Snarking at the speed of sludge...

Okay, I just gotta make a comment about something I saw in another area here.

Ref a knife for sale... One guy notes that the seller is in RI and asks "where are you in RI" or words to that effect, with a comment "... so the drive isn't too bad."

I'm sorry, but any drive from anywhere to anywhere in RI (or anywhere else in New England area, for that matter) is never gonna be "too bad". From Newport in the "south of RI) to the furthest away town in RI would have to be less than 45 miles.

I gotta drive 17 miles one-way just to get to a grocery store and 26 miles to a hardware store/lumber yard of any consequence.

I'm reminded of when I lived in RI for 6 months back in 1986. I was shooting archery practice at the Tiverton R&G Club with some locals and they were debating whether to go to the tournament in Warwick Saturday morning or to the one in Fall River, MA Saturday afternoon because it was going to be 26 miles to Warwick and "only" 20 to Fall River.

When they asked me which one I was going to shoot at, I told them "Both."

They were astonished that I would even consider "driving that far". (26 miles Newport to Warwick, 26 to Fall River and then 20 back down to Newport, for a total of 72 miles.

I then advised them that Texas Field Archery Association rules REQUIRED a minimum of 150 miles between tournaments held on the same day. I said to them that that was why I could beat their socks off shooting fingers, pins and a short, 12" stabilizer while they were using telescopic sights, releases and 36 inch stabilizers - I was willing to practice more and shoot more tournaments.

There was a 25 y.o. woman I met at church there that had never even been off the island (Aquidneck) that Newport is on because she had had chicken pox when her 3rd grade class took the mandatory field trip to the state capitol building in Providence. She'd even gone to college on the island at some women's college. She damn near had a cow when I took her all the way to Boston for dinner and a movie. Her comment after we went across the bridge at the north end of the island and I said, "Well, you're in Massachusetts. What do you think?" and her reply was "It looks just like RI."

Its funny my wife complains its far if its 10 miles here. Where i grew up it was 25 miles to the city and i did at least that everyday. Then i got another job and worked 55 miles away... Hell at one point when i worked in Texas i was driving 76 miles one way to work. I was filing up every other day then. So its funny to hear people say 10 miles is a far drive.

Granted it takes just as long or longer to go 10 miles here as it took to go 25 miles there LOL.... Even if traffic isnt bad, which is rare, you still have stop signs and red lights all over the place. You're stopping more than you're going it seems a lot of times.

most recent job is 59 miles one way.

tain't nothing.

it's the TIME...

but even then, i know folx who drive (or train) 3 hours one way, and they like it... mmm

personally, i put up with it for the 6 months. so. sure. now, freedom.

i just hope i'm not too free.

That's great! Good luck.
Rogue hoes!-- A fan of Wranglerstar, I surmise.

ayup. i love me some heritage tools.

the adze is on back order...

the hoe is grand (a LITTLE off kilter, that's fine, i'll beat it to death or try)

the super rake should be lovely for the woods and driveway

needful things, these tools

sharp too!

I try to be as close as possible to work so I don't have to waste time commuting. However, driving a couple hours to go do something is no big deal. I've driven 18 hours straight many times and once spent 38 hours in the cab of my s10 getting from Walla Walla, WA to Kansas City. After that the 9-hour drive home to Colorado was no big deal.

I used to have about a 45min commute. In traffic... It would take an hour and a half :(. Now I live 5 miles from work :D

I have cut my commute time considerably by putting a coffee pot in the shop. :D

Rhode island is a weird place. There are locals who never leave. I commute Across the state to work - 17 miles. It takes 35min.

Growing up, we lived in the country about an hour south of St. Louis, so a one hour drive anywhere was no big deal. Of course driving an hour would get you a minimum of 40 miles away from home, if not more.

My commute when I'm back home in central Texas is 40 miles, and takes about 45 minutes.

To get from central (not east!) Texas to El Paso for the work I'm doing now, I drove a little over 600 miles (9 hours). If you did that in New England, you'd probably go through 8 or more states depending on your route...

LOL, my commute is about one step into the garage from my house.

I thought about putting a piss bucket in the corner of my basement. Then i could avoid going up 2 flights of stairs to piss. Id barely have to walk at all then HAHA

Id take a longer commute for a better paycheck though, the pay is CRAP for the "job" im working now :D

I've been thinking about getting one of them step timers too see how much walking I really do when I'm making stuff... I'm constantly sweating and sore.. LOL

I can coast to the outer edge of Boston in an easy hour but going IN that last 5-10 miles can take easily 50% more time. Worth it for this one last job. No more.

I've been in Texas almost 30 yrs now. About 20 yrs ago a business associate flew in from New York and after living in New York City all his life proceded to tell me and others at dinner how Texas was so backward because there was no public transportation and we 'needed' to 'invest' in public rail and blah, blah, blah. He went on an on about how 'stupid and uncivilized we were and that Texas would have a hard time making it in the 'new' economic reality that demanded public transportation and if cars were needed they must be more fuel efficient. Ya'll know the drill.

After a week here and seeing how far apart things are he had an awakening. Haha...dumba**. I've found since then that there are a lot more where he came from that think the same thing.

710 - Uh, ya buddy...
Let's leave that sort of thing over in Pirate's Cove or wherever. :D SNARK!

I was gonna say... the most I travel one-way in a typical day's work is about 40 yards from the back shed to the mailbox out front... and I like it that way.

I do get a lot of stair-climbing exercise though... no bathroom in the shop and Ang won't let me have a fridge or 'puter down there. She's afraid I'd never come back in the house...

A Maine farmer is visiting a ranch in Texas. The Texan says to the Mainer: "My property is so large I could drive all morning to the east and not get to the edge of it. I could drive 2 hours to the north, 3 hours to the south and west and just get to the edge of it. Just."

The Mainer looks at him and says "Yep. I used ta hahve a truck like thaht."

So tomorrow for work I get to go 180 miles one-way, do the job and drive the 180 miles back. Two fill-ups in one day. It's like the exact opposite of the Move Your Butt thread.....
