Snarkin' in the USA.....

Well I have to say that it sounds like your wife simply needs more training. If she can't handle racking a shotgun then she'll probably fumble in other operations as well. A firearm is only as effective as the shooter.

Here here! Again. Well said. I heard you mention "high stress" honestly, it takes years of training to be well suited for high stress situations. If she's not willing, or your not willing or able to put the time into it. Buy her a old sigle shot H&R . Can't really get any simpleir than that.

One other thing I'd like to mention since I haven't seen it mentioned. Racking the slide on a shotgun is one of the most widely recognized intimidating sounds in the world. If someone was to break in and that pump gets pumped, you're more than likely going to be cleaning up a brown mess instead of a red one. Autos/semi-autos don't have that intimidation factor.

I need to ask for some prayers guys. My brother works at a few dirt tracks and a car came through the fence and hit him. Sounds like he's in rough shape. He's being taken to a bigger city with a better hospital. I'm working but I'm turned around and headed to where he's going.

Racking a semi-auto shotgun makes a rather pants-filling sound too.
I'd avoid hammer guns for non-experts. De-cocking one on A live round is tricky for the unpracticed under stress.

Running a big new sonar overnight to see if we've got the kinks is worked out.

Intimidation cannot be counted on to stop an attacker and really shouldn't even come into play when choosing a weapon for defense. I've seen people make single shots work for defense, but reloading would probably take more practice than racking a pump gun.

Have you considered a carbine over a rifle? Training is still just as important but they have less recoil, higher capacity, and are quicker/easier to reload.

Prayers going up!

He on his way to Bismark? The hospital there is a good one. Smoke going up man! Hope he recovers and quickly.

Intimidation shouldn't be counted on as a sole means of defense, however it IS part of a larger defense. Rack the slide and a large percentage of people will drop a load and their plans. Those that don't stop, put a blast in them and they will.

Thanks for the prayers. I guess he ended up at the local hospital instead of Grand Forks like I was told. Last I heard he was going for a cats can. He has definite hip and back injuries. But I haven't heard how bad yet.

Ac - smoke & prayers are up.
I know it's tough not knowing exactly what's going on with your brother but try to focus on what you do know and get the family around when you can. Y'all will need to support each other & him when he's on the road to recovery.

I keep my gun fully loaded with a round already in the chamber for a number of reasons. If I announce my presence it will be in a loud and commanding voice telling the intruder that I am armed and that I am prepared to use lethal force if necessary.

Anyone who keeps a shotgun or is considering a shotgun for defense might want to read this article. Lot of good info here:

AC prayers sent for your Brother.

"I heard you mention "high stress" honestly, it takes years of training to be well suited for high stress situations. If she's not willing, or your not willing or able to put the time into it. Buy her a old single shot H&R . Can't really get any simpler than that."

That is a real good point Todd. I may just have to sit her down and explain why she really needs to take some time and train with me, since if I am not home, it falls to her to defend our family in a bad situation. If I was gone, or got hurt and something bad was going down, her previous reluctance to familiarize herself could turn out very badly for us. Think I am going to have a conversation with her about that. I don't expect to turn her into an operator, but she should be familiar enough that she can be instinctively as comfortable as a normal person can be under those circumstances, instead of being a panicked and fumbling mess.

That is a great article Bigghoss, thanks man.

Well I may just buy two guns ..lol one for home defensive purposes for the wife, and one that I want.
There is the Rossi 5 or 6 shot 410 revolver shotgun that is a carbine. no pumping, no gas system or feed mechanism to fail. Just a simple revolver that throws spray.
I am thinking that this thing with a light mounted might be good for her. Simple, light, compact, and while not a 12 gauge, 410 is still a shotgun, and she could certainly manage that recoil way easier than a 12 gauge.
Thanks a ton so far for all the input guys. Really good points made, and it has made me consider things that I hadn't thought of in my sizing up of what to get.

Check out the CZ712 Defense. I completely forgot about their shotgun line until I was running trap yesterday. And a guy was using a 912 that had a great feel to it and was noticeably lighter than my Benelli Nova. I would have her shoot the Rossi before you buy one. I got to use one last summer and it was not a pleasurable experience.

AC, I'm praying for your brother. I hope you get to see him soon and that his recovery is fast.

Hey guys, hope all is well in your neck of the woods, gonna be in the 100° plus this coming week and gonna be 111° on Monday! I gotta make a ton of things so you all won't hear from me, I might just pop in to check out my shirt thread to get a count. As of right now there are about 26. Lets get more shirts made! I will probably get a few extra made just incase others want one but they will be limited.

I will contacting everyone who is posting on my shirt thread soon, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1083541-Beckerhead-shirt-size-poll-and-quanity

best tool ever :)

Gotta get me one of those. I've got an old maul that I should retire. It's probably at least 30 & maybe closer to 50 yrs old. Still does a good job but I'd like to try the Fiskars.

their splitting AXE is a bare over 2.5 lbs. it's light and nimble, and you can go farther with it, with lighter wood...

but even 2 foot wide logs? the big guy (i have the standard handle but older more war axe like design 4ish lb head) EXPLODES logs. it's lovely.

don't have the new, SUPER long handle mode. yet. it's $50-60? sometime. i expect the extra leverage/moment-arm to be awesome. it's more tiring, but man, me and a friend were both splitting the logs about as fast as the tree guys could deliver them, and THEY were impressed. all of them said they were buying one.
