So, I inherited a great dog

Although keep in mind that Maisy-girl may be a little jealous with Jedi's co-mod status!

Congrats.

Great Pooch Brian,.... I have a shepard mix going on 14yrs...thought her last days are near...they are great dogs !!!

Good deal Brian. Every pup is a good dog. Just needs a good person to take care of it and shape it. I have no doubt that before we know it... that dog will be a badass drummer. lol

That's great news bro and lucky for Jedi that he has managed to find an owner that enjoys the outdoors as much as yourself !!!!!

It still blows my mind how anyone can abandon a dog in the first place though !!!!

My thoughts exactly!

Thanks, Guys. I guess the lady had a major nervous breakdown - lost her kids, job, etc. Not pretty. I'm told when she left and didn't come back, that's only when Jedi got some gray around his snout. He freaks everytime I have to leave the house, but I try to take him everywhere I can!

It's incredible how "soft" dogs can be. You can virtually see how their hearts break when someone who they love leaves them behind, even for a short time. They can express so much with their faces alone - not just feelings but also thoughts. And the older they get, the more they can "tell" you and they understand as much of what you're saying as a 2-3year old child.

awesome hell be a great friend. sad to hear about the lady leaving the dog behind, but i guess everything happens for a reason, because now hes got you to take care of him. One thing about dogs if you treat them right they 'll be a loyal companion through thick and thin. Awesome post made my day.

Comgrats Brian---

I just got a German Shepherd Puppy(my fifth)---

You will be amazed at how fast they learn!!!!

A wonderful looking dog, Brian. I can understand people who might be in a position to *need* to give away their dog because of various circumstances, but I will NEVER understand people who abandon their animals. I can get flared up pretty rapidly over that one.

I really like both the chow and shepherds (still own a shepherd). The combination should make for a most excellent dog with the right training. My wife and I are huge believers in formal training for ones dog. Gives good exposure to other trained animals and people (even helps a dog sort out good people from bad) for a mentally well-rounded dog. Contrary to popular belief, NO DOG is too old for training (we trained gun dogs at one time). A little food treat and positive reinforcement during training will have the motivated dog on your side in no time. :)

Glad you decided to give the dog a good home!

Brian, how did you ascertain that he was a chow/shepherd mix? I don't see any chow in him, maybe a bit of shepherd.

To me he looks like a newly recognized, but very ancient breed of Southern Yellow Cur.

I'm not making that up, by the way!

Congrats on a good dog!

Andy,

Thanks for the info - the mix is what I was told. He might even have some others mixed in. The girl who raised him also had reared his father - it would be interesting to find that he's a Yellow Cur dog - thanks for the info. I'll look it up!

Thanks everyone!

Dannyboy, yeah I love training animals. An ex-gf of mine was a professional animal trainer at zoos and aquariums. I learned a lot about it from her. He already has the basics down - sit, stay, etc. But I need to work more with him on obeying when he gets excited - his discipline is lacking. I don't need to have him getting hurt chasing after bears and other things in the woods!

EDIT: Andy, I see what you're saying - he looks exactly like I'd think a Cur/Shepard mix would. I definitely don't see the Chow in him either...thanks again for the lead!

Brian, I've heard them called Yellow Cur Dogs, Southern Yellow Curs, or Black Mouthed Curs.

Here are a couple pics:

Here's a pic of a Black Mouth Cur:

Andy beat me to it! :D

I really see the Cur in him for sure.

He is an awesome, awesome dog already. I'm really happy.

Looks familiar! Is that what Jedi is, ya think?

Andy

Andy, absolutely - I am even not certain about the Shepard part now! I only was going by what I was told.

When I first saw him, I was surprised when told that he was a mixed breed - he just doesn't have that "pieced together" look of a mix.

Brian, this breed has only been recognized in the last few years. They are very common in the South, but also in South America.

They are a stable mixture of lots of different dog breeds, kinda like what you get when you mix a lot of different colors together, you usually end up with the same thing.

We've had a few over the years. One thing I can say about them is that they are generally very sweet tempered, but not necessarily the smartest dogs in the world. Smart enough, but not genius dog smart, if you know what I mean.
