SNG rant

Sorry dude, but get yourself a Blackberry and respond to Customers! I'm an attorney, and if I blow people off like this I get sued for malpractice. It's just bad business in this day and age. *shrugs*

I dont know how much a blackberry costs in USA but I can tell you that here they are ridiculous expensive and though I like one it costs way to much! Many people do not like technology an keep to the minimum. I see many of our makers carry plain phones that just call and text. I can understand that if someone is at SHOT and it is a small company (i.e two people or maybe 3) that one cannot check emails that often. I know that for you being an attorney it is important, but not in all aspects of life is it equally important. Just my opinion.

I however feel you on the knife and think it sucks you are not satisfied with it.

This is what happens when people buy into hype. I agree the SNG is overpriced (as are A LOT of other popular knives out there), but if you did some research before dropping $500 on the knife you would know they aren't for everyone and take lots of time to smooth out. But hey, some people buy into hype and think the SNG is the perfect knife when it's really just an overpriced overbuilt rugged folder. I personally love mine.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Sng.
It's too bad because I have one and, although it started off kind of stiff, it did break in nicely. It was nowhere near as stiff as yours. Two hands to open it?!?!? Not good.

The Sng design is still one of my favorites. Mine had very good F&F right from the get-go. I had read the horror stories and was prepared for what ever I got.I paid my money and took my chance. I really didn't care for it that much at first, but the more I used it, the better i liked it.Too bad Strider let yours get out the door.

I'm not sure why some people say that the Sng is slow to open. When properly adjusted, (unlike yours), the Sng is lightning quick to deploy. For a hole opener, it is excellent.

Although you shouldn't have to, I would send it in to them and let them fix it. You wouldn't want to miss out on what many users condsider one of the best designed folders ever made. Hey, if you still hate it, you can sell it later.

I had a SNG NM it was the worst knife I ever owned, now a proud new owner uses it for pictures with high dollar watches...the moral of the story for me was there is nothing a SNG or SMF Strider can do that a Boker AK101 for 70 bucks or a CS Spartan for 65 can't do.

I paid $505 for a new Strider SNG that I got on January 8.

Let me say that I really want to like this knife. It's ergonomic, extremely well balanced and the materials and handle are top notch. That being said, the folding action sucks out of the box.

OK, I knew going into this I would need to "break in" the knife. Two weeks later and approximately 1500+ cycles later, the folding action is worse than the day I got it. Now admittedly, I may not have done the "break in " process correctly (I used Eezox on the pivot to smooth it out), but the knife comes with no instructions (I got a sweet ziploc bag though) and Strider's website is devoid of any information on "break in" or even maintenance. I emailed Strider's customer support on Monday, still no response. Outstanding.

Put me in the camp that thinks when you pay $500+, the folding action should be smooth from the factory. There is simply no excuse for anything less IMO. I own a Sebenza 21 and an Umnum and they were buttery smooth from the factory. Further, the SNG is a tactical knife, and yet deployment speed is far far far worse than my Sebenza two weeks into this hellish break in process. Suppose I was being sent to Afghanistan, should the Army give me a month or two to break in my $500 tactical knife? To make matters worse, you are not supposed to field strip the knife ( I learned this supposed fact on and unofficial internet FAQ). what the hell?

I'll keep the knife, and I'm sure if I keep cycling it 500 times a day, it should smooth out so that I can thumb flick it some day. Of course i'll probably need a new lock bar by then lol.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice knife, but worth $500 as it comes from the factory? IMO, hell no.

You need to Call CS @ 1-760-471-8275 and let them know about what's going on, they will ask you to send the knife in and they will take care of it.

I have 3 SmF's and all 3 of them are smooth as glass with excellent fit and finish. ;)

The more I use knives, read the forums, etc., the more convinced I am that certain brands use hype to justify their lofty prices. When the owners of the company are "ex-special forces operators" or "martial arts fighters", suddenly the knives are two to three times the cost of a comparable knife from another company.

Strider knives has a lot of fans, and a lot of guys who suck up to them also. That's the way of the world, I guess. Personally, I have resisted the temptation to buy Strider, and I'm glad I did.

Maybe the OP got a lemon, maybe not. I have seen and held just about every Strider folder, and was tempted but did not pull the trigger.

May I recommend the following knives, with much lower price tags and super high quality?

ZT301--around $230. Titanium frame lock, G10 scales and S30V steel. Assisted opening.

Mantis Knives Folding Pry Bar--that's right, folks. Don't believe the negative press you may have heard. The Mantis Folding Pry Bar knife sells for about $110 and is a solid beast of a 4" blade. G10 scales, 154CM steel, liner lock, tanto tip.

Mantis Knives Chaos Folder--Some people don't like the "industrial" look of this knife, but it is said to be a true beast. G10 scales, s30v steel, titanium liner lock. Sells for around $180. I dont have one, but it's on the way.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley--This folder may look like a gentleman's knife, but it is hard core. Sells for around $150, I think? Spyderco also has many other good, hard use knives.

Bottom line, there are a lot of really good, hard use knives out there, for under $250. Some of the others justify high price because of a lot of hype.

I have both a ZT 0301 and Strider SmF's (3). The ZT 0301 is a great knife, but I like the feel of the Striders better.

Interesting..... I didn't know that you liked Strider ;)

FWIW, I have had both and I like the ZT better.

Now on the the OP.... I feel your pain. I have had Strider issues in the past too.

Finally, I have a question for the group: I have been working under the assumption that the CC and GG Striders were a little better in the F&F department and have been wanting to get a SnG CC. Is this generally the case, or, no?

Yeah I like Striders.

Here are a few of my SmF CC SW, excellent F&F.

Is it possible that repeatedly opening and closing the knife ratchets the pivot tighter? I could swear the spanner tool side of the pivot has rotated based on the location of the notches for the tool.

ding ding ding!!!!

Rotate the pivot with your fingers to "fine tune" your action.

No need for tools, just pinch both side of the pivot with your forefinger and thumb and twist the whole pivot a few degrees. Play with this twisting untill you get you smooth action your looking for.

Sounds funny but it will work, also your SnG will be one of your favorite knives once you get her broke in. It will never be a Sebenza... but then again you did t buy it thinking it was a Sebenza :)

I currently own 4 Striders and my PT is my current carry knife. Yes these knives are not super smooth, but I have not had the issues with opening that alot of owners report. Are they as smooth as my Sebenza? No, but my Sebenza is not as smooth as my Dozier. Now if it is taking both hands to open your Strider then there is a problem. Should you have these kind of issues with a $500 knife? Nope. But you should not have issues with a expensive firearm, computer, automobile, etc. but it does happen. My PT had to have serious sharpening right out of the box. The end of the blade had no edge at all. Is it poor QC? Probably, but sadly this is the norm for anything one buys any more. I think it is a lack of pride that people have for the job they do. As for Striders in general, they are hard use knives and I personally do not expect them to have the fit and finish of a "nicer" knife. I also feel that they are overpriced. But so is everything else these days. Hope you resolve your issue.

Once again, a Strider thread circles the drain, turning into just one more exercise in strained loyalties. How many who answered here really read the original post? How many read the whole thread before answering?

I did and told him exactly what to do and gave him the Phone # and even quoted his OP.

You did, and giving him him the phone number was probably the only advice here that will do him any good.

I know, he will have to call Heather and then send it in. :)

When he gets it back it will be slicker than walking on wet ice. LOL :D

The Sng's rigidity reminds me of a tuning fork. It's freaking amazing, IMO. It makes the umnum feel like a pig in the way it handles.
I can't believe you said that about the Umnumzaan, or any CRK for that matter. What is wrong with you?!?

(Sob)....it's true though...:D
