Until you andReally interesting to see the hotdog shield on a Northfield!![]()
I felt the same about the people making the Hotdog and Cloud shield comments. “Tedious” is a good adjective to describe it. I felt like they were trying to be the cool people, but didn’t realize they sounded like newbies.Until you andTravman pointed this out I hadn't noticed it
Maybe as it was only 1 of 25 they had run out of other shields?
I think it suits the knife very well, there were some people a few years back who took to sneering at the Hotdog shield closely followed by the Cloud/Keyhole. I found this ridiculous-tedious as one of GEC's strengths is that they have always offered an interesting range of shields, most of which enhance the knives.
For instance, see his latest post above![]()
Thanks Travis!! I think you could be correct!!??Charlie, sorry for the delayed response. That 36 was made in 2009. The jigging is different from other GEC knives. Maybe they bought the bone slabs pre-jigged.
My understanding is that GEC originally sourced most of their bone from Culpepper before they started their in-house work. Thanks Travis!! I think you could be correct!!??
Isn’t he just! You're right, that is a handsome spear.
Will, you’re not the only one. The Barlow hype train is one easily jumped on, I myself hopped on it at the timeI'm very keen on that, don't know how I came to overlook it, too late now though what with everything being vanished in minutesSturdy but not hulking.
Like the bone colour and the overall proportions of the pattern, the full Spear is well at home in that frame. It's like an English Jack and this time the Spear really is like a Stabber Jack. So called because they had a false edge along part or all of its back, and large. That certainly looks like it could get sharpened from tip to Longpull...a project for the week-end?![]()
Agreed, there’s a definite flat portion from belly to tip, reminiscent of some older style spears from GEC? I personally too have a soft spot for the “fat spear” on the 85s, I can see how they’re not for everyone though as I once too turned my nose up at themLove the length/width ratio and the fact that it doesn't have the bulbous shape like the 85's. Plus, likeWill Power mentioned, it does look much stabbier!
Your dye job on your 94 Travis is![]()

Not only is the 16 already top of my WANT list but the spear on here is top notch. You have other canoes don't you? are all the spears like this?
It's the pattern that dictates the shape of the blade. The 54 and 15 are great examples of older GEC's with narrow spear blades but they also made a lot of the really chubby ones too. The #72 & #79 come to mind. I once had a rather large collection of GEC knives, with many of the fat spears. I don't necessarily dislike them, rather, I prefer a pointy tip as opposed to a blade that will eventually resemble a spoon.Agreed, there’s a definite flat portion from belly to tip, reminiscent of some older style spears from GEC? The ‘tina is coming to River Town!

More like years on shelves. It was because of the double ended bolsters. That's the same exact bolster on the #65 Ben Hogan for perspective. It had the same allure as the #12 French Kate. Funny thing is, I bet that one would sell out in 2 seconds if they brought I back now.H Honest_Thomas CertainlyTravman knows more about the 16 pattern than I do as he owns some. But thought you may find this useful.
Beware, it's a rare pattern only released once I believe and back in those naive untroubled days...it was none too popular and remained untouched on dealer shelves for months....
Think the essential difference is the Northfields is longpull, Tidioute -nick
