Song Sung BLUE: Blue-handled Traditional Knives

What a great idea for a thread, Sarah! I never feel blue looking at blue knives. Here are mine:

Victorinox (The Huntsman was a gift from my boss, now friend)

Some Case peanuts and a toothpick.

A Case Eisenhower (my favorite Case model).

Northwoods Broadway Jack in camel bone and Michigan Jack in denim micarta.

Here, Erik's and my opinions diverge; I can definitely lust them all! :D Some of the acrylics posted here are especially stunning!

LOL, Just goes to show that every once in a while a spelling error can actually make sense. *list them all* ;)

Sarah, Blue it is!! :D Here is a couple! :)

Holy Smokes-- thanks, everyone for coming forth with your blue beauties.

Great knives! I love blue. I should have something in the next week to post here. Also: GEC, please put a guitar shield on a non-acryllic knife. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to seeing whatever-it-is, given the good taste you've evinced so far. :)

I hadn't really put together that GEC's Tango knives, with guitar shields, have all sported acrylic (perylic?) covers. You're right-- it would be fun to see a guitar shield set in a natural material.

Or maybe GEC wants to keep the series sort of 'out there'...?

(The etch, it needed to go. Fast.)

As with most acrylics, it's hard to capture the depth of the color(s) and how the material fires up when moving in the light.... But it's a sight to behold, in person.

Dang, that's a beaut. Count me among those who also forget about that one until I see it again (or maybe again, and again, and then again, as per your follow-up tale of replacements? :D). The jigging and coloration fit that pattern so well.

The blue itself is more what I consider "stonewashed" than the solid bright blue with the same name found on one of GEC's other notable examples, an early #25 barlow:

Ka-BOOM. This knife, this pattern, jumps out of almost every picture I've ever seen it in.

Speaking of 'stonewashed'-- I have no idea what this one's officially called, but it's sure fine:
I've had the blues in the past but this is the only blue I own today but yet makes me anything but blue:o;)

Thats a lot of good looking blues P. Here's my blues :)

That's some of the best blue I think I've seen, both in hue and in the variegated saturation. Wowzer.

(Thank you, ScruffUK, wherever you are. :))

While I keep the above knife in its slipcase (because I don't want the expanse of smooth blue to become scritched up), this one-- a surprise gift from pmew(!)-- lives on my key and gets rough-and-tumbled:

Great knives and photos, Sarah.

Lovely collection, Sarah.

I don't own one blue knife. There's a few here I'd be real happy with though. Great thread!

Very, very nice, Sarah, especially the Select peanut, my favorite of yours.

There are some very nice knives in this thread - Thanks for starting it Sarah.

Thanks guys, and you're welcome!

Whether I respond to each post or not, I'm loving seeing all these blue beauties roll out.

I don't know that blue-handled knives are, in themselves, all that traditional...? But I so enjoy the wide variety of blue 'takes' in material, hue and saturation, jigging, etc., and the overall visual effect on so many different patterns-- in both my own collection, and in the others presented here.

Case's navy blue bone tends to be stellar, and I echo the praise for that Copperhead-- top-shelf bone, there.

Just for you P.

Quite an amazing collection Sarah but my favorite is still that mini trapper that we have talked about before! I would LOVE that knife! Those Peanuts would be a close second and third though! ;)

B.B.King's got nuthin' on you Sarah!

Rough Rider Ocean Wave Blue Pearl Peanut
Case Blue Luster Trapper

I couldn't find the Victorinox Sapphire Signature Lite. The Peanut is hard to photograph - it looks dull in the photo, but it's not.

Well crap, I cannot compete with all the amazing beauties shown so far. So this is all I could come up with, a few ultra cheaps. A blue/grey Colt (amount of blue depends on the light). A Frost that looks purple in my pic, but usually looks blue to me. And a Stoneworx RR that "includes" blue. Sorry they are not up to par with all of the above.

This sure is a wondrous thread to browse, over and over again, already! :)

Trand, I know I've seen many (most? all?) of yours before, but: Wow. The Hawthornes(?) especially are fine. In the midst of the more refined offerings, that blue micarta continues to stands out to me. [Have I ever asked you who refurbished the GEC for you? Are the fixed blade knife's covers its own?]

In 1997 Schatt and Morgan in their Annual Reproduction Keystone Series, made by Queen, put out 6 knives. One in pearl and 5 in a very dark blue. In fact I had a hard time getting any color to show up in the photos. I don't dislike blue scales on a knife but I bought this set because of the diversity of patterns it held.

IMG_0247.jpg

Thanks, Dave. I wasn't aware of this particular series, and don't know that I would have noticed the blue had you not pointed it out, then gone to great lengths to capture it-- or at least hints thereof. Nicely done.

Here's my new blue mammoth ivory Michigan Jack:

I've been admiring this knife in other threads. Thanks for posting it here!

All told, KSF is doing a bang-up job in bringing forth some of the best blues I've seen-- and more! Someone there has discerning taste.

[I like to say that "blue" is not just a color, but a way of life, so much do I gravitate towards it. However, blue is not always my first choice for a knife handle(!). But the right blue, in amongst and in contrast to other offerings, is sweet indeed. As the ongoing array presented here demonstrates.]

Quite an amazing collection Sarah but my favorite is still that mini trapper that we have talked about before! I would LOVE that knife! Those Peanuts would be a close second and third though! ;)

If it's any consolation, I remember how much you like it. ;)

Well crap, I cannot complete with all the amazing beauties shown so far.

The great thing is, it isn't a competition, just an avenue of sharing and appreciation. Thanks for posting your knives. I especially like the Colt:

Thanks, Charlie!

But, I may as well get this one over with, some true blues regarding blue.

As best I can tell, I have terminally misplaced my blue-handled Strix, a Terrio Handmade Knives custom. :(

I last remembered having it when I was packing up for GEC's Rendezvous in August; I first missed it a I after I'd been back home for at least couple weeks-- I didn't unpack all of my knives right away.

I don't recall having the Strix out while in Titusville, except maybe in a hotel room-- which is where I fear it perhaps tumbled out during switcheroos of baggage and location right at the end? I wish I could remember really, really looking through the room before leaving, to know that I didn't leave it behind, but I don't think I did-- I was in a hurry.

ARGH.

I have now looked everywhere I can think of here at least 26 times, over the last 2.5 months, and it's not turning up.

James Terrio has assured me he remembers how to make the thing, but I am sad and disappointed in my evident carelessness.

Sarah, I'm sorry to say that it was traded, then it got sold. I do know who owns it if you'd like to inquire about it's availability. Send me a PM or an email.

You have a great collection of blues!

Sarah, I recall you have a blue Radio Jack. No?

Oh, yes YES. :)
