So, I inherited a great dog

Great job on the dog Brian, when brought out a bunch, dogs and the o'doors go together like peas an carrotS!

I had a Chow/Shepperd that adopted my family. He was the most amazing dog in the world. Incredibly loyal. He eventually got bored of the family life and went back out into the world to be a bachelor again.

Great looking dog.

Good job taking the little guy in. He'll repay you every chance he gets.

Repayment has already started. I trained him to heel yesterday, without pulling -- he has picked it up and retained it very quickly. It came in handy right away because, I also added the "stop" command for intersections, and I said stop - and a dumbass on a scooter blew a stopsign right in front of us and would have clobbered the dog and/or me.

He fell alseep with his head on my leg this a.m. Training him is such a great way to really establish the bond and the relationship. He already seems like he is coming out of his shell, and I see a great deal more of his personality, and it's just fantastic to witness.

My next door neighbor said the girl who owned him would just keep him out on his run alone in the backyard for days and nights at a time and only intermittently feed him when she came out of a pot-induced stupor long enough. Grrrr....how can people get a pet and then neglect them so badly?

Thanks again everyone!

Great looking dog there Brian. They learn quickly when given a little love and attention.
After about 20 years of not having a dog, my girlfriend decided she wanted to have a dog.So reluctantly I gave in and said OK.
Well the greatest thing happened, he has become my companion and little buddy, loves walk's in the woods and camping and is by my side all the time---he is great---

DJJ, I saw her sig, and I agree! It's outstanding.

Can't wait to get jedi out into the mountains. We'll do more training out there!

Just my two cents......he looks like he is part Rhodesian Ridgeback. Does he have that strip of hair growing in the opposite direction down his spine? His head and coloring are just like that breed. Beautiful dog you have there!

Thanks, 3REDUCK!

I thought of that too, but no hair growing in the opposite direction.

Here's another pic from a website of a Black Mouth Cur Dog:

The house I moved into in NC had a previous tenant who abandoned her 4 year old chow/shepard mix, Jedi. I decided, after much thought and bonding, to keep him. Time to train him for the woods so I can bring him on my excursions into the Appalachian/Smokey Mountains. So, say hello to Jedi, the moderator dog! :)

BTW This is a Nice looking Dog and You are a Good Man for giving it a Good Home.:)

Hey Brian, I have BMC or ABC (Black Mouth Cur or American Blackmouth Cur) that is very similar to your pooch. My dog's hair stands up on her back when she is agitated, but the hair changes to a darker color and goes in the same direction as the rest of the hair on her back (oposit of a Rhodesian Ridgeback). She drags me for a walk and is not very tolerant of other dogs, but is a natural hunter. BMC's were breed to hunt everything from tree rats to bears! My dog loves being in the woods and I have trained her to bloodtrail wounded game (deer and hogs).
Good luck with Jedi; Karma has brought you both together for a good reason and purpose!

Thanks, 5551

And thanks, Swampdog - good to hear from another Cur owner.

and, of course, thanks again to Andy for the information on Jedi's true breed!

Back in June I was looking to adopt an Aussie Cattle dog mix to join us on our small farm and we found a cute month old little pup from a rescue group in PA that saves pregnant females on death row. We saw his mom and she looked Cattle doggish with maybe some Boxer mixed and the rescue lady said the father was unknown. Well to make a long story short, little Barney is quickly morphing into a what looks like a Terrier as he is now five months old. He is such a cool guy that we are not disappointed at all that he wont be more like an Aussie. Now the point of this, our vet advised that for $130 we can get a new DNA test which will tell us his complete backround. It is probably a good thing to know this as then I will know what inclinations and breed behaviors he may have, and can then make adjustments to his training. Brian, you might be interested in going this route too. Also, best of luck with your new pal.

Well, he's got the hunter instinct. We just need to work on his finishing skills...:D

As I sat here on my front porch a minute ago, a sparrow flew down onto the grass, then the dog pounced but the sparrow escaped and slowly flew, dazed, onto the deck right in front of me. I waited to see what Jedi would do and see if nature would take its course.

Jedi followed and couldn't believe it: he went right up to the bird sitting there on the deck, stared at it, and then -CHOMP! - clamped it into his mouth. The bird screeched "Wii! Wii! Wii!" Jedi let go and looked at it dumbfoundedly. Then it flew away back up into the maple in the front yard.

He followed it with his eyes then turned and looked wistfully at me, like, "I'm sorry. I screwed that one up.."

Oy! We gots work to do. :D
