Yeah Mike after reading a ton of threads on it, I've found that between 28-36 degrees is where they shine as slicers. The 'super steel' they use can stand up to plenty of abuse when taken down really low. Truth be told I didn't really like the 0560 once I got it in the hand (to each their own right). Since getting the 0801 my desire for other folders has kinda tapered off. It makes me want to see how the 562 is in the hand before I even contemplate buying it.

As Jeremy mentioned being bit by the custom bug, I have been eying a few hand made knives myself :) I just need to get the savings up a little more.
I think if I'm gonna own a custom, imma hafta make it myself. As for the 0562, it's basically the same as the 0560 (exactly the same size and shape), AFAIK. Different scale. When I first got the 0560 I thought that it was way too big (I have medium size hands) and I couldn't open it easily as the detent is a little stiff. Thought I might sell it. But I have a hard time getting rid of things, and I got it for a great price, and I decided maybe I could get used to it. I'm glad I did. The edge geometry was the only thing I wasn't so happy with. Took me a while to work up the stones (literally and figuratively; that Elmax is some tough steel) but now I'm totally in love with it.

This is the reason why I want to hold it in my hand fist! I think the handle is slightly different and a bit thinner. I'm just wondering about the weight. With the 0560 I didn't like the way that the handle seemed so much lighter then the blade. If it turns out I don't like it ... that just saves more funds I can allocate to other tools :D

Shit.
After a little bit of research, it looks like that guy is a BF member. And only a couple hours away.

I have one, bought from the other site.
It's a great little forge for small stuff. It's what I do all my 1084 in now. I think I have the older burner, but I've heat-treated a 6" blade in there with good results (that's the absolute max!).

We need a separate thread stickied.....or just rename the snark thread to "off topic general discussion, heavy emphasis on making your own knives"....no, that's too long. Maybe "BK&T DIY".....JK - I like that all these Beckerheads are so into it and such a bunch

I love all the traffic in this subforum on the mod topics etc., but there is a very serious making section over yonder... This and that subfora had joint custody over me for the first two years. It's first rate.

Jerry, I just noticed the bottle opener in that pic, looks pretty cool, who makes it?

Im excited about a new bottle opener that may be coming to the market soon, Its not a multi-tool and doesnt have a blade on it, just a unique and awesome bottle opener. NOT FROM ME, and i had no hand in it, so its not my place to give any details about it... But i shall own one!!!

I already answered the first question up a few posts, but you will have to tell me about the new one now. I am a sucker for bottle openers, especially unique or antique ones.... Speaking of, I need to work on scrounging up one of 710's wreckers.

Catchin up on the snarkage. Jerry, glad that accident wasn't any worse that it was. And sure. I'll take the 10 bolt.

Yesterday was Sophies birthday, she turned one year old Oct. 4th. She's been a hand full but not compared to all the joy she has brought us. She got a new collar, and new ball, some chew treats and a,birthday biscuit that she swallered whole before we could get her pic. Lol.

Leo the can on the other hand, remains un amused...........

Also, doing some work at my buddies shop has its advantages. Since its pretty much a hot rod shop for semis theres always cool stuff laying around to drive including a small fleet of custom bikes. One of the owners decided to strap one on at our local Octoberfest and asked me to take his bike home. Said he was going to Chicago for a week the next morning so I could ride it all I wanted. So, behold my company vehicle for the week lol.

By most people's reckconning, this is the 2nd Western Bowie, from around 1965 to 1966. The first ones allegedly came out in 1964 and had the word "BOWIE" on the pile side, inverted ( letters upside down when the knife is held tip up).

By MY reckconning, it is the 4th version.
The first version is a rare, very early 1928-1930 (IMHO) version with cracked ice handles and finger grooves.

The second version is the Bx54 Bushman, produced during WW2 as part of the AAC survival packs, similar to the Collins #18 little machete and the Case XX Army contract clone of the #18. Western's Bx54 had a small, steel, oval guard as opposed to the large brass guard with quillons.

The 3rd version would be what most people call the 1st version (as described above).

I currently have identified 18 versions of "49" Bowies similar to yours, up through the Coleman era to the Camillus era. This list does NOT include "other" Western Bowies, such as the 46-8, 38, 39, 43, 44, 45, 47 or 55. I'm working on a "Western W49 Family Identification" thread, but my camera is screwed up and I need to buy a new one so I can finish it.

Thanks for the info ZZ!
I was actually going to contact you since I had noticed you had a lot of info on the Western Bowie's.
I'll be looking forward to your identification thread.

While we're on the subject, the brass guard has a slight rattle to it. Mostly side to side, not up and down. (When holding the knife tip up.)
Is there an effective way to try and tighten it up?
Any help and suggestions are welcomed! Lol

PM sent w/ Qs.

bf software is broken still i see :D

You're the computer genius....can't you fix that ;)?

What took you so long to get an SSD? They're already on, like, 7th generation controllers....when my desktop hdd crapped out a couple of years ago I bought a small one; even on a 9 year old Pentium D the performance boost was VERY noticeable. Of course, only my OS and programs run off it and the rest goes onto a pair of 1 TB hdd's setup in a RAID 1 config. MB is dying, tho, and I think my graphics card just $#!+ the bed. Time to build a new one......after I sell some stuff and raise the funds.

We did not catch a single thing. But it was a lovely day to just be lazy on the riverbank. Started out pretty foggy...

Looks, lime some nice scenery JT. You know what they say, the worst day of fishing is better than the best day working.

In other news, my hands are a hurtin. Could be cause im getting old. Or it could be because I just file worked a M-18. Hmmmmmmm,

I'm intrigued.

I can say they are being made by a BF member that most everyone here at least knows of...... And i can say its different than any bottle opener i have seen, but very cool the way it opens the bottles....... But thats about all i can say LMAO

Like i said i have no hand in it what so ever. If i did id tell more about it, but its not my place. Im sure the person making them will want to share them first and its only right to let him. But as soon as they are done ill have one and post pictures and more info.

Jerry that Kebo one is pretty cool!!

Was up late doing some filing. Been a busy few days with the wife and kids and doing some fall cleaning here throwing out a bunch of old junk... but this has limited how much time i have had to finish my knife so i tried doing as much as i can after the wife went to sleep last night, and she stayed up till 2am. SO i filed for a couple hours, then experimented with etching a knife with ferric chloride. Then i was so tired my eyes were closing up on me. Layed in my hammock to take a break and woke up 9 hours later.

Yesterday i was mixing up some seasoning. Lots of ground and crushed peppers, onion powder and garlic powder. No salt. But after i was done i cleaned the bottle off that i was filling with a paper towel. Stupidly i put the paper towel to the side instead of throwing it away. A bit later i used the same paper towel to blow my nose and got hot pepper dust in my eyes.... THAT SUCKED.

Happy b-day to Sophie!! They grow so fast!! Me and the wife were looking at a couple of Neko's puppy pics the other day and he was so little and fluffy. He turns 1 on thanksgiving day!! Gunna be giving him his own raw bird as a birthday/thanksgiving day feast. One of the guys on another forum makes the most awesome dog birthday cakes i have seen. But they look like they would take forever LMAO, and neko likes raw meat more than anything. So i think he will enjoy a full bird.

James looks like a beautiful area!!

Well.... i guess its time to get back to work. I wanted this thing done before the weekend was over.

In other news, my hands are a hurtin.

My Dad always said, "that's just the mean-ness coming out of ya". ;)

I truly love East TN better than any other place I've seen... and I grew up in north/central WI, which is pretty damn amazing in its own right if you like any kind of outdoor activities. You can hardly throw a rock around here without hitting a gorgeous lake, river, camping spot, hunting land, historical stuff, wildlife preserves, etc etc etc. That spot we were at today is only 30 minutes from my house, yet we live on the edge of a fully modern city with all the fun stuff that goes along with it, too. Our house is certainly not a mansion, but it's plenty comfortable and it's in a clean, safe, basically zero-crime neighborhood - the same kind of place up north would cost nearly twice as much. The laws here are very friendly to folks like us who want to work from home and grow gardens and collect rainwater and that sort of thing... did you know there are places that FINE people for collecting rainwater off their own damn roof? That's insane...

Plus, the weather is way, way WAY better than WI ;)

Hmmm... nevermind this knifemaking thing... maybe I should get a job working for the East TN Tourism Board or something :p

Maybe "BK&T DIY".....JK - I like that all these Beckerheads are so into it and such a bunch of do it yourself-ers. If not for this forum, I wouldn't have even thought of anything I've done so far, let alone had the resources and cheering on to get it done. You guys ARE a bad influence....but in a most excellent way.

I've stopped reading the Snark thread the past couple of weeks because it's turned into a knifemaking thread. Not that there's anything wrong with knifemaking, but granitestate is right. There's probably a better place for that discussion. If I constantly wanted to read/write about knifemaking, I'd head over to Shop Talk.

I'd be down for a Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread. It need not be stickied, but interest alone could keep it afloat.

I would be honored to host a knifemaking Q&A thread on my subforum and I would be willing to sticky that anyone would be welcome to chime in if it alleviated the stress here. Just throwing it out there. However, id still hope that the other craftsmen here on the Becker forum would still help me field some the questions. :o

modding - the gateway drug to making.....

I'll start one then. This snark thread certainly needs more snark.

Don't be scared of ShopTalk, guys and gals. Newbies are welcome. There's a huge, friendly resource of knowledge and experience there just begging to be tapped, and frankly ST could use some "new blood" in the form of reasonable questions coming from people who actually want to learn.

Dagnabbit, there you go making sense again. In all seriousness, that really is a fine idea

I'll help. I have lots of answers... whether or not they're actually correct remains to be seen, but I'll throw 'em out there if anyone thinks it might be useful. As they say, everyone's good for something, even if it's just a bad example :p

There's a Q&A sticky in my subforum already, but it's not really designed for people doing their own work; just for me to explain whatever it is that I do for whatever bizarre/magical reasons I do it.
