Snarkin' in the USA.....

I was looking at pumps, but I am not confidant that my wife could use one effectively in a home defense scenario. Semi auto is just point and pull the trigger. I already have a Remington 1187, but it needs work, and I was thinking that for the money I would spend to tune up my Remington I could buy a http://www.mossberg.com/product/shotguns-autoloading-930-special-purpose-spx-8-shot/85360 ready to go, out of the box. Pretty much any of the newer semi autos are pretty reliable now on feeding. I mean they are actually being issued for combat in military and Law enforcement applications instead of pumps now in many instances. I DO like that a pump is simpler and will feed pretty much anything, but as a home gun I think my wife might boggle the pumping, and she doesn't really want to practice enough to get comfortable with it. Shes not a gun girl. If Browning made a home defense A5 I would be thrilled. I like the recoil feed system.

I should have filled out my earlier question better.

Semi auto, home defense/shtf shotguns, are what I am looking at, and I am having a hard time deciding if I should spend heavy, or if say the Mossberg semi is as good as the Remi semi, is close enough to not justify the extra price on the Benelli or Browning, or FN semis.

Mossberg 930 is a very well-respected shotgun and would serve you well.

My vote goes to the Mossy or Remington 870. I've used both plenty here and in the sandbox. Great, solid and reliable shotguns.

I am looking at getting an 870. May be more money that the Mossberg 500 series, but worth it from what I can see.

This just looks like fun!!! Waiting on a couple other orders to finish so i can get it :)

I might end up getting the one with micarta scales though, they don't make the paracord wrapped ones anymore... They come up here and there on the exchange..

That is pretty sweet to be able to shave with your hawk.

My problem with Remington, is they have acted for a while now, like there is nothing new in the world of shotguns, instead of making innovations in their line. The 870 is essentially unchanged for what 100 years, and not because theres no way to improve it, but because they are fine with the status quo. I like that Benelli and even Mossberg keep trying to innovate, same with KelTek. I will Probably get a Mossy or a Franchi which is Benelli, They have a inertia drive model that has none of the flaws of a gas drive semi auto. Recoil or inertia drive is basically a pump shotty that pumps itself. my only beef is I will need to find someone who makes extended mag tubes that work for it, and I will put ghost ring sights on it, if I settle on the Franchi. For the price though the Mossberg SPX is hard to beat. I am gonna play with my Remington 1187 today and see if I feel any differently about it when I am done.

My staffy Luna with me everyday at the dropzone. She loves tennis balls.

Ya know what they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

very well said. Thorny, you asked people for there opinion.! if you already have your mind made up. don't ask for other peoples perspective! Fact is. Benelli, Browning, Remington, Mossberg, they all make a fine gun, or they wouldn't be making guns. What is your take?

Havent made up my mind Todd..lol Just looking to be convinced one way or another. As far as semi auto, I am pretty sure thats what I want, but maker and model, not really sure yet. After a few days of online research and question asking though, I am leaning towards the Mossberg SPX, but I may just get my Remington tuned up, I really cant decide. Knives You can get a feel for pretty easy once they are in hand. Guns have too many variables, its a much tougher choice imho. I do like the idea of a recoil system though, no gas ports to fail, and handles pretty much any shell power. I like hearing from other people who have used them, it helps me get a real feel for how good or bad one is.

Yeah, the 870 is what it is and there are not apologies for that. None needed, either, because its one of the most durable and reliable shotguns ever made. It can be super sloppy and still work flawlessly.

Remington also makes an 1100 tactical model that is one of the few semi autos with barrels that are in the 20-22" range, instead of 26-30", which is common for sporting models.

The reason I am looking at all, is because I have had feed problems with my Remington, and a part that supports the forend broke pretty early on and costs a bunch to repair because it requires almost complete disassemble of the gun.
Considering the fact that I bought the Police version which is supposed to be better made and more durable, I was very disappointed. I know lots of people swear by Remington, but do some digging and you find they fail as much or more than some other makers. The 887 nitromag for example, also the slam firing issues with some models of their semi autos. I know that the 870 is almost bullet proof, but I really prefer to not get a pump since one of the main reasons is for home defense and I am pretty sure my wife would screw up the pumping in a high stress situation. I realize that a double barrel or single barrel break open shotgun would work fine for this too with no pumping required and really no way for those to fail for the most part, but I want more ammo capacity. Anyway I do appreciate the feedback and input, even if some of it is contrary to the direction I think I am leaning. I havent landed on an answer yet, so even contrary points of view are more than welcome.

Whoever invented this Jack Daniels beverage is a fine gentleman indeed. A doff of my cap in their direction, wherever it may be.

I have an 870 for my wife. Not trying to be argumentative but she doesn't train much at all. I think she has shot 2 in our 10 years together. We keep the 870 chambered so all you do is flip the safety and fire. It pretty much pumps on recoil if she has ever shot it at all. A year or so back my wife got scared by me breaking into the house when I had told her I was not coming home that night. I heard her walking up stairs she had the 870 even though she didn't hear her phone the 5 times I tried to call her. I think its simpler than an auto for someone who doesn't shoot much. That's just my opinion and I respect yours.

Thanks Psy,

I might have to try and sweet talk the wife into trying a pump and seeing what she thinks. It would certainly make things easier. There are a million aftermarket parts and repair parts for the 870 and they are tough as nails, and pretty much fail proof. So I will see if I can get her to try one.

That stuff is everywhere. :D Too bad I can't make the gathering...I'd export a few cases. Maybe if I can swing the fall one. I'll have to get some Sprecher rootbeer for 710.

ticks are thick enough and interest low enough I'm cancelling the gathering next week.
I'll go play lumberjack instead.
OTOH, Sprecher soda is easy to get here -- SWMBO likes the cran-cherry version.

Thorny - not trying to throw you a curve ball but have you considered a 12ga coach gun. Side by side 12ga is about as simple and reliable as anything out there. Plus it's guaranteed to stop whatever you need it to. I've been giving this a lot of thought since you posted your question.
I've got a 14 yr old daughter & my wife to think about.
Both have practiced with my Mossberg but neither are really comfortable with it.
Just something to think about.

Well I have to say that it sounds like your wife simply needs more training. If she can't handle racking a shotgun then she'll probably fumble in other operations as well. A firearm is only as effective as the shooter.
