a new one so I can finish it.

Classy.

Apple is the devil. Android all the way baby!

android is just another evil.

they cared so much they let nsa tap your data.

course, now, they're offering encryption moving forward, to keep up with apple :D

but you are still the product

I dont use either. No cell phone here. I win.

Android has this CRAZY app called airdroid. I have in on my computer, my wife has an android phone. I can connect to her phone from my computer, check her calls, messages, turn on either her front or rear camera and see whats around her, snap a picture with her camera, check the phones battery life, download her pictures, send a message as her from her phone... Pretty much anything she can do from her phone i can do from my computer all wireless.

Now before yall start to speculate, SHE is the one who told me about it and set it up... Because it makes sending her pictures to the computer easier. She can download them all at once without connecting it or worrying about file sizes, and if she ever loses her phone you can use the GPS and find its exact location, you can even ring the phone in case its lost in the house after the kids play with it and misplace it, even if the ringer is off you can turn it on...

She trust me, and i trust her so it doesnt get used except when she wants me to get some pictures off her phone or when we she cant find it. But we joke they should of named it the jealous husband or stalker app all the time.

Jerry, I just noticed the bottle opener in that pic, looks pretty cool, who makes it?

Im excited about a new bottle opener that may be coming to the market soon, Its not a multi-tool and doesnt have a blade on it, just a unique and awesome bottle opener. NOT FROM ME, and i had no hand in it, so its not my place to give any details about it... But i shall own one!!!

I'm intrigued.

Woody & Murph, that is my Kebo "one handed" bottle opener. I tend to hord the caps and it keeps their shape well. I have two of them. One is a lightweight aluminum one and that one is their larger original stainless steel one that I found for a steal in a little shop the wife drug me into.

Tim, my want list is so long I ran out of paper. Now I just look at it wistfully, with the full realization that I will be, uh, underfunded for the rest of my days, and thank whatever god I believe in that I have a 0560 in my pocket. I do really love that thing, even more so since I turned what ZT calls a "slicer" grind into an actual slicer grind. They are great knives, but thick steel and a 40° edge is NOT very good at slicing.

Yeah Mike after reading a ton of threads on it, I've found that between 28-36 degrees is where they shine as slicers. The 'super steel' they use can stand up to plenty of abuse when taken down really low. Truth be told I didn't really like the 0560 once I got it in the hand (to each their own right). Since getting the 0801 my desire for other folders has kinda tapered off. It makes me want to see how the 562 is in the hand before I even contemplate buying it.

As Jeremy mentioned being bit by the custom bug, I have been eying a few hand made knives myself :) I just need to get the savings up a little more.
