So I broke my Rat Daddy

Scrap yard replaced a dogfather for me a few years back. Sorry to hear about your situation.

I had a Rat daddy LE and it was easily my favorite big bowie I ever owned. Thats a tough blade to replace.

I'm surprised you managed to break a dog father....that's one thick piece of s7 steel! When it was first introduced they showed it bending to 180 degrees without breaking. How did it break exactly?

There is no product on the market that can't be broken or, as rare as it may be in some, suffer a manufacturing fault.

Why can't they keep some stock materials on hand? Maybe just rent a storage unit, it's not a big bulky product or anything. Isn't that what companies like TOPS and others do when they offer a lifetime warranty? These Bussekin knives rarely break, so it shouldn't take a huge volume; heck, I would think you could easily keep enough blanks in storage to last for years, or hold back some finished blades for warranty purposes.

I would think just because of the capital that would be tied up. A lot of companies will sell excess product for less than they paid just to recoup something from it. Just the steel alone is valuable, but then you're cutting down to blanks, there's labor, there's heat treat, and thats not even counting the special (and expensive) Busse Whiskey Quench. Most businesses just don't have the margins to be sitting on product that could have been sold or build too many extras for things happening to them 5+ years later. That money is earmarked for assembly upgrades, or more labor or next product run, or to lower cost for service members, etc etc.

Did you see that the Ratweiler CG was just announced??? Might be able to get one of those. Have you finalized your claim yet? That seems it would be a pretty fair replacement (the 1/4" thick version).

PS - Choppy for $500+???  Maybe on the bay, but definitely not here. I've seen them go on the X recently for ~$375 shipped/insured. ;)

SpyderPhreak, I haven't gotten my Busse email on it yet, but I saw the forum post! And yep that will be exactly the ticket. I didn't expect them to do a new -weiler run just for my replacement!! But I'll take it!! And yeah I just use quick bay prices. I forgot the huge price differential between these forums and Bay.

you could always see if the custom shop could grind a recurve into it, make it a custom piece. Really sorry for that, really sucks

As Tommy Boy says "I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it."

Well, it looks like the butcher's word is good. Makes me a heck of a lot more comfortable with my recent first Busse purchase. (Definitely moreso than a recent communication with the owner of another knife company, one I believe Mr. Busse referenced in his post here.)

So after following this thread with baited breath for a solution I am totally let down. Not let down by Jerry or Swamprat or Busse!

I want to know what the solution was!!! What did you get as a replacement?? I'm probably going to hear that it is a private matter between Jerry and adrock1978. Glad it got worked out, but come on, what was the ultimate solution?? Why wasn't Dan involved here??

Ok, I will go crawl back into my hole now.

Its not a private matter between Jerry and myself. I'm confident every Busse customer would get the same treatment. Each warranty situation is unique and as such Busse will do whatever they can to be fair and make the customer whole. I think the greatest reward in all of this, was talking one on one with Jerry. He's understanding, funny, very knowledgeable, and holds his customers in a very high regard. He called while I was driving, so my girlfriend answered. I almost drove off the road, when she said "Its that guy Jerry you buy all you knives from."

So what was the solution?

Sooo....

Now that the ratweiler CG is being re-released, I can only assume that the "private matter" involves the upcoming re-release of the Rat Daddy. Right? Gotta be that...

After hearing from the OP for a couple weeks complaining about the warranty I guess we will never know. Disappointing at best...
