Spyderco 2020 Lists: Delivered & Upcoming

Regarding the possibility of a Spyderco custom Shop. These will probably be limited to Golden models? Price will be an important factor (closer to MAP or MSRP?) as well as which blade steels and handle materials. Someone may be able to order something similar to a Sprint Run and/or Dealer Exclusive.

It’s a good thing we’ll be able to order all the previous sprint runs we missed out on right?

For any of my fellow Canadian's, the Para 3 SPY27 has started to show up at Canadian dealers. Already grabbed one for myself, can't wait to check it out.
Shaman Rex45 also showing up at one dealer so far.

Probably not as I doubt if all steels will be available through the Custom Shop.

Right. And this is also a good reminder that if you break a blade on a sprint that has an unusual steel, there may be a time when a replacement blade cannot be provided. Sal, please correct me if this is incorrect.

Spyderco does not replace blades even for a fee. As far as I know, only Benchmade, Kershaw and Zero Tolerance do for a fee and then only when they have the blade in stock.

Seems like a service that should be offered. If people are willing to pay a reasonable price, then why not? You are correct that Benchmade and ZT do it, and it's nice when you want to replace a worn out blade. BTW, what is your relation to Spyderco?

I have no relationship with any knife maker/manufacturer other than purchasing knives as a consumer/collector.

Okay. I had thought that you were their official new product announcer because you consistently talk about new releases (which is great). When I talked about unmentioned sprints I just got several people suggesting that I was wrong (which I wasn't) and so I have just kept the announced sprints under wraps. No biggie. Just trying to understand what it is and isn't okay to discuss.

I think Spyderco is a company that’s very into lean manufacturing. One of the primary objectives of lean manufacturing is to not keep extra stock laying around. So that may be one reason.

Another is that they do cqi’s and would have to keep all of the blades for all previous models throughout the design history. Wouldn’t be worthwhile for them in my opinion. I doubt they would keep the work holding for old designs in the shop either, so I don’t think they could easily make more.

Finally, they make knives in several different locations, so keeping stocks of all of them would be more difficult.

I can't argue with you. Without a better (or any) understanding of their financials and operations I can't really say one way or another. I'm sure that they have a reason. Blade replacement is a nice convenience, and it seems like it should be doable on vanilla items like VG-10 Delicas etc. Then again, may lead to a lot of confusion if only certain blades were available.

Hi Osantana, Vercro,

Welcome to our forum.

Hi Eljay2,

As mentioned, due to the number of new models (40+ per year) and constant refinement, and mu;tiple manufacturing locations., blade replacement is very challenging. We're talking about hundreds of possibilities. Companies that don't change their models much can do this more easily.

Thank you, Sal. Makes perfect sense. It does make me a little extra cautious about using some of them, but it is what it is. I don't abuse knives, but still worry about certain ones (e.g. s110v) because I've heard countless stories about chipping and breaking even from your own folks at Spyderco. In any case, I'll take the variety over blade replacement. Keep up the great work!

One other point I'd like to mention. I recently commented on the Benchmade forum about how they have gotten very loose about calling knives "limited" and not numbering them. Lots of games. I have great respect how you have created so many cool Sprints, and how you have not repeatedly made batches of knives that people run to faster than beanie babies. IMHO, you build a lot of loyalists by keeping sprints uncommon. I realize that you know this, but have been surprised by what I have seen at Benchmade, and I attribute it to some fairly amateur marketing. No response needed or expected.

Has anyone heard any news or updates on when the Para 3 Diamond Arc Forest Green G10 S45N will be released?

Considering it's from the previous reveal with the Rex Sprints, I'd say anytime through the next couple of weeks! The Rex 45 Manix 2 LW and Native Chief are due also.

It's best to announce a new product or the product going to dealers when you have some certainty about it from reliable sources. Best to be the an accurate source not necessarily first.
