SNG rant

buy a hinderer i've had the same problem i've had several smf, sng,gb,and customs striders and some open like butter and others you have to tinker with them all the time infact my custom smf you have to loosen the third bolt near the pivot to open half ass like i said i've got a sng and a gb that is smooth as butter i take them apart and clean and oil them i noticed that if you carry them in your pocket very small particles of dirt get in between the brass washers so i pull the blades out and clean/oil them also as said above adjust the pivot will work sometimes i also have two 300 zt series i love them and they feel great and solid but are heavy i've got a extrema ratio rao comming but looks to be very heavy too! so the answer is a hinderer xm-18, cures all problems and now is my favorite knife (still love the looks of the striders)

A $500 knife should never have these problems, ever, when brand new. Unfortunately, sheer quality of product isn't what drives up demand in many cases. There are many products that are very high quality, but either the supply is capable of satisfying the demand, or the product itself isn't highly sought after. In a business sense, Strider has been able to maintain their pricing through means other than outstanding quality control. Their products are full of character, have quality materials, good designs, and loads of testosterone. They achieve a high product demand by maintaining the image and not oversupplying the marketplace. They have chosen not to take the quality level to the 99.9% degree of perfection. If that is your value point, I don't think you'll be satisfied with Striders.

Several have mentioned it previously, but with SHOT going on this week in Vegas, no one is getting much service. CR has a knife of mine and they've been black for about a week now too. I'd withhold judgement until the show is over and everyone settles back into the routine.

It sounds like it was tightened before being shipped out. Perhaps send an email out to the place you got it. They might be able to answer that question for you. As for your point about a knife should be ready to ship to Afganistan right out of the box...I totally disagree. All tools that are used in extreme conditions should be tested by the user IMO. Mistakes happen, and I think every tool should be used under normal situations. A break in period can be a great way to get a good handle on your knife and how it functions.

I havent owned a strider, but it sucks to hear about so many negative things about such a costly blade :(

Got a brand new Buck Mayo TNT 172 shipped to my door for $171.00, it was smooth as butter first time I opened it, fit and finish was better than many $300.00+ folders I've owned and lock is rock solid and premature or early. In short best knife I've got straight out of the box and was sub $200.

This knife has totally changed my thought process about what a good folding knife should cost and what its worth to me, that and stories like this. If this one breaks because its not as thick as a brick, while I'm on a dangerous black op with the wife and children at the soccer field or local grocery store. I can buy another one and still have money left over.

There are way to many knives available that can be bought for much less that will be so much better out of the box its not worth it, send it back and buy yourself something else. That thing has turned into a $500.00 stress ball and has cost you more time venting than its worth.

never had brand new Striders, all were bought used and not tight at all.
If I were you I'd unscrew pivot, and lubed it. No special tool is needed - just big flat screwdriver (or coin) for one side and hex wrench for another.

Remember not everyone who complains really owns or has owned a Strider. ;)

If they really had that many issues the Strider Forum over on USN would be full of people burning it down with posts complaining as there is a link to it right on their Website....... It's not so take that for what you will. :)

I always tell people to read the FAQ before they buy one as there is a break in period. ;)

Striders are basically custom knives that are hand fitted, they are not legos that you can swap parts from one to another like production knives are.

The Buck/Mayo TNT puts many more expensive folders to shame. It is, without a doubt, one of the smoothest folders out of the box, that I've ever bought, fantastic F&F too. I have the CF version and it is the lightest thinnest 3+" folder I have. However, it is no substitute for the Sng design. Like Seb's and 'zaans, it "handles like a pig "compared to an Sng. Well, not quite that bad, but still works like a straight handle, old school design.

There is a reason why so many people love the Spyderco Para. It has superb ergos and handles very well. The Sng is simply a Para on steroids. There just arent that many knives designed like these.

I really think the OP should try to resolve the issue he has before giving up on the knife.

Or, get an XM-18 and be done with it.

The forum (and its Members) you refer to has a long proven history of intolerance and disrespect to those daring to say anything other than words of praise for their leader. If the OP would have posted in that forum he would have received asanine replies to the effect of;

OP
"I spent $500 and the Pivot is incredibly tight"

Replies
"Feel lucky Bro - I've wanted one of those and would never complain"
"That's the way we likes em" followed by the head bobbing hair throwing icon
"Quit yer bitchin - Mick will make it right"
"Strider don't make no pretty folders, if you want nice get somethin else"

and other such dribble.

Ongoing Poor fit on an expensive knife (this same thing or similiar problems has been heard for years) - excuses are like.... well you know. ;)

Perhaps.... But that's no different than any other knife forum that has a fan base, there will always be a few of those types except for the Busse Forum here on BF, that is a 1st class forum in every way.

Then Josh (Strider employee) would post to call and send it in. ;)

The F&F and QC has gotten a lot better over the past few years, they do listen to their customers and they do care. :)

Believe me Strider knows that when their customers are dropping $500+ a pop on their knives that they need to listen to their concerns if they have any. ;)

When I spend $500 on a blade I expect it to be right, if it's not I would be on the phone ASAP with CS to send it in. ;)

I bought the knife from the monkey depot. I emailed the owner a few days ago and still no response. I guess he's living it up in Vegas too. I am definitley beyond their 7 day return policy and the knife has been used to cut open some boxes and has likely been cycled close to 2000 times. In short, i'd be shocked but pleasantly surprised if he exchanges the knife at this point.

I have no problem sending the knife in to strider if I could get the knife back within a week or two. But it sounds like some people wait months to get their knives back.

Like I said, the design of the knife
is fantastic. But this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. Btw the FAQ on Striders website is a dead link. There is no info whatsoever about break in or maintenance. That is just lazy, bad business practice IMO. I refuse to do repeat business with companies like this, no matter how good the product. In that respect I will say CRK blows strider away (product info).

They are pretty fast when it comes to small adjustments like yours should need.

It's when there is a major problem like replacement parts that have to be made etc that it will take longer.

Just call the shop and arrange it. :)

FAQ are here: http://carjackedracing.com/strider_knives_unofficial_faq_index.htm

Did you try my "fix?"

I have two Kershaws that where sent in For Warranty a few weeks ago, I never heard back form them yet, I guess they are living it up in Vegas as well. "But I knew SHOT was about to kick off when I went them in"

That will make a difference in blade movement. :)

Yes, twisting the whole pivot with your fingers directly affects the action of the SnG. I'm not talking about spanners and allen wrenches... Just simply grab both side of the pivot with your fingers and spin it a little at a time, this will fine tune your SnG's opening action, not sure why it does... but it does

"Fine tune" your SnG's action untill it does not feel too tight or too loose.

I do that on my SmF's if I need to adjust them. :)

It doesn't effect the lockup or cause blade play etc, it just effects how the blade opens and closes.

I just spoke to someone at Strider. She said send the knife in and include $15for return shipping. So I'm out another 30 or so bucks on a new $500 knife.

I'll report back when I get the knife back. Hopefully, I will still be alive. Maybe my 5 year old son will be able to end this thread some day. lol.

Seriously though, given my vast 3 week experience with Strider, I am not too optimistic about this whole process. The kicker would be if I got the knife back with the same problem or some new problem like excessive blade play.

It will be right when you get it back. :)

It won't take that long either. :D
