Some observations and unsolicited advice

Damn Jim. I start picking on you and you have to spoil it by posting something classy like that. :)

No offense taken and none intended. I really didn't want to single you like that but I thought some of your comments illustrated the topic of this thread. Maybe I was reading too much between the lines. I hope I was.

Still, I think there is no substitute for experience, or paying your dues as it may be. It is true that the wealth of information available on the Internet and other sources can speed up the learning process from what it would have been years ago. I know that tapping into the knowledge of my teachers experience probably saved me countless hours of learning from my mistakes because he had already made them and could tell me how to avoid them, provided that I listen of course. Sometimes I still had to find it out for myself.

I still grind a blade basically the same way I did when I started but the results are much better now because through experience I learned the little bits of knowledge about pressure, speed, and how to feel what the belt is doing. No amount of reading or demonstration could have taught me that, only experience could.

I admire your passion and eagerness. Good luck to you. I'm sure we'll be staring at each other across the aisle again someday.

Mike
