Spot revisited

For those that don't like the 'swinging' of a neck carried sheath, I remember reading (in TK authored by the always entertaining and educational Jerry VanCook) that one solution is to run some type of chord (I personally prefer thin leather necklace thong, because it will break before it allows someone to use it to hold you, and it isn't scratchy) through a couple holes and then tie it around your body. I've actually done this, and it is comfortable, doesn't print, and generally works quite well. As I've stated already, the holes on a kydex sheath are there for a reason, and a little ingenuity can allow for almost any type of carry you'd like. I personally feel that adding things like clips (unless they are removable) actually cuts down the carry options available. I believe that a couple of 1 1/2 - 2 inch slots on the side of the sheath are the way to go. It still allows all of the same options for carry, and makes for potentially more options. You could thread a belt through it for handle up or down carry, or loop a piece of velcro through it for horizontal carry. The options would be limitless. Just my opinion.

I just had an idea.

The sheath ( a good one anyway) must be a major expense in the price of a knife in the SPOT price range. How about offering the knife with no sheath at a reduced cost. Then folks could approach one of the many fine custom sheath makers out there for something that really fits theirs needs?

Look forward to getting this new SPOT.
I have one that is serialized with #019. In our department signal codes, that means a man/woman with a knife.

Anyway, even though I have a HAK Straight, I perfer this(SPOT) as a necker, while I perfer my HAK as a vest or belt knife.

Thanks Sal and Spyderco for reinventing this great design.

Sal,

When I jog or when I do family travel .. it is on my neck. I do like the original and would love to try what you're crafting.

(Fair disclosure: I believe neck knives are worse than useless for the vast majority of users. In fact, when legal, I feel that- with the few exceptions who work in fields where a fixed blade naturally fits in- virtually all civilians are better served with a good folder for EDC.)

That said, I'm pretty sure I'd buy a SPOT if a Warncliffe blade were offered, especially if belt carry similiar to what J. Davey is suggesting is an option.

Maybe Im late in this discussion but I am a big fan of the Spot and Fred Perrins works owning over 20 Lagriffes...

I would like to see spyderco consider a reverse tanto style on this knife..it would be awesome and very functional and useful..

Spectre, thanks for backing me up on the idea for the sheath! I now ask Sal again, at the risk of becoming a pest, is there any new news on your updated SPOT design? The suspense is killin' me!

Now I think that a SPOT with a leaf shaped blade would be a micro Laci Szabo's UUK. Cool!

Hey JD, RLR here, the other contributor and honoured tester. Here's a real pic of my original modification:

Didn't know if you'd seen it.

That's a real beaut, RLR...

I think that the SPOT with a Wharny and a longer handle, coupled with a sheath that could be fitted on a belt in a cross-draw would be just the ticket.

RLR, that is almost exactly what I envisioned! I would prefer the blade to have a little bit more 'angle' to it (similar to the new little KaBar back up blade...can't remember what it's called off hand), and a tad bit longer. But the shape of the blade is perfect! My original suggestions to Sal were a slightly longer blade with a straight edge like the Ronin. Evereyone that has held one of my SPOT knives loved the feel of them, but said they thought the blade was a little too short and they worried about difficulty in sharpening. With a wharni style blade, sharpening would be a breeze, and even sharpening the point would be simple. MONGO's rendering is almost perfect. The only thing I would worry about is an overly-acute tip. I always worry about tip strength on my blades because I do a lot of work with the point. I can't wait to see what Sal cooks up! It should be quite cool!

At the risk of repeating myself horrendously, I like the way people are talking here :D

  • Wharncliffe or leaf
  • Angled handle
  • Slightly larger handle
Mmmm!

Really like that mod RLR-did you post anywhere how you did that? I may have to attempt that on my SE model as I have decided (again...) that I prefer PE.

dialex, I love the sound of a micro UUK but with the Spydie touch!

Yeah, I posted a quick description on Spyderco forum. Basically a Bastard File, some patience and an edge reprofile. Slow not to burn the temper, and makes that perfect edge easier to attain. Thanks for the compliments.

Maybe, but even I was impressed with the outcome. I was just fooling around until I notices all the lines "worked" and the knife became WAY better than the original.
