So, I inherited a great dog

Brian, this breed has only been recognized in the last few years. They are very common in the South, but also in South America.

They are a stable mixture of lots of different dog breeds, kinda like what you get when you mix a lot of different colors together, you usually end up with the same thing.

We've had a few over the years. One thing I can say about them is that they are generally very sweet tempered, but not necessarily the smartest dogs in the world. Smart enough, but not genius dog smart, if you know what I mean.

Andy

Thanks again, Andy. Looking at more pics, he's not as long and lean as the Cur dogs, so he may have some shepard in him after all, too. This particular pup is razor-sharp smart, though, so maybe I got lucky and got one with a high I.Q.!

Just today, on a walk, I kept him outside when I went into the convenience store to get some water. I heard him whimpering outside. Was gone only a minute, but he was so excited to see me when I came out, his whole body was wagging and he was INSISTING I pet him for a minute before we got going again. He kept whimpering and yodeling in happiness as I did it. :D

From a dog's point of view, there's no such thing as a "pieced together" critter. :) They have a much better perspective on socialization and existence, albeit not one I would care to embrace.

"How's yer butt smell?"

:(

Glad you got him. Glad he got you.

Brian: If you're not already doing so, please consider catching an episode or two (or more) of the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic. The man's name is Cesar Millan. I just think he has a good grasp of the relationship between man and dog, and he's given me lots of insights, even if I don't agree with absolutely everything. I've owned dogs almost all my life, but I still got a whole new perspective from that show. -- Bear

Oh, I dunno Kis. I was in KC once a long time ago when some little boys came running up to me: "Hey mister! You wanna see the ugliest dog in the whole world??"

How can you pass that up?

So I followed them down the block a ways, and there he was. Not *ugly*, really, but definitely pieced together.

A Bassett/German Shepherd mix, but he hadn't mixed very well. Front legs Bassett, back legs Shepherd, tail Bassett, head Bassett with Shepherd ears. Shepherd color pattern, with Bassett colors..... you get the picture. I wish I had taken one, that was one messed up mutt!

You did move here! I was wondering why you were asking about training with Mercop in NC in PracTac.

Yeap! I'm-a stayin'! :)

Always a good idea. He trains the owners more than the dogs! I've had dogs all my life growing up, but this is the first I have had in a few years. He'll be going with me everywhere I can possibly take him.

Happy trails to you both. Man and dog in the sticks - complementary systems watching over each other. Top bananas amigo.

Dannyboy, yeah I love training animals. An ex-gf of mine was a professional animal trainer at zoos and aquariums. I learned a lot about it from her. He already has the basics down - sit, stay, etc. But I need to work more with him on obeying when he gets excited - his discipline is lacking. I don't need to have him getting hurt chasing after bears and other things in the woods!

Well, at least he has the basics down. The rest should be easy. BTW, we had a golden lab/shepherd mix that looked almost identical to yours.

My wife has a staffordshire terrier that just recently discovered that chasing squirrels, at all cost, has an element of "fun" to it. Our training is not complete. :D

Okay, reading on the Cur dogs, they like to tree squirrels. Jedi just did so in exactly the way it was described. He went from zero to 60 mph instantly and almost got it, except he reached the end of his run suddenly. :D

Nice dog, Brian! Me and the missus just got a dog from the pound a couple weeks ago. He's a beagle/basset mix that we call Marley. I've always found mutts tend to be the best dogs around.

Where, exactly, in NC are you? If you ever make it up my way, give me a shout! :D

Out west near the Smokey Mountains. I'll definitely give you a shout.

It's time to have a forum NC gathering don't you guys think?

Man, I know it pretty well. My cousin went to school at UNC, along with several of my buddies. You're only about 160 miles away from me, actually. So.. what? 2.5 hour drive, give or take? Yeah, we could have a NC gathering, for sure. Go eat at that McDonalds that looks like the Biltmore house, if you havent already. :p
