Spot revisited

Okay, time to be a pest again. So, what's the scoop on the project? Any news yet? I'm freakin' out with anticipation to hear even the slightest tidbit of info! ;)

I wasn't a fan of my SPOT but even with the current length handle (IMO a little long for discreet--yes, that's the proper word form--carry), I'd buy it either with a leaf or Wharncliffe blade, with much preference to the latter. I'd stick to VG-10 or better rather than AUS-6.

One thing I forgot--I'd ditch the Micarta treatment as it's a little abrasive against skin (mine, anyway). Those who need more traction can figure something out on their own.

I just got back from the European shows. I'm still traveling quite a bit through June, but I'm in and out.

I'm holding the final plastic ergo model as I type. It's a 2.25" (58mm) warncliff blade. We'll cut the first test pieces some time next week. Heat treat, grinding, etc. should take a couple of weeks. Scott will make a few "slip sheaths", another week. Figure a month to get them out.

I spoke with Fred Perrin about it last week and he thinks it could be a nice piece.

Thanks a ton, Sal! I must apologize for my impatience, but this project has not left my brain since square-one. I cannot wait to see what you have developed! Patience is a virtue which I sometimes forget.

Personally, I'm glad the handle size has remained the same. That was the best part of the original SPOT; it was comfortable to hold in forward or reverse grip, and just fit my hand very well. The excitement grows.

I agree with you JD, I think your sheath idea adds to the versatility of the design. The slots give you countless options. As for the blade, Warncliff is a great idea Sal. The main resaon I never liked the knife was the blade shape, too fragile of tip for the purpose of the design. Will be waiting for this one to come out!

Will continue to wait anxiously. Awesome news that a REAL version of it, albeit plastic, is reality.

Keep up the great work Sal.

DAFOX, thanks a ton for the nod to my sheath idea. I too believe it offers the most options. This knife is gonna' be a doozy, and if it doesn't catch on with the knife buying public, I'll be very surprised.

Yesterday i was lucky enough to be able to acquire the "upgraded" Spot at my local dealer, the one with VG-10 and micarta scales. This was my second Spot as i recently got a black one in AUS-6. Never before had i ever had two of the "same" knives, so you need to know that i REALLY like these knives.

It's a pity they got cut from the line, but i'll look forwrad to the next generation Spots.

Okay, Sal, here I go again; any update on the new SPOT project? Throw the starving masses a morsel. :D Yeah, I know I'm a pest, but I can't wait to put the prototype through the paces!

Hi J Davey.

Actually, I've got one in my hand as I type. S30V. We're cutting a few more this week. If you can do without a sheath we should be able to send out the two test pieces about the 1st of May.

*gasp*!

In S30V! I think one of these would be nice for work :)

S30V?! Spectacular. Yes, I can do without a sheath (I can rig up some form of carry myself). Sal, what do YOU think of the new version so far?

I think it's a functional design. I think it would be more effective as a belt sheath than a neck sheath. Maybe a sheath for a vest would also be practical.

I thought I already contributed....

well here is my suggestion for blade shapes:

yojimbo style wharncliffe for utility
hawkbill for SD

just my 2(euro)cents

I think the success of this new spot is going to be based more on the sheath than on anything else.

It needs to be something simple and it needs to not be bad like most factory sheaths seem to be.

I'm thinking a compact kydex design with a sturdy clip system to attach to a belt or have in a pocket.

I think it needs to look good and not be overly bulky. If the sheath is a home run I think the model will really take off.
