If you look at that person's post history, you'll see that he has contributed nothing to BFC...no opinions, no questions, no answers, no pictures of what he carries, likes, wants, etc. His sole purpose here since the day he joined has been to sell a few knives. That's allowed, but I'll not ever deal with him.

As far as the dealer, I noticed a dealer selling Sirens significantly above MAP. As a result, they are in stock there despite being sold out elsewhere. They won't be getting my business though.

Yeah not good practice to jump on here and jack up the price that much :(

Retail price is retail price. Spyderco allows dealers to discount their products, and most do that.

To me, suggesting that a dealer that offers a product at the manufacturers suggested retail price is somehow gouging doesn’t make sense to me.

I also do not subscribe the the “gouging” world view. I think people and dealers should be free to ask whatever they want for a product or service, and the market will decide what something is worth.

I have no problem with flippers, gougers, retailers, wholesalers, jobbers, auctioneers, horse traders, marker-uppers, or rock bottom discounters.

So you define price gouging as selling a Spyderco 43% or more above MAP? (MAP + @43% MAP = retail)
There’s nothing ethically wrong with selling at MSRP, it’s just not competitive with other sellers. Personally, I won’t buy from a dealer who is selling for more than the competitive market price, which for Spyderco is usually MAP.

If it's legal, and not violating the rules, it's pretty simple. Vote with your wallet. What's worth the price to one person may not be worth it to another.

Our attempt to ferret out the abusers is like running in place on a hamster wheel...getting us nowhere fast. (Hopefully neither ferrets nor hamsters were offended by being used as illustrations in this example.)

Report perceived abuses and we will continue to try and take corrective action where it is warranted.

I am not sure what you mean by the "gouging world view". People can certainly do what they want, but so can I. I simply choose to deal with certain folks and not with others. I was just trying to ferret out if you had a hard and fast rule about what constitutes "gouging". I'm sure there is a better place for such a discussion than this thread though.

Agreed.

That's MSRP. Very few If any dealers sell at MSRP. The retail price I was talking about is MAP price.

MAP is “minimum advertised price” which is set by a manufacturer.
That is the lowest price a retailer is allowed to advertise an item for sale.

In a competitive market the MAP becomes the prevailing charge but we're lucky that in order to inspire loyalty from customers they stick with MAP even on knives that sell out in minutes. MSRP would be justified due to demand but I'm sure the loyalty factor plays a bigger role in sustained profitability.

With “regular catalog” items like the Siren, does Spyderco run them regularly every few months or once they are sold out it will be a year before more are made?
