Someone talk me into or out of buying a Strider SNG..

Unfortunately, I supported him before all the crapstorm. "Supported" might be an understatement. Hell, I probably put his kids through college.

I have owned dozens of Striders and M. Strider customs. At the time, they were exceptional, and not many were trying to compete with him except Ernie, perhaps. I now own only 2 - my SMF for sentimental reasons, and my custom Nightmare GB (one of two he made).

I never had any issues with customer service and spoke to Mick directly, on several occassions. He was also prompt to respond to emails.

Fast forward to today's offerings and market, Striders are worth no where near the value they command on the secondary market IMO. They are "ok" knives with "ok" steel and "ok" heat treatment by today's standards. The exception were the blades with HT by Bos. They were pretty nice.

Back on point - I never really liked the SnG for reasons already stated, primarily too much choil and the awkward handle to blade angle.

Pics of my Nightmare GB and SMF, just for reference:

As far as I know Strider is still using the old Bos heat treat facility and they run the same formula with the same equipment. Doesn’t matter who does it; it’s formulaic. Not sure about the newer models, by my SnG from 2013/14 is in Z-Wear which is far from an “ok” steel and it’s HT is the Bos formula. The thing is tough as nails. The newer stuff from Mick’s custom shop I know virtually nothing about, so they may have “ok” steel. Seems that when Dwyer left, they stopped experimenting with steels as frequently.

Mickey ray burger (strider) is a piece of crap.

Don't support scumbags who lie about military service. There's a long history here on bladeforums.com if you use the search function.

Wannabe ranger should be embarrassed to show his face. Some people have no shame.
Well, if Spark’s opinion is to be believed (not debating that), Spark admits he served in Ranger Batt. He just didn’t serve in any combat deployment. So, he was a Ranger and a wannabe combat vet. That’s a tad more accurate.

To be "more accurate" let's drop the link for people to go through:

Mickey ray burger NEVER served as a Ranger. Supposedly (🙄) he attended RIP. Going through rip (allegedly) and then being kicked out of the military with a dishonorable discharge doesn't "make him a ranger". Dude has a Ranger tattoo on his forearm and made up stories of him as an operator in Somalia while he only actually did a grand total of 11 months in the army and was booted out dishonorablely as an E1, the lowest rank possible.

He (mickey ray burger) altered his dd214 but thankfully Kevin (spark) pulled the actual dd214.

There are 2 types of Ranger identifiers, scroll and tab. Attending Ranger school, gets you a Ranger tab. Completing rip gets you a scroll. This loser getting a Ranger tattoo for completing rip and almost immediately going awol is about as legit as qtrmstr's headquarters and museum in Texas.

He never earned the title Ranger. The guys who are scrolled take pride in the grunt work they do, a washout who couldn't hack it, and immediately goes AWOL hasn't had any significant training, has never deployed anywhere and hasn't earned the scroll. That's the equivalent of a guy making it through basic training and immediately going awol and getting chaptered out with a dishonorable discharge calling themselves a "soldier". Right. Doesn't work like that.

I was active duty army from 08 to 12. Have a book of shit including a dd214 that I can bring next time I go hang out with Kevin and boru13 at one stop Knife shop and let Kevin (who is also a veteran) go over my shit. Actually last time I was there we chatted about our time in the army for a few hours.

Mickey ray burger isn't a Ranger. He's a liar and a fraud. He never served as a Ranger. Hope that is "accurate" enough.

And by the way, Spark FOIA'ing mick burgers dd214 isn't his opinion. It's a department of defense form that is 100% fact.

The fact that mickey ray burger falsified his own dd214 and had to have an actual soldier (kevin) pull his through the foia is pathetic. It's dishonorable as hell and its unbecoming of a soldier much less a Ranger to do.

65 days in a Ranger regiment is not something someone should put on their resume. Accounting for in-processing/out-processing of Regiment, that’s like 4-6 weeks of time doing day to day work… and if he was kicked out THAT fast, my suspicion is he showed up at Ranger batt. and started acting a fool. What do I mean by that? Showing up late to formations, or drunk, getting in trouble on weekends, back-talking superiors.. a mental head-case.. I mean you read between the lines and you can formulate a picture. He was probably put on work details by the 1SG until they could get his @$$ gone. In any case, I wouldn’t support the guy or his work for his grossly exaggerated embellishments of “time in special operations”. The guy didn’t deploy with the Rangers, and probably didn’t even conduct a single field training exercise.

With Strider knives you either love it or hate it. They’re built with one purpose in mind and that’s to be hard use tools, hence why they continue to ship them out in ziplock baggies.

If you’re supper nit-picky with your knives and don’t really use them I’d say don’t go with Striders. They almost all have lock stick (it gets a little better but it’s usually always there) I wouldn’t say it’s bad lock stick but yea. They’re almost all usually not centered lol and Strider doesn’t consider an off-center knife an issue.

The 3/4 grind blades are super thick and not really for me. Their other drop point is a pretty good alternative and is pretty slicey.

I like mine a lot. Super fun to fidget, on washers, and eventually when I get around to using it hard I know it’s going to serve me well. Their customers service is great as well.

Overall I would recommend if you keep everything I mentioned in mind.

So you just carry it around to take pictures of?

I find that hard to believe

Their warranty is very good, but if you consider communication a big part of customer service, they are a bit lacking. Once you realize this, things go smoother, and you don't waste your time trying to get a response-just let them do the work and get it back. They have always been a small and slightly understaffed company.

Well, the point D DMG takes issue with, is the same that I got a good laugh out of. "Best customer service of any brand"? Really? LOL No.

Plenty of knife companies we talk about here on BF will take care of people 100%. A stolen valor scumbucket like Mickbag McBurgerfries categorically does not have "the best customer service of any brand". It was a laughable assertion to begin with.

I believe Strider has a cult-like following, and it drives a lot of the sensationalism and exaggeration on the quality of the product and customer service. Now I have never owned a Strider and never will, but I can only surmise by the amount of them I see for sale that people buy them and they end up not meeting expectations. Some people may say “I don’t care what Mickley Hamburglar has done, I like the knives”… but you are enabling him to continue to profit from lies and deceit. If you buy the knife, you support the company.

Exactly this! All of this.

A friend had one gifted to him by a buddy in one of the private military firms. Sounds like they handed them out like candy on deployments. My friend didn't know the history of the company, so it was just an EDC for him.
It is a nice knife but I don't see the hype myself, and it looks too tactical for me to carry at work. The tiger shark blade would probably scare people.

The only time a tiger stripe blade would be practical:

Yeah, SnGs are selling readily for premiums. Sorry you can’t sell your fixed blade, but that’s not the case with the SnG and SMF.
Believe it or not. I can't even give it away. when someone tries to cut with it. They just say no thanks man. Even the pawn shop refused it saying no one would buy it due to the blade issues.
The point of my post I should have clarified better on is that Mr Strider. At least for me has been impossible to get a hold of concerning customer service. I have politely sent him 3 Emails in a month's time roughly every 10 days. Asking if he would re sharpen and redo the angle of my knife. I even offered to pay shipping and his time for doing the service.
I like the knife very well in terms of looks and handle design. I am just a bit turned off that I cannot reach out to the man considering this thing ran me $300 to request some help and basic customer service.
If I had the know how I would do it myself. But the work it needs this requires someone with more skill/tools than myself.
The lack of customer service on a $300 purchase is what bugs me.

Like others have stated I have the ProTech version, that's enough for me. The handle to blade ratio is odd, though comfortable. The choil is nicely done and comfortable, but when not used only exaggerates the handle ratio more.

I haven't felt the need to pursue a "real" Strider; namesake's backstory notwithstanding.

You are likely wasting your time. As I have already stated, they are poor on communication, but even if they they were not, it is doubtful they would reprofile it for you. Your best bet is to go to a professional who does that sort of work. Some like the fixed blades, but they are not what I need or want.
