Snarking at the speed of sludge...

This morning I decided to turn off the alarm and sleep through my workout this morning. God forbid I get to sleep as my 4 year old decided to move into bed with us at 0530. In order to keep him from waking up my wife... I gave him my spot in bed and decided to get dressed to go get a quick few Zzz's in my recliner. Little guy comes down 10min later and demands breakfast lol there goes those plans!

Does anybody have any good tips about sharpening fabric scissors? My wife handed me hers the other day and asked me to sharpen them. They cut at the first inch of the blades, can't cut a thing in the middle 3 inches, and still cuts at the last 1 inch. Every post I read said the same thing, its a simple chisel grind. So last night I sharpened them crazy sharp. I was slicing newsprint with them when they are apart (like I would after sharpening a knife), but as soon as I put them back together again; they now didn't cut fabric at all! Any ideas of what I could be doing wrong? My ocd of it being sharp but not cutting is going to drive me nuts!!

Lot of videos on youtube of how to do it. The only thing I can think of is that I noticed scissors usually have a "toothy" edge to them which would grab the material and hold it instead of pushing it out. So if you put a really smooth edge on them that might be it. Try sharpening them again but stick to a lower grit stone.

I've been using my 400 grit bench stone :( I'll try busting out some 180 or 200 grit paper

How is that legal? Not busting your chops or anything. It's just that I was told by an auditor from the Department of Labor, about a year ago, that all non-salaried employees had to be paid time and a half for every minute they work over 40 hours. I guess I'm just curious about the exception to that rule/law.

i get paid straight time, for how many hours i work, be they 20, 40, 80, 160...

1.5 time would be great. 2.5 time would be super awesome

course, it sucks that the gov takes their cut of your life, if you choose to work harder, they should cap taxes on a 40/hr-week/2000-hr-year kinda system.

if you choose to work 4000 hours, those extra hours should be YOURS for the effort. america would also own the world, because, we like hard work (and money)

I'm a civil service employee, and most of the positions in my organization are DOL exempt. The WG (wage grade) employees are on DOL rules, but the GS (general schedule) are exempt. For whatever reason, we are treated like salaried employees as far as DOL, but paid hourly based on our salary divided by the standard Federal work year (2,087 hours).

So I get paid strait time like Bladite, which is better than saying "you're on salary, so just keep working for no extra pay". They do pay extra for Holiday pay if you work a holiday (2X), Sunday pay (1.25X), and night differential from 1800-0600 (1.1X). There is some sort of federal law that they can't pay us more than a GS-15, step 10, so that is where pay caps and we work for free. I have to admit, that's pretty good money and I do try to minimize my hours once I cap.

Edit: I don't think I've ever worked a job where DOL applied. When I was a teenager, I worked at Six Flags over Mid-America (outside of St. Louis) and we were "seasonal", so it didn't apply. They paid us 20 cents under minimum (I think it was $1.90 when I started...). Then went into the Army after college, and a lot of rules don't apply to Uncle Sam. Worked as a contractor (Sr. Systems Engineer) right after retirement and was exempt (technicians and maintenance were covered by DOL). And finally my current exempt job.

BTW, GSOM, I have your skyline folder still here - life went sideways and I forgot about it momentarily. It's now in plain sight to be shipped shortly.

I guess it helps that when I get pissed off I can go and cut a motorcycle up in three pieces. Beats the shit out of therapy.

That does it. I'm buying a blowtorch.

Do not ask me anything important today. I"m high on Mucinex and can't think straight.

(yeah yeah... "how is that different from any other day", ho ho )

Everybody get out your asbestos underoos the biscuit is getting a blowtorch! So watch yet assets.:D

Bladite, GSM - Thanks for enlightening me. I've never had a job, other than salaried management, that didn't pay time and a half for everything over 40. Just doesn't seem right but if you're alright with it I guess I am too.

and as soon as the paper work settles, i've accepted one of three jobs...

see if you can do one and get paid for all three.
much better strategy than mine, which is do 3 and get paid for 1.

New Kershaw Camber arrived today. Pretty good stuff. Specs are a lie. It's not a 3" blade. It's 3.125" all day long. I've got an app for that.

Dang rain is making it a bit difficult to load firewood into the truck, haha.

On a side note, I need some ideas about what I want for my birthday, and Christmas. ;) Sad when I have to ask, I know.

blade(s) may be bent/curved so the middle section isn't contacting well.

Never tried sharpening scissors before. Never owned any that were decent enough to even consider it though. I had a new pair at work that I had managed to finangle from supply but those got pinched the first day I was out of the office. Buncha vultures out there I tell ya.

Picked up a French WWII military canteen today at a flea market. Any ideas for cleaning the inside? It's Aluminum with a bakelite cap.

Dynamite.

(Or maybe denture cleaners dropped in with some water.)

Maybe a bottle brush or a fish tank cleaning brush to get past the small opening.

This seems to be the case. I hit it with a marker and started to reprofile the edge completely and the first signs of ware were in a U shape in the middle of the blade. I'm going finish them tonight after the kids go to bed if I'm still awake :D

So once again a Becker knife 'saves the day' so to speak. We had a contest at work with pumpkin carving. Because I work in a food services warehouse, the winner would get lunch cooked for the entire department by one of the corporate chefs. My boss started getting everything ready and working on the concept when he came to a little problem. To put the final touches on it they needed (surprise) a knife. One of the other guys at work bulled out his CS voyager small, but it was too small. Blade wouldn't even get all the way through the thick skin. So my boss comes by and gives me this mischievous look and asks 'May I borrow one of your large knives' lol. Walked over to my EDC bag and handed him the BK15, he starts chuckling and walks away. Comes back later and hands it to me with a big smile on his face.

I went by our HR department on my way out; they made a pretty cool jack o' lantern of a big pumpkin eating multiple little pumpkins.

Sounds like a great opportunity for a T-shirt cannon rampage.
