So .... where ya from!

As per the discussion that killed the SDFK thread, I’m from Birmingham. Not the American, “BirmingHAM”, but the original, and still the worst, “BURminum”. Provincial backwater, laughing stock, reviled for the accent . . . oh, and it just happens to be the city that created the entire effin’ modern world.

It wasn’t actually a bad place to grow up, but let’s just say it gave me an appreciation of elsewhere. Since leaving high school I spent roughly a year in Nepal, 3 in Cambridge, 5 in Lao (no “s” required), 3 in London, 2 in the Stans, 14 in DC, and in 2 weeks, I’m moving to the Ethiopian highlands.

I also want out.
It seems to be going around in this state lol. Good portion of my friends have left. The others all want to leave also. Kinda crazy as I really do or did love this state. I mean it’s beautiful , but it’s changed so much. From when I grew up to now, I don’t recognize it anymore. Sooo much change and don’t get me started on taxes and politics lol

Born in Texas, raised in Kansas, last 50+ years in California - most recent 15 years on the Central Coast of California - where this week, it is only in the mid 60

I've also lived in Chicago, Atlanta, Ft Lauderdale, NYC, St Louis - among various other cities in the states mentioned above.

Born in Geneva, lived 6 years in France, 14 in Germany, 13 years in Switzerland, and the rest in the US/Bay Area.

Small world, well kinda! Went to school in Switzerland in the French canton from 1977-1979 (in Bluche-sur-Sierre bottom of Crans Montana). My French was total crap and kept struggling with baccalaureate so I literally ran away to switch to an American HS system and then instantly became like top of the class material 🤣 (yeah even the American HS edumacation system was way too easy and a breeze through back then!). Then went to college in London (fell behind a bit by one year to get my A-Levels). Loafed around in London for 10 years and totally eff'ed up that place before the proverbial bus came and dropped my arse off in Los Angeles which I think was the end of the line!

Been in So. Cal for the past 32 years! A very very very strong chance that I'll end up off-grid in a little hamlet by Gasquet (Crescent City, CA) next year around this time. That has been the plan kinda for the past 2 years but then Covid came and as the saying goes, "it all got cocked up!".

Small world, well kinda. I know someone who recently sold an off-grid hamlet in Gasquet to move closer to town and the grandkids. The Smith River is awesome.

We'll end up (mostly off-grid) in WY in a couple of years. But you guys all know this from my knife pics, I'm guessing :). God's country, can't wait.

You seem to be quite familiar :) Life is just at a different pace up there, much more rural without the hustle and bustle of ever engorging CA's major cities and counties. Anyway, the idea is more honest physical work and less reliance on modern medication marvel (Statins, blood pressure tabs, stuff like that). I owe it to myself to at least give it a trial period to finally STFU yammering about it. Who knows, maybe some of these 40 or so CPK safe queens may even finally be put to some use. Actually that is another conundrum of its own and a subject for an entirely different thread! What to keep for work / use and what else not to sell to Marc, like never ever!

Good luck with your aspirations. I've seen your digs in past pictorials and you Sir are in totally different league than me. I may even have to push "muh tray-lor" for the last couple hundred feet to nestle it somehow in the corner. Having done some squats in my youth finally comes to use 🤣

I just realized that I've spent half my adult (post-high school) life in DC. No wonder I'm becoming such a bad driver, but why can I still not tell the difference between go-go and funk?
