SoCal Mountain Lion Attack

Well, with all the fires, they are probably having a hard time finding food and are getting pushed into the urban areas. A starving animal, or human for that matter, will do things that are uncharacteristic of it's natural behavior.
I know the same thing happened with the fire in Morgan Hill. My boss lives by lake anderson and said that they were having more mt. lion sitings near his house towards the end of that fire.

Thats interesting and I wonder if the same logic applies to black bears, it'll be something if sightings of all large predatory animals in the area goes up.

Mountain Lion Kills Dog, Wounds Another In Duarte
DUARTE, Calif. (AP) ― Officials say a mountain lion wandered into a backyard in Duarte and killed a German shepherd and injured another dog.

The lion attacked the dogs early Wednesday at a hillside home in the city in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. It partially ate the German shepherd.

The state Department of Fish and Game is warning residents in foothill communities in the area to keep their pets indoor at night.

Thanks,

Well I hope that no rash acts are taken. Whne the dear populations moves so does the mountain lion. Hopefully these lions won't become to acustom to humans.

Up here on VI we have the highest rate of cougar attacks in the world. I live in Victoria and a couple of years ago saw one in the university which is surrounded by residential areas for quite a ways. I can understand why it wanted to be there, what with all the rabbits and drunk res students but not how it managed to go unnoticed through so much of the city. I remember hearing a few years ago that they had one in the underground parking lot of the Empress Hotel (right in the core of downtown). Those dang things get everywhere.

CA is reaping the rewards of banning mountain lion hunting and living in mountain lion country.

I remember a thread a while back where some touted dogs would tear apart a mountain lion. ? I begged to differ and got smacked.

Seems reasonable now I guess.

Skam

News said a mountain lion was seen near a school in Redlands today. Didn't say which school, but that's near where I live.

I hike pretty much daily in the hills around my house (Reche/San Timoteo Canyons). The fire roads are dusty this time of year, and you can see tracks very well. I am seeing a very large increase in the number of deer tracks, which is unusual. And what is the mountain lion's favorite prey...deer!

I occasionally have seen bobcats, but never even a single mountain lion track. Fires have kept the brush low for the last few years, and I don't think there is enough cover for a mountain lion...but then I didn't think there was enough cover for deer either. I'll be watching my back!!!

Yeap.

That's what happens when eggheads try and legislate nature. Every so often mankind needs to reminded we are not exactly 'top' of the food chain.

+2 on this,
everytime I hear of a lion attack on a human, I think, "hope it was one that voted to ban hunting them"
If anyone should turn into lion turds, it should be them.

What would be the benefit of shooting them into extinction? Would you prefer living in a world where the only wild animals can be found in zoos?

I'm sure these incidents are pretty isolated. I guarantee you more people get killed in motor car accidents in a single day than get killed by mountain lions in an entire year.

I don't hear people calling for a reduced speed limit...

I'm all for hunting these things to keep them away from human settlements - but it would be rather unfair to hunt them into extinction. There could be a balance, and there is with many other animals. Leave the cats some space of their own, and they're less likely to come feast in our backyards.

Yeah, big cats don't play fair. It doesn't matter how big, or tough, and mean or bred to fight the dog is, if the first thing it notices is a pair of fangs crushing its neck and the full weight of the cat pulling it down. That's usually permanent nap time for any dog.

I doubt anyone is talking about shooting them into extinction. But animal control (game management) applies to any animal...game or predator.

Well, I may be wrong about this, but a banning order on the hunting of an animal is usually only introduced when their numbers have dwindled to the point that the males can't find the females to propagate the species.

The next step beyond that is usually extinction.

And if you were threatened by mountain lion in your own back yard, surely it isn't against the law to shoot one?

I would imagine that would constitute self-defence.

Laws made on an emotional basis are never sound. That is what was done in California. Sound game management will reinstill the natural wariness of the cougar to humans.
