Sodbuster...and lots of them!

I have a review thread of my Mudbug over here, but here are some pics from it if you just want some knife porn:D

....please recommend ur favorite soddies...
I've got 4 of the pattern and I like them more than I thought I would.

- Queen Country Cousin - D2 steel green Micarta "first generation". Nice knife and I like the blade profile though it is a bit overall stockier than the Case blade. Took some work to get the blade as sharp as I like it but once I did it's easy to maintain.

- Case Chestnut Bone CV SB Jr- carbon steel, and unlike most Case knives uses a full-flat grind rather than the hollow ground. Polished blade. Really liking this knife for carry because it is so flat.

- Case Amber Jigged Bone SS SB Jr- stainless steel, same as the CV mentioned above otherwise. Took a really good edge and is one of my more frequent carries.

- Case Black Synthetic SB Jr - This one has the "as ground" satin finish and the embellished blade. This one does have the hollow ground blade which makes it a wicked slicer. Thicker handles than the bone version. This is one of the few knives I've received that was so sharp out of the box that I didn't need to do anything to it. Very nicely made, great snap, fit/finish. Not bad for a $19 knife.

The only thing left on my vague wish-list in this pattern is a full sized Sod Buster. All of the above are the "junior" including the Queen which is about the same size. I am leaning towards the Case Sod Buster in the navy blue synthetic, next time I am in a knife buying mood.

So from the above, if I were picking out a recommendation list for you:

- Case SB Jr in one of the bone handled versions to suit your taste in your preference of steel (or both)
- Case SB Jr in either the black or yellow Delrin (or both)
- Case SB full-sized in your choice of handle (Blue, Black, or Yellow Delrin)
- Queen Country Cousin if you can find one of the older versions
- Something from GEC if your budget and tastes run that direction.

Never liked the Sod Buster and I first owned one in the mid seventies and REALLY tried to like it. The pocket knife was just too large and at times, unwieldy. I got rid of it.

At the same time, I had a Sod Buster Jr. that was THE perfect work knife for me AND rode the pocket nicely. Over the years I've had various and sundry knives. I'm finally coming back to the Sod Buster Jr. Having 4 Sod Buster Jr now, I still find the black handled "as ground" hollow ground blade to be the ONE. The Yellow, the Workman Blue and the Chestnut Bone I have are all nice and I truly like them ... but that hollow "as ground" blade gets the job done for me and the blade shape makes it easier to open without using the nail nick. Due to the grind, the top of the blade has what amounts to a grabber shoulder, easily pinched. Make mine a Jr please and thank you :) ...

BrotherJim, the pinch open factor is one of the reasons I love my sodbusters. Almost every sodbuster I own is a pinch open able knife. There are a few that I can't and that usually turns me off to that particular knife.

Thanks for the pix, Gents.
Jim- Try a Bear & Son Farmhand Jr., in G10. So simple.

I only have 2 Case Sodbuster juniors at the moment and looking for a couple more. I got one a few years ago when I started getting rid of my one-hand openers and decided after a few months I needed another one.

What I would really like to find is one with a bail for attaching a lanyard. Years ago I knew an old boatswains mate who carried one with a bail and lanyard, I think he may have modded it himself but it looked well done. I don't remember the brand but did anyone make one like this in the seventies or eighties?

You can opt for the GEC F&F #71 version which comes with a lanyard hole. Then you'll find several dealers carry the GEC bail that fits those knifes with lanyard holes. Just add one of those bails to the #71 F&F and you've got your wish. ;)

can anyone tell me what the first year was that cae made the yellow sodbuster...and the blue sodbuster

I have no idea on the yellow handled models since they've been out for a long while, but I do know the dark blue American Workman Sodbuster showed up sometime in early 2006.

This thread is quite a tribute to a very simple tool. I had no idea so many different varieties were out there. He's one that I forced a patina on. Now it's going to work:thumbup:
